38: The Return, Part 8
Jun 26, 2017
Jake Fogelnest returns to discuss the most substantial, "Lynchian" episode yet, coming just before Twin Peaks goes on a two-week break before the final ten episodes start airing. Does this episode deserve the "one of the great episodes in TV history" praise that Jeremy and others gave it the night it aired? Are the questions it opens up more fascinating than the ones it does/doesn't answer?
Does it convince us that we all really need a serious Transcendental Meditation practice?
Jake Fogelnest previously appeared on Episode 2 of Fire Talk With Me. He was our first guest, and is therefore better than the rest.
Covered here: Episode 37 (38 including The Pilot, or S03E08)
37: The Return, Part 7
Jun 22, 2017
Allie and Jeremy are joined by the one and only FilmCritHULK to discuss the continuing dividends paid from watching the original series as well as Fire Walk With Me, new micro-mysteries revealed as we continue on through season three, and the revelation of how "Lynchian cops" differ from many in modern media (and potentially real life?).
On social media, send us your guesses as to where you think the next episode will begin.

35: The Return, Part 5

Allie and Jeremy are joined by screenwriter BenDavid Grabinski to discuss the dreamlike effect of watching the new season, a very put-upon Dougie, and another delightful dose of Brett Gelman. BenDavid also creates a team of Fire Talk With Me interns out of thin air.
Covered here: Episode 34 (35 including The Pilot, or S03E05)
34: The Return, Part 4

33: The Return, Part 3
May 30, 2017

Covered here: Episode 32 (33 including The Pilot, or S03E03)
Fire Talk With Me will return this Thursday with coverage of The Return, Part 4.
32: The Return, Parts 1 & 2
May 22, 2017
Allie and Jeremy have both just seen a new episode of Twin Peaks together for the very first time! A lot changes in 25 years, but in Twin Peaks, it's fascinating what stays the same. Spoilers start quickly (there is a warning) as we revisit Allie's early hypotheses about split timelines and realities, her demand that her Cooper/Audrey thirst be validated, and most importantly...the coffee and donut situation in the 2017 of Twin Peaks.
Covered here: Episodes 30 & 31 (31 & 32 including The Pilot, or S03E01 and S03E02)
Fire Talk With Me will return very soon with coverage of The Return, Parts 3 & 4.
After 2 years instead of 25, Allie and Jeremy return to discuss Fire Walk With Me. They reflect on the podcast's journey so far, the unconventional choices made regarding the focus of the Twin Peaks feature film, and the texture it adds to the series.
Does anyone watch this movie without watching the original series?
Fire Talk With Me has returned, and will be back in time for Season 3.
Dana Gould joins Allie and Jeremy to discuss the final episode of what we can now call the original series of Twin Peaks. Allie reflects upon her predictions throughout the podcast, Dana contextualizes the events of the finale to its original airing, and boy are we glad we didn't do this when the fate of Season 3 was still up in the air.
Covered here: Episode 29 (30 including The Pilot, or S02E22)
Fire Talk With Me will return, and...more than likely do so in less than 25 years.
The George Clooney book that Dana busts Jeremy's balls over (and which is most certainly real, Jeremy promises) is not yet available for pre-order, but it should be out this year! Rest assured that "George Clooney Jeremy Smith", entered in the Search Engine of your choice, should exclusively direct you toward it once it is available for purchase.
Special 3: Creature Features (Ray Wise)
Apr 16, 2015
The incomparable Ray Wise is a fan of monsters in the movies, and has played his own share of them...including Leland Palmer. Last August, Fire Talk With Me producer (and Electric Shadow host) Moisés got a few precious minutes with Ray to talk about Twin Peaks, Swamp Thing, and the roles he still hungers to play.
As a bonus, hear Ray record the show intro you now know so well...and in a single take.
Scheduling our very special guest for the podcast covering the final episode of the TV show has proven tricky. We were going to hold this interview for later, but here it is to tide you over until we have a new, "proper" episode.
Brad Dukes wrote Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks (which any fan of this podcast should get), so he's the most ideal guest we could hope for as we close in on the very end of the (original run) of the show, and especially for this particular episode.
Covered here: Episode 28 (29 including The Pilot, or S02E21)
28: The Path to the Black Lodge (Jeff Mahler)
Mar 19, 2015
Filmmaker Jeff Mahler has a Twin Peaks origin story that mirrors part of our show concept in a wonderful way. In this episode, learn how evocative a styrofoam cup can really be.
