FYW 148 : “Inclusive writing”: what is it and how does it work? Dec 06, 2017
    Show notes

Have you ever heard of inclusive writing? I hadn’t, until I recently listened to a debate about it from a French radio program and I immediately wanted to share the concept with you – it is most interesting to see how equality, feminism and more social issues are trying to leave their mark in language itself. How? By revolutionising French spelling and encouraging the choice of alternative words in order to avoid the predominance of the masculine form over the feminine! I’ll also give you my opinion about the proposed changes!

Vocabulary and Spelling of the French Words mentioned in this episode

Une, charpentière, une professeure, une pompière, une auteure / autrice
    Un ambassadeur, une ambassadrice
    Madame l’Ambassadrice vs Madame l’Ambassadeur
les candidates et les candidats à l’élection présidentielle
    les maçonnes et les maçons
    les décorateurs et décoratrices
    celles et ceux
    elles et ils

    ce·tte
    celui·elle
    certain·e
    différent·e
    du·de la
    locaux·ales
    banquier·ère·s
    travailleur·euse·s
    acteur·rice·s

«les maires et les mairesses sont satisfaites»
«les plombières et les plombiers sont occupés».
    «Je suis content·e»
