    Garage Heroes In Training

An amateur endurance auto racing team hoping to show everyone that they too can participate in performance driving or racing. We are a relatively new team and learning right along with you. Our assumption is that you know very little to nothing about the sport but are interested in learning to drive better and eventually maybe even race in a local event of interest. We will cover all forms of racing and hope to be entertaining as well as educational.

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, Alex joins us to help define what the rain line is on a track and how to find it on a track, especially when it is our first time at a track. The discussion wanders a bit, but all of it should help you in determining the rain line and allow you to optimize it to that specific day's track conditions and your car.

We would love to know if you have any goals that you can share and wish you have the best year ever, both on and off the track.

    Highlights for this episode are:

    1) Alan now organizes, preps, and runs his own car, the MooStang. We learn how this went for his first season and what we are still working on.

    2) Looking back at where we were going into this season versus where we are now, there has been a ton of progress.

    3) While the goals we all had were great, some of the discussion helps us to better define both the progress we made, as well as refining the path forward from here.

    4) We did a great job of getting a bunch of new people to the track and several drivers to the track that raced with other teams. That is the primary reason we started this podcast and is fantastic!

    5) Guess who says "I'm not just here for the Slurpees, lol". Not a big surprise for you long time home gamers.

    6) We all are looking forward to trying as many different tracks and racing series as we can this year and maybe for the first time working with a coach at the track.

    7) We managed to make a Max Headroom reference within the episode. You never know where we may wander.

    8) Vicki and Alan cannot seem to remember when they each earned their black flags this year. We also had a few black flags from several of our friends that drive with us this year. Notably, none of our all ladies team earned a flag a the Thompson event.

    9) Every year we go over what issues our cars had at the track and what we did (or are going to do) to resolve the issue long term.

    10) We have determined a key indicator that implies that a specific spare part is required for our race cars.

    11) Tips we learned on testing and replacing wheel studs for our cars.

    12) Vicki is bored winning???

    13) Our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly for the 2021 season.

    Show notes

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we try to answer the potentially unanswerable question that we hear at the track "What Tire Pressure Should I Use?". Alex joins us as we try to answer as best we can. First we go over several of the factors that can affect what the answer could be. Next we try to go into the various methods that can be used to actually determine the correct answer. To the surprise of none of the long time racers, the reference to Andy Hollis during this episode is expected. Now is we can only have Mr. Hollis as a guest on the podcast. We have a ton of questions.

GHIT 0276: Mike Kramer Honda Challenge Racing Driver

Mike Kramer has been racing in Honda Challenge and is the two time H2 champion with NASA Southeast. In addition, he also races in endurance racing with the 24 Hours of Lemons and Lucky Dog. We have several goals for this episode and one of them is not so subtly aimed at convincing Vicki the our 1993 Honda Civic being a front wheel drive car is not so bad and how much fun we will have in 2022 using it as our primary endurance racing car. Mike is a great example of how to start out and grow into an accomplished racing driver by simply making the choice to jump into the high performance driving pool and see what types interest you. It sounds like we will be at several common racing events in 2022 and we can't wait to catch up with him again.

    3) What we have and should do to our 1993 Honda Civic DX race car that we are rebuilding this winter. The discussion goes into several options for racing the car in endurance racing and sprint racing, along with possibly using it in HPDE events as well.

    4) How to choose a racing series and what to look for in your area.

    5) Advantages and Disadvantages of a front wheel drive and a rear wheel drive, as well as a few of the primary differences between the two types of cars.

    DwD 0273: Double Apex Turns

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we cover two of the potential ways to approach several turn types that you will encounter on a track. In longer turns/turns that require a large direction change like a 180 degree turn etc. In several of these turns it may be faster to try to get through the turn with a classic late apex, but in some turns, it is often better to use a double apex approach or even a V-turn. We try to discuss how to tell what you should do and several of the factors that would influence your choice. Also, this is the first episode of DwD where we have Alex as a guest host.

GHIT 0272: Tim Bagnall - Starting a New Endurance Racing Team

Tim Bagnall recently contacted us looking for getting started in endurance racing. We thought this could be a great episode and an informal 11th episode in our how to get started series that we had earlier this year (2021). Tim did most of the heavy lifting and asked us a ton of great questions and we answered as best we can at this point in our racing career. We hope this episode can answer some of your questions if you are starting out and may help you with a second opinion if you are already racing. DwD 0268: DwD Storytime - The One About Fred Lobster Trying to Kill Ben and Ann

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we have our second DwD Storytime episode where Ben recounts a recent track day event where he found a peculiarity in the "Fred Lobster" car that led to a weird issue where the steering and brakes would not respond. If this was a new car, it would likely be a safety nanny programming issue, but since this car is far from new, the true root cause is still tbd. However, the story is spectacular and the way that Ben dealt with the issue is something that we all can learn from. You never know when something can break or behave in an unexpected manner on track and part of growing as a racing driver is being able to deal with an ill behaved car or another car that does something unexpected.

They had a series of good and bad events during the race but ended up bringing home some well earned hardware. Was it a perfect race? Of course not. We aren't even sure that is possible, but each race you learn a bit more and how to solve a few more problems. The Sonoma race was no exception. Please download and learn what Jaime's team battled through and learned. They were a great group and really exemplified the true spirit of an endurance racing team.
