    Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide

Everyone sees a woman who has it together. What they don’t see is everything she’s holding in her head, running the house, the money, supporting everyone around her, with no instruction manual for any of it.
The Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide is for the woman who’s mistaken exhaustion for competence long enough to know busy isn’t the same as steady.
Each episode highlights experts in honest conversations about what actually runs a life: health, home, money, relationships, identity. The goal isn’t one more thing to manage. It’s trading the white-knuckling for a little more ease.
    Come find your people.

What Do Your Kids Know About You? May 06, 2020
    Show notes

As we approach mothers day 2020, I wanted to take the opportunity to talk with three of the most important humans in my life — my sons.

As a family, we’ve been through a lot over the years… health issue, special needs, adoption challenges are just a few. I don’t want to dive too far into any of it out of respect for their privacy. Also, I call each of my kids by their first initial, per the request of one of my kiddos.

Speaking of privacy, I asked the ladies in the Forty Thrive community if they could ask their kids one question — that they’re actually afraid to learn the answer to — what question would it be? From sex to drugs to parenting mistakes… the community certainly has some questions.

No matter what you ask your teens, grown adult kids or littles, this time together could be a perfect opportunity to connect. Grab a phone or recording device and ask them questions. Tell them about you… see how you’re alike and different. Whatever happens here on out, we’ll never get this time back. What a gift it could be to you, your kids and future generations to learn more about you and who you were in this ever changing world.

The Coping Technique that Will Change Your Life Apr 22, 2020
Show notes Sometimes there are moments in life that feel like they were created by an act of divine intervention. This is one of them. I read this blog post by Dr Rachel Barbanel-Fried (AKA Dr. RBF) entitled Things That Bend Won't Break. It really spoke to me at a time I needed it. So I invited her onto the podcast. Little did I know, it would become the mantra for getting through the next several weeks for all of us. If there is one episode you may need right now, it's this one. Right here. For you. About the guest: Dr. Rachel Barbanel-Fried, aka Dr. RBF, is a clinical psychologist, writer, and optimal performance consultant based in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. She consults with executives and organizations looking to elevate performance and reach new levels of success in the workplace and beyond. She also sees individuals, couples, and families in a therapeutic setting who are looking to move forward towards growth, change, and healing. Dr. RBF utilizes an evidence-based, collaborative approach. She’s direct, down-to-earth, and non-judgmental, specializing in working with people from diverse backgrounds. She is also a consultant with the Flow Research Collective, a peak performance research and training organization. Some of my favorite quotables from this episode: "The best exercise is whatever you like." “Take the moment of suck and come up with other options.” "People are not broken, we may feel broken." "We all think that whatever happening in our heads is true." "The feeling itself is just a feeling but then we get caught up in our judgement of feelings, that’s when we get stuck." Sibling Revelry Apr 02, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to this special episode of Forty Thrive. What makes it so special? Well I’m glad you asked.

First of all, April 2, 2020 is my 49th birthday. That’s right, it’s my last year in my 40s. To celebrate, I invited five incredible women on to the podcast for this episode. These women are resilient…they’re smart… they take no BS… and they are like sisters to me.

Actually they’re more than like sisters to me, they are my sisters.

To give you some context to the conversation you’re about to hear...

    • The six of us also have 7 brothers — so yeah, there are 13 of us in total.
    • There were 11 kids originally when my mom died from breast cancer at the age of 39. She’s the mother of the first 5 sisters you’ll hear from today, I was the baby. Two of us — including myself — carry the genetic mutation that led to our mother’s cancer.
    • My dad remarried a little while later and they had two more kids. That’s where girl #6 comes in.

    Are you following?

So you’ll hear from six women ranging from 42-64; kickass women who work hard, crack inappropriate jokes and who have experienced a whole lot of life between us.

    Here’s a little cheat sheet.

    — Two of my sisters are now sober

    — One of them stayed sober even after experiencing the tragic and sudden loss of her 30 year old daughter in a car crash

    — One of my sisters is currently fighting glioblastoma, an incurable brain cancer that she’s been battling for over two and a half years.

    — Our father died four years ago from Alzheimers. This was after suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes for decades. He was the strongest, biggest personality we’ve ever known and I’m willing to say, the most influential human being in all of our lives.

–– We were raised in the suburbs of Boston. They all live in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I live 3000 miles away in California.

–– We recorded this with a studio audience — okay, not really… but we did have some family members sitting nearby and heckling at times.

Dying for Sex with Nikki Boyer Mar 19, 2020
Show notes When I discover a woman’s voice — especially over 40 — who has found an impactful, creative way to share her story through the power of podcasting, I can’t help but yell it from the rooftops. Now more than ever, elevating each other’s voices is hugely important. I met Nikki Boyer probably 7 or 8 years ago when she was involved with a TV show I was working on. Nikki’s an Emmy Award winning TV host, actress, voice over artist…and life coach. You may recognize her from Wendy Williams show, Access Hollywood, countless TV shows or on Straight Talk with Ross, the podcast she co-hosts. But it’s her new 6-episode podcast series, Dying for Sex that we’re going to dive into today.

Can Your Burden Become Your Purpose? Mar 12, 2020
Show notes Angela Chee’s mission is to help people break through their barriers, step into the spotlight and live their legacy. Now she’s highlighting those people in her brand new — and soon to be wildly successful — podcast the Power of the Only. We talk the evolution of women, how fear presents itself when we’re over 40 (vs when we were younger) and getting comfortable with our own voice, in whatever life’s season we find ourselves in. If you’ve ever felt like “the only” — the only woman, the only person of color, the only anything… in your work, community or family… I think this episode — and Angela’s message — will resonate deeply. Speaking of resonating deeply… a few days back I shared three key ways to support Forty Thrive and help me to build a team of women over 40 in creating more resources for YOU. The response did not disappoint! Want to learn more? Visit the Forty Thrive Patreon page! Huge thanks to our "Three-vers" Barbara, Pam, Julie, Courtney, Lisa, Karly, Andrea, Delisa Our new book club members!
