Will the Youth Vote Save Us? Nov 07, 2022

It's November – the beginning of the end, the end of the beginning. We at Gaslit Nation have been through this such a long long time, just trying to kill the pain, and we have mitigated it somewhat together. And now we enter a new phase, where the key digital platform that allowed documentation of the crimes of the powerful and literally made our show possible – Twitter – is being steamrolled by a billionaire shitposter. (We are refusing to cede our ground and will remain on Twitter despite Musk; for more on that, listen to our Patreon bonus episode.) The attempted destruction of Twitter arrives in the midst of waves of political violence: the bludgeoning of Paul Pelosi, violent threats nationwide to poll workers and election officials, and the continuation of the election day "bloodbath" promises that criminal elites have been making for years – and the DOJ is letting it happen. We are dreading the midterms and the violence that will very likely follow; we mourn the violence that is here and the corrupt enablers in government who refused to take action when it really mattered, years ago, when we still stood a chance. Never forget that this all could have been prevented: what's predictable is preventable. They made their choice, and we made ours. The 2022 midterms are coming soon, but we at Gaslit Nation are still dealing with the unresolved business of 2016! That includes Brexit, which has produced yet another wanker in the revolving door prime minister shambles that has been going on for the last six years. We share our doubts that a guy worth more than King Charles has the interests of the common man in mind and extend our sympathy to our British listeners. Back in the states, the midterms are heating up – and "heating up", in modern American parlance, means new coup plots are being hatched, new insurrectionists are volunteering to be vote counters, and new upstanding citizens are being threatened with death or prison for the crime of…voting. And what is Merrick Garland, who vowed to protect the elections, doing about it? As usual, nothing! His free pass to the January 6 attackers have left us wary of more post-election violence to come, and the admin's refusal to protect voting rights leaves us concerned about the ability of our fellow Americans to cast their ballot. That said, we encourage you to vote! We are disillusioned but yes we are voting, and we are having several GOTV events and get-togethers this week. Then special guests drop by Gaslit Nation: Chloe Maxmin, a state senator in Maine, the youngest woman ever elected, in 2018, to Maine's House of Representatives, and her campaign manager Canyon Woodward. North Carolina and the Fate of Our Democracy Oct 20, 2022

In this special interview with Gaby Goldstein, a co-founder of Sister District, we discuss the Supreme Court case Moore v. Harper, which the court agreed to hear December 7th. Just like Citizens United empowered dark money groups to turbo-charge America's descent into far-right fascism, Moore vs. Harper will unleash a far great danger: the end of our democracy as we know it -- state governments will essentially be allowed to override the will of voters. The story of how we got here is one of state government power, and why, as we keep saying on the show, it's so important to fight like hell in state elections, and not just the races for Congress and president.