Covered here: Episode 27 (28 including The Pilot, or S02E20)
Jeremy has a piece on Steven Soderbergh in this week's New York Magazine. Go get it.
26: On the Wings of Love (Todd Gilchrist)
Feb 24, 2015
Critic and not-Allison Todd Gilchrist joins Jeremy to talk about the episode where Twin Peaks turns things back around, restoring the faith of fans in a single episode.
Covered here: Episode 25 (26 including The Pilot, or S02E18)
Writer/producer/man of many hats Jeff Katz joins Allie & Jeremy to talk about how Twin Peaks is the reason that modern TV shows we think are great have the license to be so in the first place.
Cameo by Billy Zane. No, seriously...sort of.
Covered here: Episode 24 (25 including The Pilot, or S02E17)
Show Notes and Links
Jeff Katz is on Twitter, but he hasn't posted since 2012.
Matt Oswalt watched every episode with his parents and brother when he was young. This explains so much. Here, we cover the episode directed by Diane Keaton, and Allie reveals what is sure to be one of her most controversial opinions...with regard to corn-based snacks.
overed here: Episode 22 (23 including The Pilot, or S02E15)
Show Notes and Links
Matt Oswalt is on Twitter, and is the genius behind PUDDIN'
We also launch our second contest, where you are challenged to illustrate how you imagine "Owllie" looks. There is no prize other than internet fame.
22: Double Play (Damon Houx)
Jan 20, 2015
Film critic and writer Damon Houx is finally rewarded for making himself scarce for the podcast’s entire run until now. Your reward is that Allie watched a David Lynch movie in addition to this episode, and she reveals more about her Lynchian music-making plans.
Crack open a Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Episode 21 (22 including The Pilot, or S02E14).
Show Notes and Links
Damon Houx is on Twitter, has written for a swath of sites including Screen Crush among others, and did some of the best film writing of the era as Andre Dellamorte on CHUD
Damon mentions that he thinks Straight Story evokes a director named "Ozu". He means Yasujirō Ozu.
Moisés, who produces Fire Talk With Me and runs ESN, started a comprehensive retrospective series geared toward people who don't know Ozu called Cinema Ozu in 2010, which he revised and restarted in 2012 as Discovering Ozu.
In 2015, Ozu is getting some dedicated airtime on ESN. Listen to Criterion Collected for more soon.
21: Checkmate (Noah Segan)
Jan 13, 2015
Actor/raconteur/bon-vivant Noah Segan joins Allie and Jeremy to talk about an episode that he has not seen in many years. In the same way that Episode 20 opens in a semi-surreal dreamscape, the format you know and love is thrown entirely out the window in this back-from-hiatus episode of the show.
Episode 20 (21 including The Pilot, or S02E13).
Show Notes and Links
Noah Segan is on Twitter, and knows an inordinate amount about the enormous situation between David Duchovny's legs.
If you've not seen Brick or Looper, we're officially ashamed of you.
Writer/comedian Julia Prescott almost joins the show as a regular co-host, pushing either Allie or Jeremy out in a dramatic ouster (or not, or does she?)! Find out who dies so that she can reign supreme! Also: can/should we accept the transition to Tame Flannel Cooper?
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 19 (20 including The Pilot, or S02E12).
Alex Hirsch created Disney XD's Gravity Falls, which does not owe its origins to Twin Peaks, despite what you might assume! He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss filler, and how to do it without boring an audience.
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 18 (19 including The Pilot, or S02E11).
18: Dispute Between Brothers (DC Pierson)
Nov 26, 2014
DC Pierson is an author, actor, and, in a first for one of our guests, just-as new to Twin Peaks as Allie! He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss the first episode to come after another landmark moment in the series.
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 17 (18 including The Pilot, or S02E10).
If you haven't seen Mystery Team yet, guess what? You have something to do before you see any other movie.
17: Arbitrary Law (Emily V. Gordon)
Nov 18, 2014
Emily V. Gordon is a producer (The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail), podcaster, and a former family therapist, which makes her a damn fine guest at this point in the show. She joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss one of the more satisfying episodes in a while (along with the big reveal episode).
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 16 (17 including The Pilot, or S02E09).
Speaking of, The Indoor Kids (twitter) is one of the best video game podcasts out there, owing to Emily and her handsome husband Kumail Nanjiani keeping things both fun and funny. Before you think Kumail is just some pretty face, he has a brain too, guys.
16: Drive With a Dead Girl (Jay Bushman)
Nov 11, 2014
Jay Bushman is a writer, producer, director, and a true student of television as it bleeds into the transmedia age. He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss the troubling "backgrounding" of Cooper, feeling the filler, and the uphill struggle after the reveal of who killed Laura Palmer.
