Tariffs, Tantrums, and the 41% Mystery Apr 11, 2025

This week on The Final Word, Frances and Angela unravel the tangled mess that is Trump’s tariff “strategy”—a term we use loosely, because “strategy” implies some semblance of planning. China, channeling Maya Angelou’s wisdom, has decided to believe Trump the first time and raised tariffs on all U.S. imports to a staggering 84%. It’s less “trade war” and more “trade apocalypse.”

Meanwhile, House Republicans continue their “kiss the ring” tour, blocking a Democratic attempt to force a vote on repealing Trump’s tariffs. Because apparently, loyalty to chaos is the new party platform.

But wait, there’s more! The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court for permission to fire two independent regulators without cause—because who needs checks and balances when you can have unchecked power? And, in a move that’s equal parts petty and alarming, they’ve also asked the Justice Department to open investigations into perceived enemies Miles Taylor and Chris Krebs. Democracy, we hardly knew you.

And somehow, despite all of this, Trump still boasts a 41% approval rating. Yes, really. We’re as baffled as you are.

WE ARE NOT BOO BOO THE FOOL Mar 28, 2025

First up, they tackle the jaw-dropping revelation that Trump’s national security officials, the Vice President, and others were casually discussing top-secret intelligence in an unsecured Signal group chat. Because apparently, safeguarding national security is just so last season.

Meanwhile, calls for the firing or resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and national security advisor Mike Waltz are echoing through Washington. Will accountability finally make a cameo appearance? Don’t hold your breath.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! The Supreme Court upheld federal regulations on ghost guns, and while we won’t spoil the surprise, let’s just say the dissenting justices were about as predictable as a Hallmark movie plot. And in a rare moment of political optimism, Democrats flipped a Pennsylvania seat in a special election—yes, in a district Trump won by 15 points. Could this be a sign that Democrats are eyeing wins in previously untouchable territories? Fingers crossed.

And finally, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to detain and deport a 21-year-old Columbia student and green card holder during a protest. Oh, and just to round things out, we learn that Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old member of Elon Musk’s DOGE team (who goes by “Big Balls,” because of course he does), once provided network support to a cybercrime group known for harassment and data theft. Because why not?
