In a fitting tribute, Dundas names baseball stadium for Bill Nelson, team’s biggest booster

On a lazy summer weekend when overcome with an urge to see a grassroots ballgame, the cure often has been to take a drive an hour south to Dundas. The Cannon Valley League offers some of the state’s top competition, and if it’s the Dukes vs. Miesville’s Mudhens, you have an unmatched rivalry.

I was there one Sunday when there was a playoff game, with both teams guaranteed to advance to the state tourney. Immediately after the game, the managers went into a small area to draft pitchers from other Cannon Valley teams.

Joe Driscoll had been drafted by Dundas the previous year. He walked around with a beer in hand, waited a couple of minutes and then found out he would be a Mudhen for this tournament.

Driscoll tipped the beer upward in a salute and said, “Well, every team needs a role model.”

Joe died three years ago, and the world has been a less enjoyable place since then.

What’s in the latest version of Trump’s ‘big bill’ Senate Republicans are trying to pass

At some 940-pages, the legislation is a sprawling collection of tax breaks, spending cuts and other Republican priorities, including new money for national defense and deportations. Now it’s up to Congress to decide whether President Donald Trump’s signature domestic policy package will become law.

Trump told Republicans, who hold majority power in the House and Senate, to skip their holiday vacations and deliver the bill by the Fourth of July.

Senators were working through the weekend to pass the bill and send it back to the House for a final vote. Democrats are united against it.

Hortman funeral offers mix of sorrow, humor and reflection

It’s difficult to sum up the lives of two people who die so suddenly, violently and senselessly.

So it was heartening to the nearly 1,500 people gathered at the Basilica of St. Mary to hear the lives of Melissa and Mark Hortman honored with a healing mix of reflection, humor, remembrance and prayer.

“Indeed, they lived lives with purpose and meaning,” said Fr. Daniel Griffith, Pastor of the Basilica of St. Mary. “Lives lived in service of others.”

Fr. Griffith was the only one of the speakers who touched on the murders of the Hortmans, saying it should serve as another wake-up call, five years after the murder of George Floyd made Minnesota “ground zero” for racial injustice.

Weekly Scramble: We do not want to pay for college tuition benefits for undocumented immigrants!!! Jun 26, 2025

DOJ sues Minnesota over college tuition benefits for undocumented immigrants

The United States Department of Justice is suing Minnesota over state laws which offer some undocumented immigrants access to lower in-state college tuition. The government is also challenging a new state program which offers some students free tuition.

Members of the federal government are arguing these state laws “unconstitutionally discriminate” against other U.S. citizens and from other states who aren’t given the same benefits.

Most recently, state lawmakers passed the North Star Promise Program, which launched just last fall and provides state funding to cover any unpaid tuition and college fees for students from families making less than $80,000 a year. The amount of money a student receives is based on whatever costs aren’t already covered by other grants and scholarships.

Trump says Iran-Israel ceasefire in effect after accusing both sides of violating it

President Trump said Tuesday that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was "in effect," and it appeared to be holding on Tuesday afternoon after 12 days of deadly conflict between the Middle East's arch rivals.

Earlier in the morning, Mr. Trump voiced frustration with both countries and accused them of violating the agreement he had announced just hours earlier. Israel accused Iran of breaching the agreement minutes after it was intended to take effect, and said it would "respond forcefully."

But after a last-minute intervention by Mr. Trump — including a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — the bombardments appeared to cease.
