The Final Training Cycle of 2026: What You Need To Know Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

We break down everything coming in Cycle 4, the final cycle of 2026, so you can pick your track and know exactly what your training is going to look like.

We open with a community update from the last cycle: 39.4 million pounds lifted, 12.7 million meters moved, and 7,555 sessions logged. Then we cover the housekeeping. Endure and No Gear will not run as tracks this cycle since 96% of athletes are on Hard to Kill, Strength, or Shred, though both are still fully programmed in the app. We also give a straight status update on the iOS and Android submissions, bring back PR videos and PR shirts, and preview a new feature we are calling the athlete data room.

Then we go track by track. Hard to Kill runs speed strength as the major with a sustain minor, so expect a faster bar, more jumps and rope work, and steady conditioning held at comfortably hard. Strength backs off the upper 80s and low 90s and leans into dynamic effort work, accessory volume, and fresher joints. Shred stays with muscle endurance, density blocks, and mixed modal aerobic work for body composition.

If you are stuck picking a track, we give you the simple answer at the end, plus a reminder that the standalone programs are always there.

Rucking vs Running vs Cycling: Which One Actually Pairs With Lifting | 361 Sep 21, 2026
    Show notes

We break down the three big aerobic modalities for a concurrent training athlete and what each one actually costs you. Running has the lowest barrier to entry and the highest metabolic demand, which is exactly why it interferes with strength the most. Rucking is the easiest way to hold real Zone 2 without the volatility of a run, and the one rule that fixes almost every rucking problem is staying under 30 percent of body weight. Cycling is nearly all concentric, which makes it the cleanest partner for heavy lifting, but it costs you impact, bone density and tendon work, and it needs a bike and a proper fit.

We also get into Dave's six weeks off running with a broken toe and what that revealed about carryover, why runners lose explosive power, how the interference effect ranks across the three, and the programming rules we use: vary session types between interval, threshold and long, space hard aerobic work away from heavy lifts, and take real deloads. Overall takeaway: if you have a specific goal, train that modality. If you do not, pick the one you will actually keep doing and rotate all three.

We update the community on Dave's year-long challenge to complete a 300-pound bench press, 400-pound squat, 500-pound deadlift, and sub-20-minute 5K within one hour. We talk through the setup, the pressure on the bench first, and how Dave successfully completes all three lifts before moving on to the run. We then cover the 5K, including a watch issue, a bathroom stop, and the pacing through the early laps. Dave struggles more in the second half, but we help pace the final laps and confirm that he completes the challenge, with the actual 5K time later adjusted to 19:50.

Most people treat consistency as the finish line, but it is only the baseline. We break down the fitness standards linked to longevity, why training to the test misses the point, and how Garage Gym Athlete's Recruit, Established, and Competitor levels help you set a minimum standard you refuse to fall below.

Westside Barbell Conjugate: Steal the Principles, Skip the Program | 358 Aug 31, 2026
    Show notes

We take on the third leg of the strength series with Louie Simmons, Westside Barbell, and the conjugate method. Jerred lays out the actual structure, two max effort days and two dynamic effort days a week, why the max effort movement rotates every single session instead of repeating, how the three week dynamic effort waves are built, and what accommodating resistance with bands and chains is really doing to the strength curve. Then we get into the three principles worth stealing even if you never run the program: speed increases power and power increases strength, variance is fine so long as it is constantly rotating rather than constantly random, and athleticism has to be trained or you will quietly lose it. We also cover the honest cons, the steroid question, the recovery cost of going max effort twice a week, and why Jerred rates the conjugate system a one or two out of ten for the average athlete even though he has notebooks full of respect for the man who built it. Plus the story of Accelerate Strength and Conditioning, his conjugate program written for hybrid athletes, and where that might resurface.

Your AI Coach Is Lying to You: What Two New Studies Found | 357 Aug 24, 2026
    Show notes

We dig into two new 2026 studies that audited five popular AI chatbots on health questions, and athletic performance came back as the weakest category of the whole audit. We cover why an LLM is a prediction machine and not an all knowing coach, the sycophancy problem that lets you argue a chatbot into agreeing with whatever you already believed, and the fake citations researchers hit when they asked for references. We also get into the hard line on steroids, peptides, and supplement advice, where AI falls short on injuries and physical therapy, why a wall of jargon is usually a sign nobody understands the question, and how Jerred is thinking about guardrails before an AI coach ever shows up inside the Garage Gym Athlete app.

Our Community Proves the Method | 353 Jul 27, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode I give an update on Garage Gym Athlete after a period of burnout and uncertainty, explaining that I've spent the past seven months clarifying the company vision and rebuilding around a larger long-term mission. I cover the new website, updated branding, and new logo, as well as the move to our own web app and database — which is live now, while the Apple and Android apps are still in testing...

I also explain why owning our own platform matters: more control over the athlete experience, and access to training data that makes the programming better. Finally, I outline what's coming in video, behind-the-scenes content, and the podcast — while making the case that the community, the method, and the daily over decades mindset remain the center of everything we're building. 00:00 Why I almost quit — and what's happened since 01:28 The real subject: the 10-year vision 03:18 What's live right now: new website and branding 03:47 Why we changed the logo 05:07 Important: how to access programs you already bought 06:07 The web app is live (Apple/Android still in testing) 08:01 Why we left Train Heroic 08:29 "I thought you didn't want to be an app company" 09:29 We finally own our own database 12:20 The app roadmap — we're just getting warmed up 14:41 This is not Train Heroic 2.0 17:00 New content: YouTube, video, behind the scenes 18:08 Thank you — and why the community proves the method
