#373 PGI Particulate Protection & Decontamination Seminar with Joe Taylor of Dewipe May 16, 2025
    Show notes

Final episode in our PGI Particulate Protection & Decontamination Seminar Series. So far, we've heard powerful stories from families, survivors, and advocates within the firefighting community. Today, we shift focus to innovation and action.

Joining me is Jo Taylor MBE, founder of De-Wipe—a company dedicated to developing scientifically backed decontamination solutions that help reduce the risk of occupational cancer among firefighters. Jo brings a unique perspective: one that bridges scientific insight, product innovation, and a deep commitment to firefighter health.

In this conversation, we explore how simple, effective post-incident routines—like proper skin decontamination—can make a life-saving difference. We also discuss Jo’s journey, her mission, and how De-Wipe is helping change the culture around contamination control in the fire service.

Brought to you with the support of PGI — leaders in high-performance protective gear — this series aims to educate, inspire, and drive change. Because protecting those who protect others isn’t optional — it’s essential.

    Let’s dive in.

In today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr. Dan Dworkis — emergency physician, Chief Medical Officer at the Mission Critical Team Institute, and founder of The Emergency Mind Project — for a powerful conversation on how mission-critical teams like firefighters and first responders can perform under pressure, recover effectively, and grow with intention. #370 Honouring Martin Green: A Family's Story with Latitia & Evan Green - PGI Particulate Protection & Decontamination Seminar 3 of 6 May 05, 2025
    Show notes

Honouring Martin Green: A Family's Story - Welcome to this special episode in our six-part mini-series on firefighter cancer, protection, and decontamination — brought to you with the support of PGI, leaders in high-performance protective gear for those who serve on the front line.

Today’s conversation is one that hits straight to the heart. We’re honoured to share the story of Martin Green — a firefighter with over 30 years of service, a respected professional, a devoted husband, and a loving father. Martin tragically lost his life to cancer, a disease that continues to take far too many from our fire family. In this episode, I sit down with his wife Latitia and their son Evan to talk about the man behind the badge — and the journey they’ve walked since his diagnosis and passing.

This isn’t an easy listen, but it’s an essential one. Latesha and Evan speak with courage, grace, and honesty about the cost of service, the reality of occupational cancer, and the ripple effects it has on families and communities. Their story brings a deeply personal dimension to the conversations we’ve been having throughout this series — reminding us that behind every statistic is a life, a legacy, and people left behind.

If you’re a firefighter, a leader in the fire sector, or simply someone who cares about protecting those who protect others — this episode is a powerful call to action. It’s about raising awareness, driving cultural change, and making sure no firefighter family has to walk this path alone again.

This one’s for Martin — and for every firefighter we’ve lost too soon.

    Let’s get into it.

#367 Herding sheep & Finding your Natural Leadership sweet spot with Stu Jackson Apr 28, 2025
    Show notes

Today I’m joined by Stuart Jackson — founder of ICE and a true force when it comes to human-centred leadership and cultural transformation. Stuart’s spent decades helping people, teams, and organisations unlock their potential, working across everything from the NHS to UK fire and rescue services. In this episode, we dive into what leadership really looks like in today’s world — the messy, emotional, deeply human kind. We talk about the power of gut instinct, emotional intelligence, and even what animals (yep, animals!) can teach us about leading others. Spoiler: it’s a lot.

This conversation is packed with golden nuggets for anyone on their leadership journey. Stuart and I explore the importance of vulnerability, the trap of toxic masculinity, and why clarity, compassion, and great listening matter more than ever. We touch on frameworks for handling tough conversations, the need to create safe, open spaces for teams, and why embracing imperfection might just be your leadership superpower. If you're ready to lead with more courage, authenticity, and heart — this one’s for you.

#366 Ben Selby Fire Brigades Union Assistant General Secretary FBU Apr 21, 2025
    Show notes

When Ben Selby joined me on The Firefighters Podcast, we had a wide-ranging and powerful conversation about the vital role of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the evolving challenges faced by fire and rescue services in the UK. As the FBU’s Assistant General Secretary, Ben offered deep insight into issues like firefighter pay, recruitment, and the shifting demands of the job. We explored the importance of the Grey Book, the direction of a College of Fire, and the complexity of current duty systems. Ben also spoke candidly about the cultural dynamics within the service, the push for greater inclusivity and diversity, and the union’s work through campaigns like Fight for 52, which aims to improve maternity provisions for firefighters. Our discussion highlighted the growing risks of climate change, including wildfires, and reinforced the urgent need to support mental health, modernise working practices, and ensure firefighter safety and well-being in a rapidly changing world.

#365 Leadership, People & Unseen Privilege with Abi Manifold Apr 14, 2025
    Show notes

Abi Manifold has over 25 years of experience in Learning and Organisational Development, Abi’s approach to leadership, culture, and performance is deeply rooted in empathy, authenticity, and the practical application of human insight. Her diverse background as an executive coach, psychometric profiler, and leadership facilitator gives her a rare ability to blend strategic thinking with meaningful, people-first practices. Throughout our discussion, Abi emphasized the importance of not just what people do, but how they do it—and most importantly, how it makes them feel.

One of the key themes for me was how Abi highlighted that while many organizations want to do better in these spaces of leadership and cultivating a workforce that want to actually come into work and enjoy being art of something meaningful, organisations often overlook the most obvious source of insight on culture which is the experiences of their own people.
