Cristela Alonzo's Hello, Es NASA Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

This week, host Jesse David Fox welcomes comedian, actor, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo! Creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, Alonzo was the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy. Her debut Netflix special Lower Classy was released in 2017, and now Cristela's back with her second: Middle Classy. Instead of choosing a joke from her aforementioned new special, Cristela decided to go with something a little more symbolic of her life and career as a stand up: Hello, Es NASA. Not only is it the first joke she ever wrote about her family, but it's one of her first big jokes, period. From Conan to Last Comic Standing, to getting feedback that directly led to jokes written for Middle Classy, this joke and interview are a case study for Cristela Alonzo's success.

This week on Good One, host Jesse David Fox gets ahold of A Black Lady Sketch Show creator, writer, and actor Robin Thede! After three strong seasons and working on a fourth, Robin came on the show to nerd out about sketch comedy. Show notes

Hello and welcome to Good One: A Podcast About Jokes, on a Tuesday! This week in addition to our regularly scheduled Thursday programming, we're bringing you a special Tuesday bonus!

If you're a Barry fan, you'll know the HBO Max show's season 3 finale aired last week, and it was nuts. Host Jesse David Fox sat down with Bill Hader for a very spoiler-heavy chat about what went down: Hader explained why it was time for Barry to get caught, how Cousineau found the courage to give the best performance of his life, and what season three is saying about forgiveness, love, and existence.

Here is a link to Jesse's article about the finale on Vulture.

More recently, Liz took a break from comedy to create the Hulu drama The Dropout, based on the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos. This week's episode of Good One is a bit of a doozy: it was recorded when host Jesse David Fox was still on book leave, and so we booked the indescribable Ms. Pat to talk to her good friend and fellow podcaster/comedian Bert Kreischer about a joke from her new Netflix special, Y'all Wanna Hear Something Crazy?

How The Right Makes Comedy Work For Them May 12, 2022
    Show notes

I know we say this a lot, but this week, host Jesse David Fox is bringing something a little different to the Good One feed: Instead of a comedian talking about a bit they wrote and love that explains what they're trying to do with their comedy, he brought two academics into the (digital) studio!

Meet Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx, authors of the new book That's Not Funny: How The Right Makes Comedy Work For Them. The book is a call to pay attention to the emergence of right-wing comedy and the political power of humor. That's Not Funny argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx take readers––particularly self-described liberals––on a tour of contemporary conservative comedy and the "right-wing comedy complex."

Together, Matt and Nick walk Jesse through every section of the book, and discuss everything from Jesse Watters's branding as the "conservative John Stewart", to Joe Rogan's hold on pop culture, to the intentional political incorrectness of shows like Legion of Skanks. They also cover the history of right wing comedy, and how the genre manages to successfully capture the ad dollars of the straight while male.
