An Americana Extravaganza with an Inability to Say "No" - From The Top! Show Notes: Oklahoma! Mar 02, 2023

Show notes

(Sung with gusto and blatant misogynistic vibrato) OKLAHOMA!!!!! Mary and Steven are BACK! They pick up where they left off and critique their coverage of the classic musical in this week's Show Notes episode of From the Top! on Oklahoma!

Steven takes a deeper look into Lorenz Hart and his sordid tale of why he left this show to set the stage and the birth of theatre's feel-good duo and still has some bones to pick with some updates this show makes. Mary needs to know how blatant misogynistic Americana still rings true today and then gives Steven a run for his money in this week's Quick Cast segment.
Sit back, relax, and pretend you're enjoying a ride in a surrey with some fringe dangling around the top. Happy Listening!!!

If love is a quantifiable unit, Mary and Steven have found it in this week's installment of Show Notes, continuing their coverage of the cultural phenomenon that is RENT from last week's episode of From The Top!

Blonde moments abound for Steven in "Notes From A Director" and "Actors Nightmare" and Mary gives some amazing options in this week's Quick Cast to flip this show on its head. They both end with a magical trip to "What If" land with a story change so large, it is almost unfathomable but lets them find even more depth in what it means to live for today, and measure in love.

Sabrina is back, so you better MOOOOO with her!!!

In this episode of From The Top! Mary and Steven have Sabrina back in the booth to take a look into a 90's cult classic musical that changed a generation of theatergoers, RENT.
Steven takes a look at the tragic tale of this rock opera's origin story with Jonathan Larson and takes the lovely ladies on a journey through the original source material of a humble 1800s opera in a fun game of "compare and contrast" just how similar late 1800s was to the late 1900s. Mary speaks on how affecting this show is and her personal trials of how challenging it can be to perform, and what it takes to connect with all these amazing characters. Sabrina offers amazing perspectives on what it was like to be in this show as a main ensemble, the hard topics this show covers, and offers levity through the amazing songs this show offers.
So come as you are, sit by the burning songs for some warmth, and light a candle while you hear about what it takes to measure love.

Four Weddings and A Gibson - From The Top! Show Notes: The Drowsy Chaperone Jan 04, 2023

Show notes

The champagne keeps flowing (just don't tell no coppers, see) at the Tottendale Estate as Mary and Steven continue their journey of the raucous comedy that hosts its own musical, The Drowsy Chaperone in this week's Show Notes Episode of From the Top! Steven fills in the blanks (not from a blackout, thank goodness) with a light Notes From a Director segment, flows into an Actors Nightmare that isn't a buzzkill, and affords some fun audition tips that might be as popular as prohibition. Mary really hones in on Man in Chair, the intentions of Janet, and provides insight on healthy and non-healthy coping. The Quick Cast proves overwhelming for Steven, much to Mary's chagrin, and they end with a magical trip, that cements a direction for the end of the show nobody could imagine, even after a swig of absinthe. All this and more, so put the needle on the vinyl (aka hit that play button) and enjoy with your favorite beverage on ice. Happy Listening!!!

10.5 You'll Believe God is a Woman - From The Top! Jesus Christ Superstar Part 2 Dec 14, 2022

Show notes

Our quadruple of sinners and/or saints are back in the second installment of From The Top! covering Jesus Christ Superstar. In this episode, Mēghan Scott and Sabrina Malecek join Mary and Steven once more to tell all the fun variations and empowering moments that performing a gender-unlocked version of this show entails, including chauvinistic statements from certain auditioners, awkward audience moments, and even a woman offering to pray for viewers souls (Not to mention acrobatic silk acts to DIE for). Enjoy part two of this gang's coverage, thoughts, and raucous ramblings of a 1970's Webber smash hit.
Happy Listening!

A Pseudo "Power" and Barrels of Green Sludge - From the Top! Show Notes: The Toxic Avenger Nov 29, 2022

Show notes

Steven and Mary must have been inhaling the fumes of Tromaville, because this week's episode of Show Notes is laced with some zany and heartfelt notions as they go over their episode of The Toxic Avenger: The Musical. Corrections are made, then Steven brings up some toxic traits this show brings to the forefront, and Mary makes life-changing connections to ideas and characteristics this show spews from it's "human heart". They offer fun and quirky options for recasting, and riding their high they jump into the magical land of "What If" where they actually put up some walls. From the Top! needs an antidote in this edition of Show Notes or it might just turn into their best episode to date. Happy Listening!

9. This Episode Has A Biohazard and Recycle Label - From The Top! The Toxic Avenger: The Musical Nov 17, 2022

Show notes

Smell the fumes and put on your hazmat suits. Mary and Steven are taking you to the dank and polluted Jersey shores of Tromaville in this week's episode of From the Top! with The Toxic Avenger: The Musical. Steven faces the severely chemically burned fact that he may actually like this romp through their smallest cast show to date. Mary takes the reins, diving into the history, and poses some stomach-churning ideas as our dynamic duo peel back the melted skin of The Toxic Avenger, revealing its true heart, and deplorable, noxious, and sometimes dirty origins. Happy Listening!
