Episdoe 22: Atlanta United 3-1 Philadelphia Union Jun 04, 2018
    Show notes

An historic Josef Martinez hat trick and two early Philadelphia Union red cards powered Atlanta United to their first home win in three games as the Five Stripes stayed atop the Supporters’ Shield standings with a 3-1 win Saturday night in Atlanta. The beginning of the game looked like we were preparing to settle in for just another nice, normal soccer match in good old Atlanta, Georgia before THE ENTIRE GOT DANG THING EXPLODED. 19-year-old center back Auston Trusty took down Martinez in the box and the Five Stripes were awarded a penalty, a moment that in most cases would merely change the game. Instead, it unraveled it entirely. Captain (!) Alejandro Bedoya and Haris Medunjanin both picked up two yellow cards for...whatever the heck happened there. “I was scared s***less,” Martinez said after the game. Despite being frightened to the point of voiding his bowels, Josef stepped up to make it 1-0 lead over a nine-man team. Atlanta immediately switched from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3, but despite the attacking minded tactics, the Five Stripes couldn’t find the net against Philadelphia keeper Andre Blake. Atlanta ended the half with 14 shots and just one goal, struggling to create chances in quality positions. Four minutes into the second half, the Five Stripes found a chance in a quality position. Fortunately, Atlanta United controlled the game going forward. After another barrage of shots that failed to find the back of the net, the Five Stipes finally caught a break in the 83rd minute. A Union handball sent Josef to the spot again, this time sitting on a hat-trick. The hat trick ties Josef with Stern John and Diego Serna for the MLS record in career hat tricks with five. It took Martinez 34 games to reach the mark, 21 games less than John. “First of all, I’m just happy that the team was able to get the victory tonight, that’s the most important thing. It had been a couple of games since we won at home,” Martinez said through a translator. “Obviously when you’re able to score goals you’re happy to help the team so it’s time to enjoy the moment and then move on and get ready for the next game.” Martinez seemed quick to pass attention elsewhere, but his manager appeared to be impressed by the striker’s accomplishment. “I think 11 versus nine for that long of a stretch, it was logical that he would find some spaces and find some goals. It’s good for him that he’s tied the record and now the next step is to break the record,” Tata Martino said through a translator. “I don’t know all the exact statistics about his hat tricks and how he’s scored them but you have to score goals and that’s what he did. I’m not going to take any credit away from him [due to #GameState] for scoring that many hat tricks in only a year and a half in the league.” By the time the final whistle blew, Atlanta had outshout Philadelphia 31 to five, with 10 shots on target compared to just one for the Union. Even still, Martino didn’t leave a glowing review for his side. “I don’t think we played well. We didn’t play well 11 on 11 and we didn’t play very well 11 versus nine,” Martino said. “I never worry about missed chances. I just think that’s something you work on. That’s never a motive of worry for me. What can be a reason to worry is when a team is up two players and they’re not moving the ball from side-to-side, they’re not circulating it, they’re not taking advantage of the space that they have. I think that tonight at times we may have been trying to do things a little too individually rather than collectively.” Atlanta returns to action on Wednesday in Kennesaw for a U.S. Open Cup meeting with Charleston. The MLS edition of the Five Stripes heads to the Bronx for a huge matchup with second place NYCFC on Saturday afternoon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Episdoe 20: New England Revolution 1-1 Atlanta United May 31, 2018
    Show notes

Josef Martinez gave Atlanta United an early lead, but missed opportunities and a late penalty allowed New England to walk away with a point in an infuriating 1-1 draw on Wednesday night in Foxborough. Martinez gave the Five Stripes the lead with their first shot on target. A trickling Julian Gressel cross meandered past three Revolution players in the box and to the feet of Martinez who finished with ease. The half ended with its lone clear chance as the difference. Fortunately, plenty of clear chances were on the way from the Five Stripes. Unfortunately, WE DIDN’T FINISH A GOT DANG ONE. Atlanta dominated the half, creating chance after chance after chance on the break. After a hodgepodge of shots directly at the keeper and other missed opportunities, you began to wonder when the missed chances would allow New England back into the game. Cool. Atlanta United ended the night with seven shots on target and an expected goals total of about ten or so (probably) but couldn’t push past the Revolution. “That’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes,” Jeff Larentowicz said post game. After dropping two extremely frustrating points, the Five Stripes now have to regroup to face a streaking Philadelphia Union team (no, seriously) this Saturday in Atlanta. *sigh* Walk this one off, y’all. Walk it off. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Episdoe 19: Atlanta United 1-3 New York Red Bulls May 21, 2018
    Show notes

Atlanta United dropped another home result to the New York Red Bulls, 3-1. Ezequiel Barco had the hosts flying high with an opening goal and Josef Martinez looked to have made it 2-0. However, things changed when VAR overturned the second goal. From then on, the Red Bulls bullied Atlanta thanks to some help from the refs. Episdoe 17: Atlanta United 2-1 Orlando City May 14, 2018
    Show notes

Atlanta United quickly rebounded from their midweek loss against Sporting Kansas City by defeating Orlando City 2-1 Sunday night in the Sunshine State(it was raining during the match, but whatever). It didn’t take very long for Atlanta to find the back of the net, as they took an early 1-0 lead after Greg Garza drew a penalty and was pulled down in the box by Cristian Higuita. Josef Martinez stepped up to take it and converted in the 10th minute after his feint run-up caught Joe Bendik guessing the wrong way. The goal was Martinez’s eighth of the season. Things got even better for the Five Stripes, as Greg Garza’s cross into the box found Ezequiel Barco, whose shot kissed the bottom of the crossbar and found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Alec Kann, who was returning from a knee injury and had yet to play for Atlanta this season, stepped up big in the absence of suspended Brad Guzan with his only save of the first half coming in the 44th minute. The good guys went into the break with a 2-0 lead. Kann was called upon once again early in the second half, as Justin Meram’s left-footed attempt from the near post in the 52nd minute led to the Decatur native’s second important save of the match. However, a bit of misfortune led to Orlando City’s first goal of the night, as Kann saved Will Johnson’s initial shot in the 57th minute, but a combination of his inability to punch the ball out of the box and Miles Robinson’s missed attempt to clear it led to an easy finish for Meram. Tito Villalba nearly restored the two-goal lead in the 77th minute, but Bendik saved his shot on the 1-on-1 opportunity. At the end of the day, the two goals were all Atlanta needed to win a massive Eastern Conference matchup. Overall, it was impressive to see the team continue to find ways to get three points on the road, as AU’s winning streak away from home now extends to four. Atlanta’s next challenge comes Sunday, May 20 against the New York Red Bulls at 7 p.m. in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Episdoe 16: Atlanta United 0-2 Sporting Kansas City May 10, 2018
    Show notes

A 30th minute red card sent Atlanta United down to ten men and Sporting Kansas City outscored the short-sided Five Stripes squad to come away with a 2-0 road win on Wednesday night in a matchup between the Eastern and Western Conference leaders. It appeared as if Atlanta United had taken the lead inside the first five minutes but a Josef Martinez goal was negated by our friends in the VAR lair who deemed him offside in the most polarizing decision of the night.
