We’ve been reading articles about the impending doom caused by the lack of automotive technicians, and in our research might have found the dumbest statement ever made by someone on the topic. One article stated that, “some service managers are penalizing fast working technicians by not letting them move onto another job until the book time on their previous repair has elapsed.” Have you ever heard of such a thing? That is a serious question actually, have you ever heard of a shop that won't let a technician work on another car until the book time on one they’re working on presently has elapsed? That would literally be defeating the point of flat rate and we cant see how any shop that operated in such a way could possibly stay open. At the end of the day experts need to address the real reasons why people are leaving this industry, or they are completely failing in doing their jobs. Also Uncle Jimmy references some college majors that shouldn’t exist but actually do. This episode was made possible by our listeners, the members of the Grease the Wheels Nation. It was also made possible by donations over at patreon.com/greasethewheels! We have plans and perks over there for everyone, from the new lot kid at $1/month for basic access to some of our exclusive content and our discord server, to our Master Tech program that gets you all sorts of awesome perks with some of our sponsors and killer swag. If you’re good at something never do it for free, right? So why do people think that they can get their car fixed for free? From service advisors asking if you, “could just scan it and take a look” to customers coming in saying that something worked when it came in when they know very well that it didn’t! Ladies and gents, there is really nothing worse than looking through a pile of spent repair orders and seeing 0’s next to the labor times- so just say no. When someone wants you to do something, make them write up a repair order. Sometimes it works out well for all of the parties involved because there was some warranty that the customer didn't even know about! The old saying goes that you’re not paying a technician for the time it took to fix it, you also paying them for the time it took for them to learn how to fix it properly- and with some of the schooling and extra brand training out there this stuff is absolutely not free.Uncle Jimmy congratulates you for fixing cars and making him late to work, and name drops the Open Door Mission in Rochester because if you give your labor away for free you will be homeless. Episode 70: Responsibility of Parts Stores? Dec 04, 2019

We have all seen epic fails on the part of DIY’ers (and in fact, we highly suggest you share them on this post) but how much of it is on the person who did the “repair”? That is a serious question because some of the larger auto parts companies spend a lot of time and money telling people that they can do various repairs themselves. They further enable them by loaning the tools needed to do the job at little to no cost. The bottom line for why this advertising works, and it absolutely does work (just look at how many DIY fails there are out there), is because they are aiming it at an audience that doesn't want to pay mechanics for things that they think are simple. The next big question is whether or not that person is going to return to you with broken parts because they didn't know how to install them properly, and the answer is more often than not, yes! So bottom line, if you have no business working on a car, please don’t. If you're going to anyways, at least let us get to a good vantage point so we can put it on youtube. Also Uncle Jimmy proposes the “put something valuable in front of your car after doing a brake job to see how well you did” challenge. This episode was made possible by our listeners, the members of the Grease the Wheels Nation. It was also made possible by donations over at patreon.com/greasethewheels, because as you can probably tell, this is a long ass episode. It took a lot of storage to get done and it wouldn’t be possible without our patrons, so thank you all so much! What is the most important automaker of all time? That’s a difficult question when you really break it down and as is so often the case it depends on who you’re asking Some people might argue longevity and heritage. Hardcore petrol/gearheads might argue motorsport success and bringing gobs of power to the masses. Sentimental people might go with something deeply personal, like the fact that their parents always had one, so the nostalgia factor creeps in. Numbers people would probably argue for profitability — how many units were produced and how much of the world they conquered. Big picture people always look for industry-changing innovations that shaped the automotive landscape for years to come. Detail-oriented people will look for things like how the doors shut and the feel of the ride. All of these people will almost all have different answers to that question posed in the first sentence, but what about a brand that people forgot about? A brand that made cars for 107 years in the heart of Michigan....that invented the assembly line.... that helped invent the automatic transmission and made it a mainstream luxury.... that turbocharged their aluminum V8 and gave it