Dan Wetzel on the Coach Prime Effect, WTF MNF, Fighting the Buckeyes + F1 - EP 75 Sep 20, 2023

Show notes

The title says it, but seriously Monday Night Football WTF was that?! NFL Week 2 ended with last night’s double header, featuring New Orleans at Carolina and Cleveland at Pittsburgh. Smetty’s Steelers came through with a dub thanks to their stud like defense. The offense…that’s another story. The Panthers just can’t get it together, even with Bryce Young at the helm. Golic wasn’t too impressed with the Saints offense, but he was happy that all points on the board came from fellow former Fighting Irish. Last night raises the question though, is any football good football? The duo is joined by Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports columnist, and co-host of College Football Enquirer Podcast, to discuss the impressive effects of Deion Sanders leading Colorado. The Colorado State vs Colorado was the most watched college football game of the week, bringing in 9.3 million viewers. Dan compares what Coach Prime has done to the old glory days of Notre Dame and calls it a bigger hype than the USC days of Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush. They go on to discuss changes in college football recruitment, NIL portal battles, and the future of Marcus Freeman. Mike and Jess dive further into the upcoming Ohio St vs Notre Dame game and discuss the exciting win in F1 (and for once it wasn’t Max Verstappen).

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly of NFL Week 1, College Football Continues to Surprise Us, & Coco Gauff Can’t Be Stopped - EP 74 Sep 13, 2023

Show notes

Mike and Jess start off with the shocking Monday night game where the Jets hosted the Bills to close out Week 1 of the 2023 season. They break down the Aaron Rodgers injury, what it means for the Jets moving forward and the amazing fact that…the Jets STILL WON. Jess questions if the field conditions had anything to do with the game and Mike wonders what QB they’re going to call. (Tom Brady – are you sure you’re done?) Golic recaps being at the Kansas City game against the Lions with Gojo and seeing stars on the sideline. The team talks about who makes them worried after this week and Jess isn’t happy with what she saw from her Steelers. They discuss the big CFB game out of this weekend – the Texas v Alabama rematch from last year (it didn’t end well for the Tide). Deion Sanders and his Colorado team are now ranked 18th and it doesn’t look like their momentum will stop any time soon…until they meet Oregon and USC? And, of course, we can’t end our CFB talk without some Notre Dame. Golic and Smetty round out today’s episode with praises for both US Open champs Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff, with her incredible first Grand Slam title at just 19 years old.

College Football Week 1 Recap with Ryan Nanni, Golic is On the Road for Week 1 NFL, US Open Has a Star in Coco Gauff & F1 Better Watch Their Problem Ep 73 Sep 06, 2023

Show notes

Mike and Jess are joined by Ryan Nanni of Shutdown Fullcast! Ryan admits that Jess and Gojo are the only people who could make him excited to go see a Notre Dame game. Nanni goes over a metric tracker he created for the Iowa football team this season based on VERY specific numbers related to a Brian Ferentz contract (it’s not off to a great start). The group goes over the Deion Sanders effect on Colorado and their huge upset against TCU this past weekend. Where does Ryan have them on his rankings? Moving on, they go over the sad, sad loss Clemson had against Duke in what Ryan calls “weird luck”. Jess doesn’t think the Baylor vs Texas State game is getting enough love. The crew rounds out their discussion with team picks, Free Jim Harbaugh and Peacock access. Golic is going with Gojo to Kansas City for their season opener against the Lions for the “world’s largest tailgate”. They deep dive into previewing Week 1 for the NFL, including Jess’ thoughts on Kyler Murray. The US Open has a grip on Jess and she can’t get enough of tennis star Coco Gauff. Do people still want to watch F1 if Max Verstappen keeps wining? Plus, the F1 has a serious watch problem.

Notre Dame Win & Ireland Trip Recap, Worst Day in the NFL, Matt Stafford Can’t Hang, Simone Biles, Coco Gauff & more! - Ep. 72 Aug 29, 2023

Show notes

Mike and Jess are stateside again after watching their Fighting Irish put the dub in Dublin. While the duo recaps their trip, Golic shares his story of how he finally ended up in Ireland and it is what travel nightmares are made of. All was soon forgotten when Mike got to meet an iconic superstar in a pub, and to his surprise, he didn’t even need to re-introduce himself. The pair discuss new QB Sam Hartman, who led his team to a 42-3 victory over Navy. Rumors of the ACC being expanded bring up discussion of players unionizing and revenue shares, leading Jess to agree with thoughts from Jim Harbaugh (we were shocked too). Golic brings up cut day in the NFL, sharing his own experiences, including what Jess says is “the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard”. Matt Stafford and his team have something in common with Golic & Smetty, and according to her, Stafford’s an ageist. The two celebrate the greatness of Simone Biles, Jess sides with tennis player Coco Gauff, and they round out today’s episode with updates on the mess with Luis Rubiales.

World Cup Win, Revisiting 80 for Brady with Charlotte Wilder and NFL Preseason with Charles McDonald - Ep. 71 Aug 22, 2023

Show notes

The luck of the Irish is not on Golic’s side as he keeps trying to make his way to Ireland for Notre Dame’s big game against Navy this weekend, but travel plans just won’t let him. So, Smetty takes the reins for this episode with Charlotte Wilder, Co-Host of Oddball and guest on The Dan Le Batard Show, and Charles McDonald, from Yahoo! Sports. Charlotte and Jess discuss Spain making history as the Women’s World Cup winner, as well as the awkwardness that ensued in the aftermath. Jess is confused as to why 80 for Brady made Charlotte cry and can’t figure out one of Europe’s more complicated amenities: the toilet. Charles McDonald also joins the show as he shares his opinions of the Raven’s failed preseason streak, who ranks best to worst in rookie QBs and what the Colts are doing wrong (again). McDonald shares his thoughts on what he’s seen from the field of a well-watched team and finds out that meal prepping is a full-time job.

Shark Attacks, Barbie review, Women’s World Cup and Everyone Loved Raymond - Ep. 68 Jul 25, 2023

Show notes

Golic & Smetty are back from vacation and with a ton of sports to talk about, naturally shark attacks are the main topic of discussion. Mike had and awesome time playing with celebrities at the American Century Championship, and certainly wasn’t discouraged as he was asked where the real celebrities were. Team USA gets their first win of the World Cup as their first game was all about getting used to playing with each other. Soccer is making huge headlines in the US as the World Cup continues and Messi-mania hits Miami (Ft. Lauderdale) with his game-winning goal, and another star gets an offer to head to Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, for Saquon Barkley, he’s not getting Mbappé money with his new deal, and no running backs will be anytime soon. Plus, Mike and Jess each give their reviews on Barbie!

Show notes

Mike and Jess are fresh off the golf course at Notre Dame for this week's Golic & Smetty. The Golic Family Foundation hosted their 2nd Annual SubPar Classic to benefit charitable organizations in the greater South Bend community. Despite a driving rain, Jess managed to sink a couple putts, get the golf cart stuck, and heckle Mike as he scooted around the course. Also in the show, debating whether or not we want to see a Hard Knocks starring Aaron Rodgers this year, Devon Allen skipping preseason football for the Track & Field World Championships, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton's legacies, and what MLB storylines could have ESPN cutting into college football games come the fall. Come for the sports, stay for the Mike Golic karaoke.
