    From Paper To People

Take your ancestors from names on paper to multidimensional people who lived, breathed, loved, lost, and helped you to be who you are. Benefit from 40+ years of experience in folklore, history, genealogy, law, and tools of FamilySearch, Ancestry, Newspapers.com and more. I learn from my many mistakes, I teach from those lessons. I interview genealogists and authors. I discuss Reparational Genealogy – how Anglo- or European-American researchers can assist African-American researchers in restoring connections destroyed by centuries of chattel slavery. I even give recipes from ancestral meals in the Family Cookbook episodes. And if YOU want to be interviewed, let me know!

Reparational Genealogy for the Individual in 2020 Dec 14, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to our newest Patreon patron, Melissa McPherson, who is supporting at the Branch level! I'm not much for New Year's resolutions, but I have a lot on my mind as we close out 2019. Highest on the list is this question: How do we participate fully in Reparational Genealogy? I've had a lot of people ask me that question, but until this moment, I think that my answers have been inadequate. Today I'm making my appeal for a practical means of participating in getting your enslavers' names out there for all researchers to find: blogging.

I'm not new in this request, nor with this idea. Plenty of people do this all the time, and it really helps family members to Google a name, find commonalities, and connect. I've never really discussed this on the podcast because I've certainly never done it, and I don't want to be a COMPLETE hypocrite!

Until now, my primary means of working with reparational issues has been by researching other people's trees, and my blog has been a place to publish my podcast. But as of 2020, in addition to podcast posts, I will be publishing information about my individual enslaving ancestors from my own tree, one per post, with complete documentation, images with citations (don't break copyright laws, my pumpkins!), keywords, categories, tags, and so forth. This way, I can get all of the data from my own tree and my own enslaving ancestors out onto the internet for all to use. I invite you all to be a part of the solution, and to do the same, in 2020.

The Family Cookbook - The USCIS Rule and the Post-Thanksgiving Recipes Dec 06, 2019
    Show notes

First, we welcome a new Patreon patron, Linda Sparks, and announce that the podcast is now available on Deezer! And of course, this episode is about food and carrying current or new traditions forward for future generations, but first, we have some business to take care of. Did you know that the Federal agency in charge of immigration records here in the United States is proposing a rule that would increase document search and delivery fees by up to 492%? Yeah, I was pretty horrified too. Fortunately, the rule proposal process includes a public comment period. That period only lasts through December 16, 2019, so we need to get on our bikes and ride, pumpkins! I'll discuss that briefly, provide resources for reading the rule and commenting, and then we'll talk turkey. And andouille cornbread dressing. And scallion mashed potatoes, orange-glazed sweet potatoes, white wine gravy, and pumpkin pie. So yeah, this is a well-rounded episode, I'd say.

My Interview on Genealogy Adventures Oct 17, 2019
    Show notes

Are you familiar with Genealogy Adventures? You should be. They are two cousins (both cousins of mine, actually) who interview different guests about different topics on a weekly basis. This is the audio of our Sunday, October 13th interview about Reparational Genealogy, and we had a lot of fun while having some serious discussions, as well. You can find them on Facebook at facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa, where this video is available and where the Facebook Live transmission was SUPPOSED to happen (FB Live had a little nervous breakdown). You can also find their broadcasts live weekly on Listen Vision Live, and stored on their YouTube channel at Genealogy Adventures Live. If you watch live, Sundays at 4pm Eastern, you can ask questions and leave comments. They're also available on Twitter at @genealogadvent, on Instagram @genealogyadventures, and their website is genealogyadventures.net. Donya and Brian are knowledgeable practitioners who are also open to teaching and learning new things - precisely the kind of people this world needs. And remember, Skelly Relly recordings are due on October 26th. Time is running out!

Naming Babies from Your Tree, aka Don't Make Your Baby Hate You Oct 08, 2019
    Show notes

Mormons, do you have nine 1st cousins, all of whom are named Brigham? Non-Mormons, are you considering Kayden, Jayden, Rayden and iPod as names for your next child? STOP THE MADNESS! Follow your family history pied piper and I will lead you to consider some better sources for baby names. Well, one better source: your own family history. Genealogy can help you to get to know your ancestors in so many ways, but none is more satisfying than naming a child for an ancestor, and then telling that ancestor's story when you tuck in your child at night. After all, genealogy may be about precision and research, but to what end? To have a family to discuss, and roots from which to grow. Listen in and we'll talk about some scary current naming trends, and how using your ancestral naming forms, not to mention place names where your family once lived, can provide rich resources for ancestral appreciation in current and future generations.

The Family Cookbook - My Saucy Grandma Sep 25, 2019
    Show notes

My mother's mother, Ga, was a quiet, staid woman. She was peaceful, smiling, a model DAR and Midwestern sorority sister. But underneath it all...she was SAUCY. In this episode, I'll give you some of my grandmother's "International" sauce recipes (because sauce was a staple on her dinner table), and the reasons why I think her self-written attempts at international cuisine reveal a bit about who she was and the time and place that produced her.

What If Ancestry Takes Out a Loan - Being Prepared Aug 16, 2019
    Show notes

Don't be alarmed, but I'm about to alarm you. A little. Well, I'm going to make you think a bit, anyway. Nothing will happen tomorrow, but it sounds like Ancestry's parent company, Permira Advisers LLP, is willing to take out a very risky loan in order to fund a move that would denude Ancestry of $900 million. Yikes. I learned this from an article in Bloomberg, which you can read for yourself and assess: Ancestry.com Owners Aim to Extract $900 Million Payout With Loan. I was fueled by concern and milk chocolate today, so I recorded this one without a script or a net! If I made errors in my ill-educated understandings or assumptions about markets, economics, finance or financial risk, feel free to contact me and I'll include POLITE comments in the next episode (don't be a Jeffrey, mmkay?). In this episode, I'll discuss what I think they're thinking, and what we should be considering and doing as genealogists, family historians and researchers to keep our work safe day to day.

So, have you been wondering where the heck I've been? In 2018 I was publishing weekly, yet I seem to have dropped off the podcasting Earth in 2019. I'm here to give you the reasons why, in hopes that we can hang together as I repair and resume work on the podcast.

Oh, and we have two brilliant cake recipes. One is from an Army wife friend of my grandmother's in the 1940s or 1950s, but the other is genuinely the oldest recipe I've been able to find in my family's trove.if you If you like apple cake or chocolate cake (or both), you are in the right place. Get ready to take notes, because these are fantastic recipes that you will not find elsewhere! And remember, if you want to have yours on the show, send them in to me, or contact me and you can come on the show to present them and the ancestors from whom they originate.
