The Grace and Grit Podcast takes the health fairy tale you’ve heard all your life and turns it upside down and inside out, helping women rebuild their relationship with their body once and for all. Placing the focus on love and respect, rather than the aggressive demands and unrealistic expectations that have become the norm, Courtney Townley is determined to help women mend the fabric of what is driving the female health story.

Episode 583: The Invitation You Almost Missed Jun 30, 2026
    Show notes

The story our culture tells about midlife for women is almost entirely about loss. The body changing. The energy declining. The best years receding in the rearview mirror. This episode tells a different story. A truer one.

I close the month with the argument I've been building all along — that midlife, navigated with intention, is not a diminishment. It is a reorganization. A clarifying. A stripping away of tolerance for things that don't fit and a turning toward the life that actually does. The women who engage with this season as an invitation — rather than a sentence — are not just surviving it. They are becoming more themselves than they have ever been.

If you have spent this month doing the real work — the honest examination, the kept promises, the willingness to feel and to see and to try again — this episode is your reminder of why it mattered. Your best years are not behind you. They are being built right now, in choices like the ones you have been making. Don't stop.

Episode 582: The Bar Is in the Wrong Place Jun 29, 2026
    Show notes

You've been setting the bar based on who you think you should be on your best days. And then feeling like a failure every time you show up as a real person having a real day. This episode proposes a different approach — one that sounds counterintuitive but has a remarkable track record.

I make the case for starting smaller than feels significant, protecting the bare minimum, and understanding why the most durable habits are almost always the simplest ones. Not because small is your goal. Because small is what stays when everything else gets difficult. And staying is everything.

This episode is for the woman who keeps setting ambitious health goals, losing momentum, and starting over. The bar is not in the wrong place because you are not capable of more. It is in the wrong place because a bar that breaks your consistency isn't a standard — it's a trap. Let me show you where to put it instead.

Episode 581: Hate Is Not a Fuel Source Jun 28, 2026
    Show notes

I have never — not once — worked with a woman who hated every step of her health journey and managed to sustain it for years. Hate, it turns out, has terrible fuel economy. It might get you moving for a season. It will not carry you for the long haul.

This episode challenges one of the most deeply embedded beliefs in wellness culture: that discipline requires suffering, that results require sacrifice, and that if it doesn't feel hard, you're not really trying. What if that entire framework is not only wrong but actively counterproductive?

I make a compelling, practical case for enjoyment as a non-negotiable ingredient in lasting health. Not every moment. Not every workout. But the overall experience of taking care of yourself needs to have enough genuine reward built in that your brain chooses it over and over again — not because you force it, but because it wants to.

Episode 580: The Trap at Both Ends Jun 27, 2026
    Show notes

Two clients. Opposite problems. Both completely stuck. The first had so much grace for herself that she never actually began — every week a good reason, every month a better time just around the corner. The second had so much grit she was burning out — holding herself to standards that left no room for being a real human with a real life.

I share both stories and explore the trap at either end of the grace-grit spectrum — because too much of either, without the counterbalance, becomes its own kind of cage. Endless self-compassion without accountability goes nowhere. Relentless discipline without kindness cannot last.

This episode helps you identify which end you tend to tip toward — and what it would look like to develop more of the quality you've been avoiding. Because deep health and genuine happiness live in the space between. And that space is exactly where this work has been pointing all along.

Episode 579: The Good Fight Is Worth It Jun 26, 2026
    Show notes

At some point in almost every woman's health journey, the difficulty of the process starts to feel like evidence that something has gone wrong. Like the struggle itself is a sign she's not cut out for this, or that it shouldn't be this hard, or that other women have it figured out in ways she doesn't. I want to gently, firmly challenge that story.

I make the case that struggle is not the obstacle to growth. It is the mechanism of growth. The discomfort of changing deeply ingrained patterns, of learning to treat yourself differently, of rebuilding trust with your own body — that discomfort means something is actually happening. Something real.

This episode is for the woman who is in the middle of the hard part and wondering if it's worth it. It is. The only way out is through. And the through changes you in ways the easy path never could.

Episode 578: The Athlete's Secret Midlife Women Need to Steal Jun 25, 2026
    Show notes

Elite athletes don't train at the same intensity 365 days a year. They build in cycles of high effort and deliberate recovery. And their long-term performance isn't just maintained because of this — it's better because of it. I think midlife women need to steal this principle immediately.

I make the case for a periodized approach to health and self-care — one that allows for the full range of seasons your life actually contains, rather than demanding a constant intensity that no human body, and certainly no midlife body, can sustainably deliver.

This episode reframes flexibility not as inconsistency but as strategy. The woman who shows up every day — scaling to ten minutes on hard days and an hour on easy ones — will go further in a year than the woman who demands perfection and quits when life doesn't cooperate. The thread doesn't break. It changes texture. And that makes all the difference.

Episode 577: The Shame Spiral Has an Off Switch Jun 24, 2026
    Show notes

You know the feeling. You got off track. And instead of course-correcting, you spent the next three days — or three weeks — making it worse, feeling terrible about it, and somehow still not finding your way back. This episode is about how to get out faster.

I unpack the mechanism behind the shame spiral — why it's so predictable, why self-criticism doesn't actually produce the correction it promises, and what does. I introduce two questions that short-circuit the spiral before it takes hold: So what? Now what? Simple words. A completely different outcome.

This is not about lowering your standards or pretending things didn't go sideways. It's about refusing to make your setbacks bigger than they are — and learning to recover with enough speed and grace that the thread of your consistency never fully breaks.

Episode 576: The Campfire Principle Jun 23, 2026
    Show notes

You don't fall off your health practices in one dramatic moment. You drift. Slowly, almost imperceptibly — one small compromise at a time, one skipped morning routine, one week where things got busy and you told yourself you'd get back to it. And then you look up and realize the fire has gone out.

I introduce the Campfire Principle — the idea that it is infinitely easier to add a log to a dimming fire than to restart one that has gone cold. And I share the story of a client who broke the cycle of falling completely off track by learning something surprisingly simple: how to recognize her own earliest signals of drift.

This episode will help you identify your personal misalignment cues — the specific, early signs that you are starting to drift — so you can do something about it while the fire is still burning. Not when it's out.

Episode 575: You Are Not Your Thoughts Jun 22, 2026
    Show notes

There is a thought — probably more than one — that is running your health journey from behind the scenes. Not a conscious strategy. A background belief that shapes what you attempt, what you avoid, how you interpret setbacks, and whether you keep going when things get hard. And most women have never stopped to examine it.

I explore what it means to become a deliberate observer of your own thinking — not to eliminate difficult thoughts, but to stop giving them automatic authority. Because a thought is not a fact. It's a proposal. And you get to decide whether to believe it.

I make the case that the most powerful health intervention available to many women isn't physical at all. It's learning to notice the thoughts that aren't serving you — and practicing, one moment at a time, choosing a different one. That practice, done consistently, produces real, lasting change.

Episode 574: The Women Who Actually Stay Consistent Jun 21, 2026
    Show notes

The most consistent women I've ever worked with are not the ones with the strongest willpower or the most perfectly structured lives. They're the ones who fall off less dramatically — and come back most quickly. That combination is learnable. And this episode will show you how.

I challenge the most common misconception about consistency: that it requires intensity, rigidity, and an unwillingness to bend. In reality, the women who stay consistent for years are the ones who have learned to adapt without abandoning — to scale without quitting — to treat life's disruptions not as reasons to stop, but as variables to plan for.

This episode will shift how you think about what it means to be a consistent person. It's not a personality trait you either have or don't. It's a set of skills. And every one of them can be developed.