water injection, oh by the way, in the early 60s....that helped win a world war. ...that made one of the first overhead valve V8’s. ...that took a 455ci V8 and made it front-wheel drive the hard way....that came out with countless crossover and small SUV prototypes, in the 80s and early 90s- 30 years before they became the most common things on the road....and whose death rattle produced a way to move cars to the masses through a warranty so good, it has become the norm.So come with us, as we explore one of the most important automakers of all time in our first installment of “The Makes” by Grease the Wheels. In this episode, we talk about some of the innovations carried out and invented by Oldsmobile that have completely defined the automotive world today. It’s just a shame that they are not around to see it. Also, Uncle Jimmy talks about running over a “steaming pile of guts,” pitches LS swapping a space shuttle, and Erik forces him to talk about a truly great idea with disastrous execution. This episode was made possible by our listeners, the members of the Grease the Wheels Nation. It was also made possible by donations over at patreon.com/greasethewheels, because as you can probably tell, this is a long ass episode. On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we explore the idea that not many jobs have gotten harder over the past 110 years. We find ourselves in a spot where were getting paid less but doing and having to know a lot more in order to successfully do our jobs as mechanics. Early on, knowing how to fix cars was necessary in order to own a car, but the cars have gotten a lot better over the past 110 years. However, this degree of difficulty compounded when there are more brands, new systems, and things that the government makes mandatory such as engine computers and rear view cameras. Now we know that the basics don’t change because you cant really change the laws of physics, but the sheer volume of additional features even on cheap basic cars have made the job significantly harder for mechanics across the board. Despite all of this, the pay has not increased commensurate with the amount of knowledge required to do the job. This is only going to get worse as electric cars become more mainstream, but the fact remains the same: If you're a technician you need to increase your skill level and making yourself more valuable. Because when your current boss won't give you a proper raise, you can give yourself one- by greasing the wheels. Also Uncle Jimmy conceptualizes backup cameras on Ford Pinto’s- so you can watch what's going to cause your car to burst into flames in 1080p, and discusses the anti-theft properties of the three-on-the-tree manual transmission.Hey GTW Nation, we have a Patreon! On this week’s episode of Grease the Wheels, we are covering a topic with a tagline that we all know and love, “that’s not my job!” Things like: topping off the washer solvent, checking tire pressures and windshield wipers, dealing with spent tires or the detritus strewn all over your bay- that stuff. When you’re flat rate, you're right, it's not your job! You're not getting paid to do those things. You’re doing to get paid exactly what's on the repair order. If we don't get paid for it, we’re not going to put the effort forward especially when it is something time consuming like a “complimentary inspection.” We also add an essential question to your arsenal for job interviews: “how do you get non running cars into the shop?” Because if they have a stupid answer like, “well the technicians push them in”, run! Because when you play stupid games you win stupid prizes. Bottom line, when jobs are not getting done in the shop, take your service managers to task, because all of your time is accounted for on the repair orders and if they don’t want to do it, they will hire someone else to pick up the slack. Also, Uncle Jimmy does math and talks about the geopolitics of snow tires.Grease the Wheels is paid for by viewers like you through our friends at Patreon.com/greasethewheels. On this week’s episode of Grease the Wheels we are going over a subject that we find very touchy: losing tools. Where do they go, why they go there, and what happens to them when they get there? First off, nothing ruins Uncle Jimmy’s day more than losing a tool, but we’ll get into that a bit later. Some of us can’t function when we lose tools. For the most part, we can afford to buy a new tool when we lose one, but we really don’t want to! We don’t know if you feel the same way about your tools, but for the most part we use them for so many different jobs that earn us money, and they are valuable because of the magic that we can do with these tools. We can do pretty much everything we want to do to a car with our tools. This is compounded when its an important tool for the job that were doing, and it can absolutely derail our day. Sometimes the reason you lose a tool can make the situation worse. Sometimes its the timing of losing a tool that aggravates you: losing a tool at 4:30 on a friday because of a waiter is a special brand of hell. Some of us lose lots of tools, but somehow it is never equitable because when you lose an expensive tool, you will never find another expensive tool right away to balance out the books. If you lose a tool