    Going Thru It

We are Going Thru It, a weekly conversation between two sisters learning to navigate their own grief after the recent loss of their brother, Adam, who died of stage IV colorectal cancer. Born 11 years apart and currently living on opposite ends of the country, Holly and Jill Shakoor remain each other’s best friend and confidant. Like a cathartic conversation with your best friend, or for some, an actual therapy session, Going Thru It will serve as a platform for human connection exploring the many layers of loss and love. So come along on this journey with two honest, sharp, semi soulful and empathetically entertaining sisters as they process collective family grief in real time.

    Summertime Sadness…..With a Side of Optimism Sep 11, 2026
    Show notes

After taking the summer off, we’re back and there is A LOT to catch up on. With August and summer officially over, we chat about our trip overseas for a family wedding, babies and the selective memory that comes with having kids. Also, is carrying your luggage on really a win? We say no….. But with September 11th marking three years since losing our brother, this time of year also comes with a heaviness that never really goes away. Recognizing that we each felt Adam with us in Italy, we imagine exactly where he would have fit into the wedding festivities and realize all the unexpected ways he continues to show up as our relationships with him somehow keep evolving. And somewhere between the summertime sadness, the end-of-summer blues and our collective grief, we realized something…..what if these are he good times? And what if, for once, we actually know it while going thru it?

Au Revoir Lalie! Jul 14, 2026
    Show notes

    Meet Lalie.

She's French. She makes an exceptional cheese board, believes dinner should never be rushed, watched 14 seasons of Grey's Anatomy in two months, and spent the last two years helping raise my daughters.

She came here as our au pair and left as family.

Before heading home to Amiens, France, we sat down to talk about leaving home in your twenties, the American Dream, and why everything in France is just better. But somewhere along the way, I was reminded that sometimes the people who arrive after the hardest chapter of your life can still help you carry it.

    À bientôt, Lalie.

    Knicks in 5!!! Jun 18, 2026
    Show notes

No one was a bigger Knicks fan than our brother Adam. So when the Knicks finally won their first championship in 53 years, there was no way we weren't coming together to celebrate.

The Knicks are champions. We still can't quite believe we're typing those words.

In this episode, we're talking about a win that felt bigger than basketball. The hope. The city. The joy. A team that truly feels like a family. And the way an entire fan base that has waited decades for this somehow came together all at once.

We also talk about Adam. Because there was no way to experience this moment without thinking about him. And while we wish he were here, neither of us can shake the feeling that he was.

Maybe that's grief. Maybe that's faith. Maybe it's just what happens when something this magical finally comes true.

This one's for Adam. And for every Knicks fan who waited their whole life for this moment.

Go New York. Go New York. Go. 🧡💙

NY or Nothing with Cousin Jeff Jun 03, 2026
    Show notes

Knicks in the Finals…..Cousin Jeff on the mic…..no notes.

This week, it’s just Holly and CJ—talking ‘94, Madison Square Garden, and the energy of New York then vs now…..and why this run feels different (in a good way…..and a hard way).

We get into family, Syrian grandmothers, busting balls as a love language, and why sports somehow ends up being the glue for everything.

And yeah…..we talk about Adam. What it’s like watching this without him and the weird way something like this can bring you back to people you’ve lost.

So let's GO orange and blue. NY Forever. Always Knicks.

The One With Ro Apr 24, 2026
    Show notes

There are some people you meet in life who just feel different.

Ro is one of them. She came into Adam’s life in 2021, and it’s no surprise she was the one who had his heart. She’s truly one of a kind. Someone special, funny, strong AF… and someone who shows up in a way that changes the people around her.

This conversation is about them. How they met, the fun they had, the concerts, the trips and the random moments that made it all feel so easy. It’s also about who she is. And why we all love her.

We learned a lot from Ro. We still do.

And we’re all better because of her.

The One With His Friends Apr 23, 2026
    Show notes

This Friday marks two years of Going Thru It… and it’s Adam’s birthday. So this week, we did what felt right. We sat down with three of the people who knew him best. Christopher Salviano. Zak Kaslow. Jonathan Collazo. Three friends. Three completely different relationships. Three versions of Adam that somehow all feel exactly the same.

We talk Jersey childhood memories, Knicks games, college roommates, camp chaos, and the very specific things that made Adam Adam....from warm soda and Tupac loyalty to obsessive hyper-fixations, inside jokes, and a sense of humor that not everyone got… but the right people really did.

More than anything, this episode is about friendship. The kind that spans decades. The kind that shows up in the big moments and the completely mundane ones. The kind that doesn’t go anywhere. And the kind that, even now, still feels very much alive.

    A Proper Catch Up Mar 26, 2026
    Show notes

No guest. No agenda. Just a long overdue catch-up.

Holly's in Hawaii.... but it's rained nonstop, the power's out and we've somehow been to the movies three times already. We talk Jill's London trip without Luca and what it actually looks like to step back into your "old life."

There's a little bit of everything - plus Survivor chaos, Oscars discourse and why Holly's algorithm is currently all cancer, all the time.

No plan. Just a proper catch-up.

Oscar Sunday: Hollywood Dreams & Magic with Brett Gursky Mar 13, 2026
    Show notes

Oscar Sunday is here, and with Jill out, we’re joined by friend, fellow Jersey kid, and Hollywood multi-hyphenate Brett Gursky for Going Thru It’s official-but-unofficial Oscars episode. We go way back with Brett to our college study abroad days, when we sat at a bar in London pitching movie ideas and talking about moving to LA to work in Hollywood. Somehow, we both actually kind of did.

In this episode, we reminisce about shared pipe dreams and real careers, sibling bonds, grandparent grief, signs from beyond, and why so many of this year’s most talked-about films are ultimately about loss. Oscar predictions are made, performances we loved are declared, and we get into the strange magic of being witnessed by old friends who knew you before any of it happened.

Control Is an Illusion with Mickey Rapkin Feb 26, 2026
    Show notes

It’s one of those weeks where the headlines feel uncomfortably close to home. Between James Van Der Beek’s death from colorectal cancer and Eric Dane’s ALS diagnosis, it’s hard not to think about your own health and mortality. So we brought on our friend Mickey Rapkin — journalist, author, former GQ editor, and yes, the guy who wrote Pitch Perfect before it became a major studio franchise.

In August 2025, Mickey’s older brother Jon died from brain cancer. We talk about sibling loss (aka the worst club), the sacred inside jokes, the random movie lines that become part of your daily language, and how grief rewires you on a cellular level.

We also get into Mickey’s Men’s Health piece about cancer screenings — the big question of how much do you want to know, what testing can (and can’t) do, and why “control is an illusion” is both depressing and… oddly clarifying.

Take On Me Feb 12, 2026
    Show notes

Super Bowl Sunday is an actual holiday in the Shakoor family. This week we’re talking hosting, nostalgia, the collective viewing experience, and why the West Coast kickoff time just hits different.

Jill’s back at work with mat leave officially in the rearview mirror and the whiplash is real. Holly starts a writing class and immediately spirals after reading something very personal out loud. Vulnerability hangovers are real.

We get into evolving friend groups, mommy-and-me leveling up, and why Take On Me, specifically the acoustic version, will never sound the same again.

Still going thru it. Still taking it on.
