2018 Improv March Madness Champion Nate Nulph joins the podcast for a great conversation about his first year in comedy, the foundation that lead to his podcast Usually Wrong, and the great advice I gave him the day we met that single handedly lead him to his contest victory.

Stay tuneed at the end for a special bonus mini-episode with Chris Scriva of We Got Next, that I taped as part of the Unplanned Comedy Five and Dime on March 5, 2018 at Hambone’s which took place immediately before I met Nate for the first time.

While coming back to her Pennsylvania roots for the Burning Bridges Festival, I snagged an interview with comedian JC Coccoli. JC's had a ton of success as a stand-up, appearing on Last Comic Standing Season 8 as well as producing great comedy sketches and shows.

FYI, be prepared, JC shares the most incredible Mandy Moore story you’ll ever hear.

We banter a good portion about the LA Comedy scene and how she left Pittsburgh for a go in La La Land. I enjoyed getting to know her and I think you will too! Fun fact, I learned after the mics were off, she’s going to be helping produce this year’s Pittsburgh Comedy Festival as well!

After returning home to Pittsburgh from Los Angeles, Brian Ceponis has had a string of great roles including Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and the lead Tony in Almost Grown-ups, a recent TV pilot that I also was casted. If you listen to this the day it comes out, stop out at Parkway Theater at 7p (Weds 5/2) to see a screening and meet the crew that put it together.

Loved collaborating with Brian on set and it was great to reconnect with him for this episode. We chat about his time working in LA, fatherhood, auditions, roles, and how excited we are to be returning to Altoona to shoot episode 2 later this summer.

Check out Brian in Prime Stage Theater's production of The Diary of Anne Frank. Playing at the New Hazlett Theater, May 4-13.

Always love the chance to meet new people when they come through Pittsburgh. That being said I couldn’t be more thrilled to share this chat with comedians Holly Lynnea & Connor McGrath. We recorded it during the 3rd Annual Burning Bridges Comedy Festival earlier this month. Holly hails from Louisville, KY, and Connor's from Portland, ME. We dig into each of their respective scenes, applying and picking festivals to perform at and of course their impressions of Pittsburgh and the state and pursuit of comedy glory in 2018.

What a great chat with funny people Max Boyajian & Kate Hagerty.

We started off with an appiteaser of favorite soups talk, then ease into to some favorite ACDC songs talk, then brought it home with a fantastic pairing of truly delicious comedy talk.

I do believe this episode was a multi-level, multi-course sit-down of tasteful banter. You be the judge. Bon appétit.

This week I was very excited to have local funny lady Nia Johnson in the studio. Nia has been part of the Pittsburgh comedy community for the past few years, improvising with the teams, Jeffrey The Plant, Change Machine and her new team, The Collective, which features an all African-American cast. Check them out here at The Unplanned Comedy Warehouse (See below)

We start out gushing with excitement about Rupaul’s Drag Race and our mutual friend Ramsey Daniels (Check him out on Episode 91).

Our discussion shifts to that feeling you get when you are validated as an improv performer even before you see it yourself. We talk about learning to support your scene partner, as well as taking advice on how we all can get more people to our shows: Bring your most popular uncle!

In the second half we dig into the growth of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’s recent portrayal of East Liberty, and finally wrap things up talking about the Top 10 YouTube Videos.

Garrett Titlebaum: It's Nice To See He's Working RSS

I’m fortunate enough as the host of my own podcast that I can use this show as a place to learn and gain new perspectives each week. This week on the show I invited a panel of four female comedians, Ossia Dwyer, Courtney Francis, Kelsey Claire Hagen, and Ashley McKinney for a great discussion on how gender plays a role in their lives both on and off stage.

With our next 100 episodes together I want to strive to continue to grow the different types of group conversations we have on the podcast.

I’m thrilled that you choose to listen to the show each week, but don’t forget to rate, review, subscribe, and Share the Show with your friends. Engage on the Facebook Page and follow for updates @droppingbaums on Twitter/Instagram.

Episode 100 - We Did It!

For Episode 100 I wanted the opportunity to spend an afternoon with the incredibly talented duo of Kevin O’Brien and Michelle Riches. These two have been my comedy siblings ever since we first met in 2014. Honestly and truly there are no two better people to have on this momentous occasion and they are a couple of the best human beings I’ve been fortunate enough to call my friends.

Our conversation covers a variety of comedy focused topics like having an audience focused mindset, learning to refocus nerves and expectations for a good show, and Kevin’s ability to get me to break on stage and his experience coaching and teaching musical Improv.

    100.jpg

In the time we’ve been friends the three of us have shared tons of experiences both on and off stage that have helped in us each developing our own sense of self-awareness and a comfortability about where we are in life today. It definitely comes through in this great conversation about celebrating what you have and not obsessing on what you don’t have. We talk about supporting your community when others succeed and learning to let people like what they like.

I’m so proud to see the growth these two have made as performers over the last four years and next weekend you’ll have the chance to see them thrice at Arcade Comedy Theater!

Friday, April 6, 8 PM - Your Life: The Musical

Saturday, April 7, 8 PM - Dinner with the Nolens

Saturday, April 7, 10 PM - Ted City Yodelers and Well Known Strangers

This show would not be possible without the support of this community each and every week. I’m so appreciative to have your ears each and every time you decide to tune into the program. From the bottom of my heart thank you for taking the time to support my journey in comedy, acting, and podcasting as I attempt to learn about how the people in my life are finding success in their chosen careers and passions. Thank you one and all.

There were a number of reasons why I should have had this week’s guest, Jeff Konkle, on the podcast long-long ago. For one reason or another, it just didn't happen, but I’m glad to have him here on the 99th episode of the show. Jeff is open and honest about how his hobbyist mentality towards stand-up comedy has allowed him to find fulfillment both professionally and creatively.

Now a dozen years into the craft much has changed for Jeff since starting at 22. Konkle has become a weekly staple on Pittsburgh radio as WDVE’s Mr. Wednesday, he’s headlining around Western Pennsylvania (along with working as a feature for tons of household names), and he gets to come home to his wife and two young boys.

Jeff will be headlining the debut of Sean Collier Presents at Arcade Comedy Theater this Saturday 3/24 at 8p.

    Episode 98 - Ed Bailey Mar 13, 2018

Fellow Ohioan Ed Bailey and I dig into the genesis of his podcast Drinking Partners, produced by himself and co-host Day Bracey for the Epicast Network. Ed and Day are fresh off their featured spot on "Beerland" a beer-themed TV show on the Viceland Network shot and recorded right here at the Unplanned Comedy Warehouse. I got tons of great advice on hosting and producing high-quality live comedy show. Twice a month Ed and Day host their show at the Comtra Theatre and the Arcade Comedy Theater.

We talk about the allures of Cleveland to his outlook on fatherhood and recovering from a life-threatening car accident. Ed is a common feature at comedy clubs and discusses his growing career, but as a fellow Ohioan, we must devote a little time talking all things Lebron. This conversation was a blast. What a great hour of banter.
