Dogged Determination: 85% Spinal Fusion Can't Stop Heather Laptalo From Running Aug 17, 2018
    Show notes

Heather Laptalo has four rods in her back that currently fuse 85% of her spine and is classified as 20% disabled. She is missing 40% of her lung capacity. Despite doctors telling her that her athlete days are over, she has hiked Everest Base Camp, ran multiple marathons including Boston, and went to university on a full ride cross-country running scholarship. Can't is not in her vocabulary.

By the time Heather was 10 years old, she was forced to sleep in a heavy metal brace. It was a cage she couldn't escape without the help of her parents. During the day, she ran free as a "normal" little girl. By by the age of 13, the surgeries started because her spine was growing crooked. Alienated from her friends for being different, she trudged on through high school with the dream of becoming a professional soccer player. By her senior year, she had another series of surgeries. This time became too much to bear. The doctors told her she could never run or play soccer again.

Drowning in a sea of depression and self-pity wasn't on Heather's agenda, so she started walking. Then running. Then running...fast. Her mantra of "You got this" has pushed her to beat all odds. Now her doctors say she is a miracle. Heather just says, "I'm not a miracle... whatever you believe you are or what you want to be, you can do it. It doesn't matter what physical limitations you think you may have."

How to Stick to Your Goals and Stay Motivated with Bryan Falchuk Aug 03, 2018
    Show notes

In order to transform, we have to figure out who we really are and what we want. It's not always easy to figure that out. Sometimes we have to know what questions to ask ourselves and understand the reason behind our intentions. For Bryan Falchuk, the fog lifted when his wife nearly died. Battling with obesity and anxiety for the first part of his life, Bryan struggled to show up every day as the person he wanted to be. After his wife's brush with death, he was reunited with his purpose. From that moment, a metamorphosis took place with finally losing weight and keeping it off and also taking a new direction in his life. One of his life goals is to teach people how to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Bryan is an executive coach, public speaker, C-level executive and best-selling author of Do a Day, in which he outlines his approach to create change. Using Do A Day, Bryan was able to break from this pattern to live a life of consistent, unending health and wellness, and works to share what he’s learned with others seeking a happier, more complete existence. His approach is easy to understand and implement.

Bryan’s work has appeared in many major publications like the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Inc. Magazine and more, and he has been featured as a guest on over 100 podcasts and radio shows. He has also shared his message across many stages, including multiple TEDx events.

How Mental Fatigue Affects Athletic Performance with Dr. Walter Staiano Jul 26, 2018
    Show notes

I'm really excited about today's guest, Dr. Water Staiano. After reading Alex Hutchinson's book Endure and doing a little bit of my own research about mental fatigue and performance, I needed to know more. Personally, this year I have been struggling with fatigue despite one of my lowest training loads. I learned it was due to the mental fatigue of all the other inputs and projects I take on. Rest also means resting your brain. But what actually constitutes resting your body AND your mind? How do you know if your fatigue is from the body or from the mind? Dr. Staiano and I got to the bottom of a lot of my questions. The most exciting part is that the research in mental fatigue is still pretty young and in the next several years, there will be a lot of great tools we can use!

Dr. Staiano has spent nearly 20 years in sport science and performance. Working in many research labs around the globe, he has worked closely and created long-lasting collaborations with several sport institutions. Dr. Walter has supported and advised a number of coaches, military personnel and elite athletes preparing for world championship events and the Olympic Games.

Dr. Staiano's research in the last few years has been highly ranked for its innovative elements and multidisciplinary approach as well as for its strong impact on elite sport performance. His passion is integrating evidence-based and experience-based domains, and it has been a successful formula. With the sole purpose to help athletes go beyond their limits and capabilities, he has been wearing many “hats”: physiologist, psychologist, neuroscientist, and coach and sport consultant providing an almost unlimited perspective.

    Topics Discussed in the Podcast

    • What is mental fatigue
    • Biomarkers of fatigue/how to know if you are tired
    • How do you train your brain?
    • Does brain training affect athletic performance
    • Mindfulness protocols for brain training and mental endurance

Another Best Day Ever with Leadville Mountain Bike Champ Larissa Connors Jul 20, 2018
    Show notes

Larissa Connors might be the most stoked and energetic person you've ever seen. Every photo I see of Larissa has her rocking her infectious grin. Seriously, google her and look at the images! What puts that cheshire cat grin on her face? Mountain biking.

Larissa is an ultra endurance mountain bike racer for Sho-Air cycling group and Felt bicycles. Larissa is rad- she has won every 100 miler she has ever raced including the Leadville 100. On top off her stellar fitness, she is a full time high school Algebra teacher who gets an insane amount of riding in each month from an awesome bike commute and coaches the Laguna Beach Interscholastic mtb team. She is addicted to pushing herself to ride further, higher and harder every minute of every day (much to her CTS coach's dismay). She is racing 5 100 mile mountain bike races in a row (yeah, ever week!) In addition to winning, Larissa's main goals in cycling are to make every day the best day possible, to inspire stoke, and to spread the gospel of mountain biking far and wide. If just one person finds the joy of sailing down a trail, over rocks and roots, in the woods on a Felt Edict, then her career will be deemed a success!

"What matters is that I focus on lifting others up, having a great time riding bikes, and spreading stoke." - Larissa Connors

    Topics Discussed in the Podcast

    • Larissa' background and her transition to endurance racing
    • What Larissa loves about being a teacher
    • How she deals with disappointment
    • What her #anotherbestday means to her
    • How she stays motivated

    Show notes

How much sleep do we actually need? What is the best way to fall asleep? How do you deal with jet lag? Today's jam-packed episode is about everything sleep related. I had the luxury of talking to a sleep expert, Dr. Amy Bender.

