A first for the show, as we explore a modern horror classic that has a lot to say about psychopathic hitmen, parapolitical cults and what it's like to need a new jacuzzi in austerity-era Britain.

Danny Casolaro's investigation into The Octopus ends in a West Virginia motel room in brutal fashion. We try to piece together his last days and discuss what his death means to skeptics and believers alike. This is the hinge point of our miniseries; while Danny's role in the story ends here, we'll be following up on his leads and chasing PROMIS around the world for the remainder of the series. From here on, things only get darker.

Show notes

For no particular reason, this episode is now !UNLOCKED!

MI6, the ruins of empire, the Royal Family, arms trafficking, terrorism, oligarchs, the gangster state and more converged on a tunnel in Paris one horrifying night in August 1997. We look at a pivotal moment in the history of the modern British Establishment (in as much as anything about the Establishment is 'modern'), and examine the web of intrigue surrounding both Diana's death and the British monarchy, a web that persists up to the present day.

Danny Casolaro's pursuit of the Octopus brings him into contact with a geek burnout and spook fixer called Michael Riconosciuto. Riconosciuto is an operative of some kind (we think), and he has a lot to tell Danny about about software hacking, CIA ops, UFOs, bioweapons and gun deals in the desert. Casolaro is intoxicated, but following Rico's leads and trying to untangle truth and fantasy mires him even deeper in a bizarre underworld of rogue spies, gangsters and corrupt politicians. We also discuss the early spread of the stolen PROMIS software and consider how it might have been bugged and what its utility might have been.

48 - THE OCTOPUS 2: Danny Casolaro in Wonderland Aug 22, 2022

Show notes

Danny Casolaro is a freelance journalist on the hunt for a scoop when he hears about the Inslaw Affair. Bill Hamilton has a hell of a tale to tell him: a horror story about grinding bureaucracy, corruption in high places, rogue intelligence operatives and low-level footsoldiers for the gangster state. In hearing this, Danny's curiosity soon morphs into an all-consuming obsession.

47 - The Octopus 1: The Perfect Spy Aug 08, 2022

Show notes

Inslaw Inc developed a version of a software package called PROMIS that was leaps and bounds beyond anything comparable at the time. It was stolen by the US government and allegedly distributed to clients around the world with a secret "back door" surveillance modification. The Inslaw Affair is, for many people, the Rosetta Stone of modern American conspiracy, a high tech Watergate. Before we get truly out there, myself and the myserious Mr Benjamin Ghazi are going to use this opening episode to really get to grips with what PROMIS actually did, why it was worth stealing, and, just maybe, why it was worth killing for.