and it ruins your day, all we can say is that you're not alone. All we can say is, have solidarity and help people out when people need to find their toolsAlso, Uncle Jimmy goes on a much more explicit version of Homer’s Odyssey for his 11mm wrench, and finds it about a quarter mile from the shop after 3 days being missing in action. We have long held that we have the best listenership on the internet. So for the cost of a beer, you can keep us on the air! Hit up patreon.com/greasethewheels and throw a few bucks our way to get access to our private discord server, tee shirts, toolbox magnets, and all sorts of other Grease the Wheels swag. On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we’re talking about leaving your job for good. This one is near and dear to our hearts and probably yours too (hopefully not, but probably). We’ve experienced every which way to leave a job, with the exception of faking your own death. Leaving a job and knowing where you're going next is fairly important. However, because of the technician shortage, this frees you up in contrast to other industries where there are more bodies than open positions. Were not saying that you should pull some sort of outrageous stunt to get fired, because a lot of the time the things that you do at a shop will end up following you around and possibly even black list you in certain circles. The generally accepted way to leave a job is by giving your employer a 2 weeks notice and if you're wondering if you’re valuable employee this is a quick way to figure it out. They may offer you more money to stay or they may offer you whatever you want to keep you there. This can backfire greatly if you think you’re a better employee than you actually are. Managers often take it personally when you say that you're going to leave, so you have to be wary of this. The most important thing is to let them know the real reasons why you're quitting. Tell them the truth, and you might want to be ready to leave at that moment, because the truth hurts. Also, after you leave for the next 6-8 months, all of the problems that they have, no matter what they are, are going to be your fault. Even if it has nothing to do with the employee that left the job. This is going to happen no matter how you leave, it’s just too convenient. Also, Uncle Jimmy outlines the perfect way to rage quit a job and reminds us: if you're going to burnout of your former job with your toolbox in the back of your truck, make sure it's properly fastened down. On this week’s episode of Grease the wheels, we are talking about people thinking that they can do our job. It’s basic human nature to think that you can do something because you have seen someone else do it. However, “monkey see, monkey do” technicians often cause catastrophic failures. Because these technicians are paid next to nothing, they don't get fired despite finding out pretty much right away that it's a lot harder than it looks. This doesn’t just account for other technicians, we’re really talking about anyone who says those famous last words, “oh I can do that!” We've all seen people who think that they can do things themselves and have completely destroyed their car, and then they have to bring their car to you. However hands down the worst, “oh I can do that” comes from management that has never been a technician, and often leads to some explosive interactions. Bottom line, if someone tells you that they can do your job, point them to your toolbox and let them have at it. Because they will be proven wrong, very quickly. For those of you that are technicians, carry on, keep doing what you're doing, and be appreciative of the people that know what they're doing. No one is going out there and going into this field, because they think that they think they can and they are being proven wrong. Uncle Jimmy talks about his mental health and discusses his nominee for “peice of shit of the year”.This episode of Grease the Wheels is sponsored by toolheadzcrate.com. On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels were talking about some of the horrible things we do to cars. Sure, customers are great at doing terrible things to cars but often times when we do terrible things to cars it's completely on purpose. We don't have any qualms about this because at the end of the day cars are consumer products: you buy them, you use them, and when you're done you throw them away. But before we throw them away, we can have a lot of fun with them. Shooting cars for example is great stress relief and an absolute riot because cars make for wonderful target practice. There are few things as satisfying after a long day of fixing cars, especially when you factor in assault rifles and shotguns. As mechanics we try to make every repair 100% correct. When cars are long past their due date, you almost have to hit them with huge estimates to scare these customers off. At the end of the day it becomes a sort of dance between customer and mechanic about where the line is on some cars. How much money are we going to put into this car that its no longer worth fixing, and the customer doesn’t even want to put gas into it for fear of losing $20.Also, Uncle Jimmy immitates HAL 9000 in a conversation about cars gaining sentiance to say that aftermarket spoilers are stupid.