Save us, Shirtless Cooper.
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 15 (16 including The Pilot, or S02E08).
Show Notes and Links
Jay Bushman (twitter, website, IMDb) embraces transmedia. Embrace him, please.
Have you watched The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? Wait, what? Seriously? Oh, come on, what are you doing that's more important watching Too Many Cooks for the 18th time? It's awesome. You dug through Laura Palmer's, so go dig around in Lizzie Bennet's Diary.
15: Lonely Souls (BenDavid Grabinski)
Nov 04, 2014
BenDavid Grabinski is a writer, director, and one of the best people you can discuss the Fast and the Furious franchise with, bar none. He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss the biggest reveal of the show thus far. A "Special Guest Star" from Twin Peaks makes a cameo, so stick with us to the very end of this week's show.
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 14 (15 including The Pilot, or S02E07).
Special 2: Writing of a Mystery (Josh Weinstein)
Oct 30, 2014
Josh Weinstein was a writer on The Simpsons during what many consider the show's Golden Age. He joins Allie and Jeremy to discuss Twin Peaks as well as how it influenced Simpsons classic cliffhanger "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
If you are a fan of The Simpsons at all (not even necessarily a die-hard), this episode might make your brain explode in joy.
WARNING: Contains spoilers for "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", including the name of the shooter.
A couple of recording breaks can be heard in the recording due to noise interrupting our intrepid trio, but thankfully, zero content was lost.
Yes, Gravity Falls is made to be kid-friendly, but the writing and world they've built is better than 90% of TV made for adults. Full episodes are posted on the official site.
Who Shot Mr. Burns? was comprised of the season 6 finale episode of The Simpsons and the season 7 premiere.
SCTV got everything right down to the smallest details. At used prices, the DVDs are a steal, and essential in the library of anyone who really loves and appreciates comedy writing.
14: Demons (Russ Fischer)
Oct 29, 2014
Russ Fischer writes for Slashfilm, and has known Jeremy since "The CHUD Days." He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss the good notes of Twin Peaks season 2, being on the fence about the 2016 return of Twin Peaks, and the out-of-print and hard-to-find Autobiography of Dale Cooper.
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 13 (14 including The Pilot, or S02E06).
Program Note:
The beginning of the second segment of the show (after the introduction of Russ) sounds abrupt: as if the result of an error in editing. It is abrupt, but not the result of anything other than tech issues outside our control eating a few minutes of audio. Those minutes are sadly lost, never to be heard again. Allison and Jeremy picked the discussion up in a way that still makes sense, but that sounds odd based on previous episodes.
In retropsect, this whole show should have been recorded on good old reel-to-reel tape.
Jensen Karp is a podcaster and the proprietor of Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss how LOST (and other shows) fell apart, the 2016 return of Twin Peaks, and the unpredictability of what would've been a 90's "season 3".
In this podcast, the gang discusses Episode 12 (13 including The Pilot, or S02E05).
Ben Blacker is a writer who created both the Nerdist Writers Panel and (co-created) The Thrilling Adventure Hour. He joins Allison and Jeremy to discuss how ahead of its time the show was and how dated Twin Peaks feels in retrospect.
The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer remains a point of contention as the group discusses Episode 11 (12 including The Pilot, or S02E04).
Show Notes and Links
Ben Blacker (twitter) does so much that he must travel through time and space to get his work done, from Nerdist Writers Panel and The Thrilling Adventure Hour to writing piles of comics (like Thunderbolts for Marvel) and TV series (like Supernatural).
Todd Holland directed The Wizard, which stars Fred Savage and Jenny Lewis (and which turns 25 this year!). He co-created Wonderfalls and directed loads of other TV in addition to this episode of Twin Peaks.
11: The Man Behind Glass (Joseph Scrimshaw)
Oct 07, 2014
Joseph Scrimshaw is a comedian, podcaster, and was an obsessive as-it-originally-aired Twin Peaks watcher in his teens. He had a Twin Peaks dream. No, really.
Joseph, Allie, and Jeremy delve into a terrific "Albert episode" in episode 10 (11 including the pilot) of Twin Peaks (S02E03).
Nightmare Watch: Allie has had "at least" four nightmares since watching the previous episode.