Her current research focuses on the relationship of sleep and recovery on athletic performance. She has developed sleep intervention protocols for numerous Canadian National Teams. Her research interests stem from being an athlete herself; she is a Hall of Fame basketball player, has summited a handful of volcanoes, completed an Ironman in 2009, and currently runs around chasing her 3 children who are all 5 and under.

Social Consciousness with Entrepreneur and Vegan Margaux Khoury Jun 30, 2018
    Show notes

Margaux Khoury is the founder and CEO of one of the most popular organic, natural, cruelty-free deodorants, “The Best Deodorant In The World”, a company she started out of her kitchen. After getting to know Margaux and her company, I learned that its mission isn't just to keep you from being stinky! There's so much more to her business. First, making an environmental impact through using responsible ingredients (they don't even use plastic with their packaging) is important. Second, they donate to water.org. For each jar of deodorant sold, it provides 1 year of clean drinking water for a child. I learned that 4,000 kids die every DAY from lack of water. And third, on the first day of every month they donate 100% of sales to their Animal Advocacy Partners.

We talked about a number of topics including how and why she started focusing on her health and the environment, places she has lived around the world, what "unschooling" her children means, how she balances the hustle of being a CEO and having 3 kids, and the importance of conscious capitalism.

    Topics Discussed in the Podcast

    • Margaux's world travels
    • working with your spouse in your business
    • how to stay true to your mission when money is involved
    • Margaux's path to better health

Collaboration Over Competition: Redefining Feminine with Cat Canada of Ladies Aloud Jun 22, 2018
    Show notes

"When she shifted from competition to collaboration, all the women around her became radiant stars in a dark blue sky, each one striking and rising, without trying to outshine."

"The She Book" - Tanya Markul

We have all felt it - that heavy feeling of jealousy and envy; that feeling that you aren't enough compared to someone else. Comparison is something that we can't help feel as human beings, but it also can make us feel like we are not enough. What if instead of feeling threatened by someone else's looks or success, you could actually help each other be better?

There's actually a book I've been reading called "Big Potential" by one of my favorite authors, Shawn Achor. It's about how our success is amplified by the success of those around us making it imperative to be aware of who we are spending our time with.

Collaboration over competition is something I think about a lot. Even in my races as a competitive athlete, my competitors actually make me better. It's all how you choose to look at it. I stumbled across an amazing woman on the internet named Cat Canada who has a website called Ladies Aloud. I loved it because it was about empowering other women. If you aren't a woman, you'll still get a lot out of this episode. Cat wanted to create an environment where women could support one another and help each other in meaningful ways. It sets the tone for every other interaction. On Ladies Aloud, there are inspiring stories, articles on conscious living, and a hub to find events.

I love this podcast guest because we talked about what it means to be feminine in this day and age and how we can be more supportive of one another instead of threatened. I think this conversation is interesting because Cat played soccer at a very high level for most of her life on a team of women and that dynamic seems to have inspired her along this path.

I love this quote from Cat "The well of success is endlessly abundant; one woman’s success does not threaten your own!" She says, "amplifying other women is at the heart of everything we do."

As a side note, what can you do to help amplify people in your life?

Power, friendship, and connection are built upon vulnerability. So let's get into this juicy episode with Cat Canada

    Topics Discussed in the Podcast

    • how and why Cat started Ladies Aloud
    • defining a new wave of feminism
    • why it's okay to not have answers
    • Cat's experience as a female athlete
    • when is competition healthy and how to be happy for your competitors
    • discussion around body image

Surviving Cancer & Losing 130 pounds; Life Altering Stories of a Vegan Couple Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

The decisions that we make can alter the trajectory of our lives... and even our survival. Dan and Sheanne Moskaluk had a first hand account of the life altering changes that occur when you eat a plant-based diet. Sheanne was 300 pounds and only discovered elmiinating all animal products by accident. Her son wanted to get into body building and the clerk at the health foods store encouraged Sheanne to do more research into the Whey Protein she was about to give to her teenage son. With an inquisitive mine and voracious appetite for reading and information, Sheanne learned about the negative health, environment, and animal cruelty consequences of eating dairy that stemmed to all animal products. After losing 130 pounds, her relationship with Dan changed as well as how she viewed herself and what was possible. Their family ate more plant-based meals and everyone felt and looked healthier.

Life was better and cruising along a positive trajectory when the unthinkable happened.

One morning in 203, Dan woke up with abdomen pain and wrote it off as a kidney stone. After a doctor visit, life stood still. He had stage IV renal cancer with a 95% chance of death. He was terminal with very little chance of survival and couldn't even be treated with radiation or chemotherapy. The tumor had been growing for what was estimated at 15-20 years. As a hail mary, he tried a very invasive and fatiguing immunotherapy treatment. Instead of treating the problem, it attacked his liver and nearly killed him.

Adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet nursed him back to health. It's been 5 years since his diagnosis and he is healthier than ever.

I can't wait for you to hear this story from these amazing people. They have also been featured in the documentary, Eating You Alive. My husband, Matt joined us for this in-person recording. I hope you enjoy this riveting exchange and feel inspired to eat more plants after listening to it!

    Topics Discussed in the Podcast

    • Sheanne's journey losing 130 pounds
    • danger of normalizing obesity
    • Dan's experience being diagnosed with cancer
