Was It An Act Of Kindness Or Class Solidarity?

On this episode, we discuss the recent controversy surrounding Ellen Degeneres attending a Dallas Cowboys game with former President, George W. Bush. After a photo of them and their spouses went viral on Twitter, Ellen addressed the widespread criticism in a 4-minute speech on her talk show. However, it was more misdirection than anything else. Ellen casually dismissed the gravity of the issue by saying "I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have" & "When I say, 'be kind to one another,' I don't only mean the people that think the same way that you do." With just those two sentences, it is painfully obvious that Ellen is out of touch & has used her wealth & class to attain the privilege to agree to disagree.

On this episode, we tackle the FCC's nebulous stance on what is too obscene for network television. Following our discussion about Hallow Eve's floorshow look from episode 5 of Dragula season 3, many of our listeners reached out to remind us that the FCC prohibits the use or simulation of menstrual blood in television programs, commercials, or print ads. With that in mind, we did some research into the matter and decided to share our findings. It was no surprise to us that the "regulation" is outdated, leads to misinformation, and is rooted in misogyny.

Seasonal Affective Disorder and our continued adventures with hair bleaching are on the agenda as well, and we share what we're most excited about this week: Cabronas y Chingonas' "2 Fat 2 Brave" with Favy Fav & Eva Arreguin; Safiya Nygaard's YouTube Channel; and Ta-Osh Designs' inclusive range of nude fabrics.

In our review, we discuss what we liked the most & least, as well as the importance of the show's use of a diverse cast of Q.U.I.LT.B.A.N.G. actors. On this episode, we bring you our review of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's latest Costume Institute exhibition, "Camp: Notes on Fashion." Drawing inspiration from Susan Sontag's seminal 1964 essay, "Notes on Camp," the exhibition explored the ways in which designers have employed camp sensibility in the creation of their haute couture garments & accessories. While it is the first Costume Institute exhibition to explicitly center homosexuality in the presentation of the works, it is a dated conservation that generally excludes the contributions of Queer POCs. Our discussion of the exhibition focuses on this erasure, our favorite pieces, and a lesson in etiquette for museum visitors.

Each year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute throws a grand affair to celebrate the opening of its Spring exhibition & raise money for the department. Held to inaugurate the exhibition, "Camp: Notes on Fashion," the 2019 Met Gala dress code was "Studied Triviality" challenging attendees to compete for the spotlight in the campiest creations ever seen on the steps of the Met.

After a very Very VERY short off-season, RuPaul's Drag Race Season 11 premiered this past week. On what was one of the most action-packed premieres to date, we were introduced to 14 new queens and re-acquainted ourselves with Season 10 viral sensation, Miss Vanjie!

During the premiere, the Queens had to hold their own in photos with past Drag Race contestants; Miley Cyrus was sent undercover into the Werk Room; and Silky Nutmeg Ganache gave us reality show gold as she vied for the attention of every camera. For the first runway, the Girls had to create looks based on the contents of steamer trunks "belonging" to Queens from previous seasons.

The runway theme this week was "LaLaPaRuza Eleganza." As nebulous as Ru's mile-high coifs, the theme was open to interpretion...WIDE OPEN. The looks were a mixed bag of pure genius and mediocrity, with some girls pulling out all the stops and others pulling from the back of their closets.

On Episode 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 4, the top 6 Queens have to deliver the rulogy at the funeral roast of the legendary Lady Bunny. With the number of contestants quickly dwindling, this main challenge was a make it or break it moment. Three of the girls nailed the roast, while the others were barely warmed up.

The runway theme this week was "Angelic White." The Queens floated down the runway in feathers, rhinestones, and yards upon yards of billowing fabric. For their looks, they drew inspiration from Grecian goddesses, catholic imagery, and Prince!

On Episode 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 4, the Queens embrace their inner Jersey girls and whip out the leopard print as they enter Judge Michele Visage's courtroom on "Jersey Justice." While most of the Queens turned it out and made us laugh, one barely elicited a chuckle.

The runway theme this week was "Swerves and Curves: Padded for the Gawds." With a theme as open to interpretation as this, there were extreme silhouettes, deconstructed couture, and pop culture references on the runway. Not all the girls' looks may have been obvious, but Monique Heart & Manila Luzon won the race as they swerved into first place with their dangerous curves!

