Ramble Meets... Andy Brassell Jun 05, 2019
    Show notes

Andy Brassell is one of the world's most knowledgeable and entertaining pundits, whose passion for football has taken him all around the world when covering the game. He can be read regularly in the Guardian, and heard on talkSPORT, as well as The Football Ramble's sister shows On The Continent and At The Match.

Here, in the latest episode of Ramble Meets, he talks in-depth to Luke about his career path so far, including his journey into football punditry and how much he owes to Tim Vickery, what it's like being on friendly terms with Cristiano Ronaldo, and the most scared he's been when covering a game.

Golden Booty: Chelsea are on top in Europe, Aston Villa are back in the Premier League and the Champions League is on the horizon May 30, 2019
    Show notes

What a magical night in Baku! Goals! Empty seats! An atmosphere! Of sorts! Chelsea give Arsenal a gubbing to win the Europa League and make Maurizio Sarri’s season look pretty good indeed, as Eden Hazard and his turbo-booty give Arsenal another miserable night to forget.

After picking over this we take the time to congratulate Aston Villa on their promotion, rejoice at the prospect of a second season of Marcelo Bielsa and wonder if there could be a place for Alan Pardew to pick up where he left off in the sheikh-based Newcastle United revolution.

In the latest episode of Ramble Meets, Luke welcomes author, historian and broadcaster Jonathan Wilson into the studio to discuss a life and career spanning ten books, countless newspaper articles and editorship of a quarterly football periodical.

A graduate of Oxford University, Jonathan cut his teeth working for onefootball.com before writing his first book about Eastern European football, called Behind The Curtain. Books about football tactics, Brian Clough, and Argentinian football have followed, and this year Jonathan's tenth work, The Barcelona Legacy, hit the shelves.

In this revealing interview, Jonathan talks candidly about his career, his upbringing in the north east, and explains why Louis van Gaal will always be a terrifying man.

Sheikh bake: Play-off drama, a Man United nostalgia-fest and a potential takeover at Newcastle May 27, 2019
    Show notes

Could Mike Ashley finally be about to sell Newcastle United? Rumours suggest it may be the case, but one of our number isn’t so sure. Where other rumours are concerned, Man United get all Moby as their class of ’99 turn it on at Old Trafford, and there are whisperings of a return to football for Big Weng.

Poor old Sunderland suffer yet more heartache after another Wembley loss, while Charlton, Mike Dean’s Tranmere and Celtic are in dreamland. There’s also a look ahead to the Europa League final and a special mention for one Chris Wondolowski.

Shearer’s Jag: Transfers, play-off finals and Europa League gripes May 23, 2019
    Show notes

There’s barely any football happening but we don’t even care, there’s still room to talk about possible double agent Petr Cech, Rushin’ Ray Parlour and the hugely exciting prospect of Mike Dean stealing the show from the Wembley stands as his beloved Tranmere take on Newport County.

We also discuss the possibility of selling Ed Woodward a horse, Sunderland’s Roman inspiration and Marcus fronting up to a notorious criminal organisation.

I heart Hearts: Man City secure the quadruple, Kompany bows out and Wolves make Europe May 20, 2019
    Show notes

As the dust and ticker tape settles on the domestic season it’s Man City that have won it all. A comprehensive gubbing of Watford leaves us equal parts impressed and terrified for the future, though it turns out that Newcastle United have also won some silverware this season, if you’re a bit sloppy with the details, which clearly we are.

Peering around the rest of the game we discover that the guy with the bell is no longer the worst Portsmouth fan, that Tony Pulis’ usefulness has come to an end at Middlesbrough and that Cardiff Metropolitan University FC are a name to look out for in Europe next season.
