    Episode 10: Community Mobility Nov 28, 2016
    Show notes

After reading this week’s posted content and listening to this week’s episode of the Fly on the Wall Project, carefully consider the following questions and choose one to answer in its entirety.

Each question may be answered by only 3 students. It is your responsibility to check all posts and select a question which has not already been answered by 3 of your peers. Please include the number of the question you are answering in the subject line of your post so the rest of the class may easily identify which questions have been answered.

Remember, you must have reviewed the week’s content in order to adequately participate in the Discussion Forum. In your post, incorporate the content into your response where applicable, and consider the principles of the Community Support System (CSS) model (e.g. flexibility; special needs, such as jail diversion; accountability; coordination) and the functions of Case Management (i.e. assessment, planning, linking, monitoring, evaluating) when posting your response.

Your initial response is due by end of the day Thursday 12/1/16.

Comments to at least two of your classmates due by end of the day Sunday 12/4/16.

    1. George would like to be able to visit his new friend Kimberly. Besides using the bus, name two community resources he might be able to use to meet with her. In lieu of resources for recreational transportation, what other options would you suggest for them?
    2. Bianca will now need to commute every day to a large city for her job. What resources might be available for her to save money on her commute? What would you suggest in terms of making the commute as easy on Bianca as possible while she is pregnant?
    3. For Mick, what types of resources/suggestions would you recommend to him to access his support group at the church? Name 2 of them.
    4. Give your thoughts on the conclusion of Michela’s story. What, if anything, could been done differently that would have led to a more positive outcome? What follow up, if any, should Derek provide in the next week following this meeting with her?

This is the conclusion of the FOTW audio series. Derek and LueAnn would like to thank the following faculty guest stars:

    Brittany Stone – Michela

    Anthony Zazzarino – George

    Kenneth Kinter – Mick

    Jennifer George – Bianca

    Catherine Colucci – Derek/LueAnn Supervisor

Please review instructions for the final FOTW project, found at the top of the main Moodle page of the course.

    1. Talk about Derek’s approach to helping George with his complaints related to psychiatric medication side effects during the course of their meeting. What did he do well? What’s one thing Derek could have done better to resolve the situation in a way that would be agreeable to George?
    2. Lots of times people have trouble remembering the details of their medical appointments. What are two suggestions that Derek could make to George to better help him with attending to doctor appointments in the future, so that they won’t have to spend time reaching out after the appointment to get the information?
    3. How would you proceed with assisting Mick address his current problems regarding his complaint of chest pains? How would you communicate with him to try to ascertain possible symptoms, as well as his concerns? Do you think he should communicate with his psychiatrist rather than, or in addition to, a medical doctor about this condition?
    4. How, if at all, would you involve Bianca in Mick’s treatment? How might her issue with traditional forms of treatment affect Mick’s health, if at all? What would you suggest Bianca do about her own health and wellness? Explain.
    5. Why is it important to work closely with other staff members when it comes to locating and accessing community resources and linking folks to them? Give your thoughts on Derek/Lue Ann’s working relationship and the way they make use of their team meetings. How is something as concrete as community resource management related to the therapeutic relationship between staff and service recipients?