2019 promises to be an exciting year, with some of our favorites returning and new projects premiering. We are awaiting Season 2 of "Pose" with baited breath, and can hardly wait for Valentina's turn as Angel in "Rent LIVE" on FOX.

We also talk about our own personal triumphs in 2018 and the progress we hope to make in 2019.

A Boston resident since 2014, she lives in a 6-bedroom home that serves as the ultimate drag studio. It is here that she has whipped up headdresses made of twigs, a Mother Earth ensemble (complete with a moss merkin), and many other fantastical creations. Violencia first caught our attention with a performance at Sasha Velour's Nightgowns, where she was perched atop a ladder with Neon Calypso hidden beneath her flowing robes.

Violencia joined us from Boston to talk about her career, drag inspirations, family, and her penchant for incorporating hot dogs & dairy into her performance roster!

After graduating, Sham moved back to Boston and has been a fixture in the local scene for over five years. Their signature colored facial hair, and bold geometric patterns are defining characteristics of their aesthetic, which Sham uses in a chameleon-like manner. Googly eyes, flowers, gloves, and a talent for craft are but a few of the tools in their eclectic arsenal of drag. Jupiter Velvet stole a spaceship & crash-landed on Earth, seeking to be an "average" American girl. However, she is anything but average. Jupiter is a complex and multi-layered character and performer, drawing her inspiration from Patrick Nagel, the Memphis Design Group and, of course, Lizzie McGuire!

Jupiter is also a fierce advocate for body positivity and trans-acceptance. A member of the Queer Scene in Miami's Wynwood District, Jupiter uses her visibility to break down pre-conceived notions of what drag should look like & confronts those who believe that "passable" is the ultimate compliment for a trans woman.

Jupiter chatted with us as she was putting the finishing touches on her look for Bushwig 2018. We discussed gender identity; her experiences growing up queer and Latinx; and the Indiegogo campaign for the documentary, "Emergence," which explores gender and drag through the profiles of six of Miami's queer performers.

"We're The Backyard Queens Honey!"

On this episode, we interview Glam Punk Tejana Drag Queen & Bushwig Co-Founder, Horrorchata. Chata's story is a winding road that began in San Antonio. As a child, her father would dress her up as a clown to assist him at his gigs, blowing up balloons & standing in for him when he wasn't available. Her mother, a wedding planner, contributed to her highly organized nature. Eventually, she moved to Austin, where she began to experiment with drag. After moving back home for a bit, she eventually boarded a one-way flight to New York City & the rest is history!

Over the years, Chata has established herself as an international Drag Queen & DJ. In 2012, along with Baabes Trust, she co-founded Bushwig. Now in its seventh year, Bushwig has evolved beyond Chata & Baabes' wildest dreams. The drag festival has traveled around the United States, had it's first stint in Berlin this summer, and might just make it to Mexico City in 2019. What began as an idea while wig shopping, has transformed into a cultural phenomenon, solidifying Chata's legacy as a leader & legend in our community!

On this episode, we interview Miami's Party Queen, Miss Toto. A towering drag goddess, she is a staple of the Wynwood District's alternative drag scene. She moved to Miami to pursue a graduate degree in Marine-Science Research. Little did she know that she would also be studying the art of drag. As with many, the bug bit hard, and under the tutelage of her drag mothers Juleisy Y Karla, Miss Toto was born. Since then, Miss Toto has been painting her face, donning heels, and serving Miami everything a 6' 5" muscle queen has to offer!

Miss Toto chats with us about doing drag at night, tagging sharks by day, body building, and her upcoming appearance at Bushwig 2018. She also shared how she keeps herself in tip-top shape while pursuing all her passions. Miss Toto may be a Party Monster, but self-care is the top priority for this Queen!

The show was created by the co-owners of Hamburger Mary's International, Apple Brown Betty & Cherry Pi (a.k.a. the Sugarbaker Twins.) Each week, the Sugarbakers and Camp Counselor, Dear Ruthie, test the girls' outdoors know-how in the search for the first "Queen Of Camp!"

Alexis shares her experiences of going to Camp in full drag, working in a mess hall, being encouraged to wear sneakers, and how she almost fell into a lake. We also swap our most memorable camping stories!

Family Reunion or Witch Hunt?

