In good news this episode, we learn that COVID-19 doesn't stop 70 years of love, reduced human activity due to the virus has helped endangered sea turtles, and much more. COVID-19 has brought about isolation that's caused many people's mental health to suffer, and that's why I'm finding it more and more important to learn and pay attention to my own. What better way to learn than connecting with an organization which focuses on mental health that's not to far from home? That's why this episode's community spotlight is Newport Mental Health.

Welcome back to new episodes of Good News: A Podcast. A special thanks to Craig Jessup who sent me some listener good news last month which helped bring this show back. In the US, it's apparent that people are finding ways to celebrate graduations despite them being cancelled due to COVID-19. And, around the world people are continuing to do random acts of kindness. It seems that almost two months into quarantine, people are still finding ways to get some good out of a bad situation.

In addition to random acts of kindness and graduations, this week we hear more from Rose Cayetano and how her crocheting is helping people in need. And, this past week Captain Tom Moore celebrated his 100th birthday. Happy birthday and thank you for helping raise $39 million for the U.K.'s National Health Service.

This week's artist spotlight is close to my heart: Angel Comedy. Angel Comedy is an institution at the heart of the UK comedy circuit run by comedians for comedians. And, it's where I first decided I was going to pursue stand-up comedy.

Alliterations aside, Good News: A Podcast is back to share some of your silver linings during uncertain and quarantined times. Globally, we are in an unprecedented position with an ongoing pandemic, but from bad situations there can still be some good happenings.

That said, the show is going to be a little different. This time, Good News is going to be listener driven. I’m looking for you, the listeners, to help generate the content.

Why are satirical news shows now considered journalism? That's what we're looking at this week. Spoiler alert, it has a lot to do with Jon Stewart and The Daily Show.

As always, there's news to know and good news. This week's good news has a family helping out one of their own, Britain's increase in green energy, promising results from from a new MS treatment and a date for Romeo, the world's loneliest frog.

***Correction*** in this week's episode, I said Stewart was on the cover of Rolling Stone and deemed most trusted name in news in 2009. Stewart was on the cover of Rolling Stone in 2004. However, Stewart was named most trusted newscaster by Time Magazine in 2009.

A new record is on the verge of being set. Unfortunately, it's the longest U.S. government shutdown. After a week of lightheartedness looking at a topic that might be taken for granted, this week's feature is an explainer on why, how and what are the impacts of the partial U.S. government shutdown.

Despite the feature focusing on the government staring contest that's taking away pay from hundreds of thousands of government employees, the show's still got good news. Citizens are stepping up where the government is lacking, Pakistani officials say the country is on track to eradicate polio in 2019, U.S. cancer mortality rates have declined for the last 25 years and a doctor makes a blanket every time he delivers a baby.

As few as 8 percent of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions, yet up to 45 percent of Americans make them anyway. So why make New Year’s resolutions? They’re silly. But, is it not worth doing something silly?

Good News: A Podcast is back with a colon, not a dash, a new logo and a new structure. With all that change, there’s still good news and news to know.

In good news, with 2018 behind us, a number of media outlets published compilations of good news that happened during the year. Some of the stories include, in Saudi Arabia, women are finally able to drive, the U.S. saw its highest voter turnout in a midterm election in a century, the entire Thai soccer team was rescued from a cave, and China's ban of ivory in 2017 helped decrease elephant poaching in 2018. On Wednesdays, Good News - A Podcast puts out an episode to help counterbalance the often negative news cycle.

This week in good news: Reader's Digest announced the winner of the 2018 Nicest Places in America competition. This year, Yassin's Falafel House in Knoxville, Tenn. took the title.

Last week, Vox published an article titled, “23 Charts And Maps That Show The World Is Getting Much, Much Better” with the subtitle, “These Are Bleak Times - But A Lot Of Things Are Improving.”

In an act of helping a community in need after Hurricane Michael, last week a Waffle House food truck drove into Panama City, Fla. and gave out free food.

Just over a month ago, Dunkirk, France became the largest European city to have free public transportation for all. No cards, tickets, or passes needed for anyone - including tourists - to travel by bus.

And, a father confronted his son’s bully. From doing so, not only did the man's son and the boy become friends, but the father helped a family in need.

Treat Yo Self. The news can be overwhelming and emotionally taxing. While a goal of Good News - A Podcast is to get people to engage with the news, sometimes you can get caught in the cycle and become weighed down. So, on Treat Yo Self Tuesday remember a lot of people, probably an embarrassing amount, don’t really follow the news - and they’re doing well. I don’t believe that’s the best way to go through life because it’s important to know what’s going on, but there’s a healthy balance to find. If you’re feeling like the news has got you down, it’s okay to step away. Good news is coming tomorrow, so treat yo self today.

"Before starting, I believe important news falls into two categories: things that’ll impact you and things you should be aware of. I don’t know what’ll impact you, but if you don’t follow the news, and you want to stay informed, this’ll get you aware of what’s going on." This week's stories in detail: Jamal Khashoggi's death, Sears filing for bankruptcy, Canada legalizing cannabis, the Red Sox are in the World Series and predictions for the highest voter turnout since the mid 1960s. Other stories in the news that are important to note: Elections are the ongoing in Afghanistan. On Monday, a lawsuit filed against Harvard claiming bias against Asian-Americans in admissions arrived in a federal court. Elizabeth Warren, a democratic senator from Massachusetts and likely presidential candidate, received a DNA test which identified Native American DNA in her from six to 10 generations ago. And, areas impacted by Hurricane Michael are still in recovery. It’s always important to remember the devastation of a storm lasts much longer than the storm itself.