With only a week left before the crowing of a new "America's Next Drag Superstar," all 14 Queens from RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 returned for an emotional reunion.

To describe the reunion as rocky would be an understatement. Wounds were still fresh, the hurt was real, and tensions were high. GuRuPaul took center stage as a self-righteous, holier-than-thou, unqualified life coach. Her actions exacerbated the conflict between The Vixen & Eureka O'Hara and bringing Asia O'Hara to tears. Barely 20 minutes in, The Vixen leaves the stage, having become the target of a savage witch hunt at the hands of "Mama Ru," a role she continuously falls short of fulfilling.

The complete disregard for the mental health & well-being of the contestants this season has been a hard pill to swallow. In the words of Jasmine Masters, "RuPaul's Drag Race done fucked up drag..."

On Episode 11 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10, only 5 Queens remain.

For this “Resting Brunch Face” mini-challenge, the Top 5 put pancakes in edible drag and served them to Cheyenne Jackson. Asia’s “Panquisha” won her Cheyenne’s heart and a spa day on Rodeo Drive.

The maxi-challenge & runway forced the Queens to tap into their Inner Saboteurs. Each girl created two looks/characters inspired by their best and worst qualities. What could possibly go wrong when confronting your inner demons while sleep deprived?

The split personalities in the Werk room & runway let us in on the Queens’ inner monologues and deepest insecurities. Aquaria/Sabatina stole the show with a solid narrative and flawless style. However, Miz Cracker/Miz Crumbs didn't make the cut and we said goodbye to another New York Queen.

On Episode 10 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10, 6 Queens still remain after last week's double save.

This week, the mini-challenge has the girls modeling for RuPaul's newest fragrance, "Trade." Eureka slayed the competition with her flawless John Candy illusion & gets to pick the queens' maxi-challenge partners.

For the maxi-challenge & runway, the Top 6 drag up Social Media Influencers & stomp the runway as a family. Somehow, Cynthia Lee Fontaine snuck back into the competition, masquerading as Frankie Grande!

This episode had us in stitches & left us in tears. RuPaul was in rare form, Miz Cracker FINALLY won a maxi-challenge/runway, and Monét X. Change's elimination was heartbreaking.

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Ep. 9 May 21, 2018

Make It A Double!

On Episode 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10, only 6 Queens remain.

This week, the "Pants Down Bottoms Up" mini-challenge recalled challenges from past seasons. The queens had to rely on their memory to match up Rounderbum (a.k.a. Lumpybum) underwear designs worn by the Pit Crew. It also marked the first time a trans man - Laith Ashley - was a member of the Pit Crew.

The maxi-challenge had the girls perform in "Breastworld," a parody of HBO's hit series, "Westworld." It was very "Fantasy Island" meets "The Jetsons" meets lackluster writing & confusing directing. However, the Queens did what they could with the material provided.

The Silver Foxy runway theme had the Queens gave us a glimpse of where they would be 50 years from now. Some withstood the ravages of aging, while others were selling fanny packs in the DragCon parking lot.

Aja Is In Her Feelings May 10, 2018

Aja is back on Grizzly KiKi. Since we last checked in, Aja has been on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 & RuPaul’s Drag All Stars Season 3; sent countless internet trolls back under their bridges; & traveled the world entertaining thousands of fans!

On the eve of RuPaul’s DragCon L.A. 2018, Aja delves into the intense racism & bigotry within the Drag Race fandom. As a Queen of color & a public figure, it is something she has had to deal with head-on. Tackling these experiences in both real & virtual spaces has been no easy feat, as they have become increasingly more common & brazen. What the trolls don’t understand is that Aja is a force to be reckoned with & she’s going to get them together, one way or another.

We are also celebrating the release of “Brujería.” It is the second single off of Aja’s upcoming debut EP, “In My Feelings,” to be released on May 11. The single dispels misconceptions surrounding Santería - Aja’s religious practice - while simultaneously celebrating historical & fictional Brujas. The track’s visually stunning music video completes the enchantment & explores the multiple facets of Aja’s complex persona.

Having seen Aja’s evolution over many years has been a privilege. She is a true New York Queen whose reach has grown beyond the five boroughs. She is using her art as a call to action. Queer people of color are essential, important, & must be celebrated!