10: Coma (Aaron Ginsburg)
Sep 30, 2014
Aaron Ginsburg (writer/producer of The 100, director of The Thrilling Adventure Hour) is one of the great pizza chefs of Los Angeles. He joins Jeremy and Allison to discuss visions of terror, sabotage, the troubling nature of Cheers, potential surreality, and how things begin to shift starting with Twin Peaks Episode 9 (10 including The Pilot, or S02E02).
The Good Guys was a really, really good show, and should have ran for 20 years.
Clone is one of the best comics that Image Comics (or anyone, for that matter) is publishing (ComiXology, first volume TPB). Aaron joined the book starting at the beginning of the second arc in #6. A guy finds out an army of clones of him exists. Things happen. It's great.
A great Comic Book Resources interview with Ginsburg, Wade McIntyre, and David Schulner that took place as the second arc (Ginsburg's start on the series) began.
9: May the Giant Be with You (Scott Aukerman)
Sep 23, 2014
Scott Aukerman is the man behind great TV and web shows including Comedy Bang! Bang! and Between Two Ferns, as well as a bunch of great podcasts at Earwolf. He's also a huge Twin Peaks fan. He joins Jeremy and Allison to dig into the second season premiere, Episode 8 (9 including The Pilot).
Show Notes and Links
Comedy Bang! Bang! is a TV show. It's also a podcast that "Womp[s] it up" at least once a year.
Scott also cofounded Midroll, which sells their ads as well as many other shows, including Marc Maron's WTF and Doug Benson's Doug Loves Movies.
The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer (written by Jennifer Lynch) came out after the end of season 1 and before season 2 premiered. You don't have to have read it to get into season 2, but it certainly might enrich your experience. Scott thinks it's best to hold off until after you're done watching the show.
Special 1: Twin Peaks Comedy Tour (Brock Wilbur)
Sep 18, 2014
Comedian Brock Wilbur details his Twin Peaks Comedy Tour, which took him to original shooting locations for the iconic show. Look for more Specials posting on Thursdays throughout the rest of Fire Talk With Me's run.
James Urbaniak has played a host of memorable characters including Dr. Venture, Robert Crumb, Dick Cavett...and even Dale Cooper. He joins Jeremy and Allison to discuss the deep weirdness of a show about "simple pleasures and small towns", as well as Twin Peaks' first season finale, Episode 7 (8 including The Pilot). No spoilers, but: it's a cliffhanger deluxe.
If not already aware of the amazing work of Laika (Coraline, ParaNorman), The Boxtrolls (which features James among its cast) might just be a great introduction. Watch the trailer and go see it in U.S. theaters starting in September 2014.
Having not seen the final installment, rest assured that the Henry Fool Trilogy is the greatest trilogy to be told over 20 years spread across three decades in cinematic history (1997-2006-2014). Its completion alone is a reason not to hate Kickstarter.
James Urbaniak can be seen in all three movies: Henry Fool, Fay Grim, and the coming-soon Ned Rifle, which just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Below, a bonus, spoiler-free still frame of Coop and a lady.
7: Realization Time (Amber Benson)
Sep 09, 2014
Amber Benson (filmmaker, author, actress, and heartbreaker) joins Jeremy and Allison to discuss what makes a series like Twin Peaks or Buffy The Vampire Slayer create its own subculture, as well as Episode 6 (7 including The Pilot) of Twin Peaks.
Show Notes and Links
Amber Benson is on Twitter and Tumblr. Be nice and not creepy, for once in your life.
At the time of this recording, Amber's newest novel, The Witches of Echo Park, is available for pre-order. Get it from Amazon...or maybe try an actual store with books in it where humans go.
Amber co-directed Drones (2010). There are a bunch of talented people in it, Thrilling Adventure Hour "Bens" Acker and Blacker wrote it, and it's a workplace comedy mixed with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. You have time. You saw a Transformers movie at some point, right? Ok then.
6: Birds Are Watching (Eva Anderson)
Sep 02, 2014
Eva Anderson (writer from You're the Worst on FX, Comedy Bang! Bang! on IFC) spent part of her time growing up in the area where Twin Peaks was shot. She joins Jeremy and Allison to crush their illusions about the town and discuss Episode 5 (6 including the pilot) of Twin Peaks.
5: Dominoes in Your Mouth (Matt Robinson)
Aug 26, 2014
Matt Robinson (writer, director, and podcaster extraordinaire) discusses his following Twin Peaks since original airing, including his admiration for fanzine Wrapped In Plastic. Examined here: episode 5 (the 4 after The Pilot) of Twin Peaks.
From 1992-2005,Wrapped In Plastic was one of the most finely-produced and beloved fanzines in fanzine history.
SPOILERS FOR NEW VIEWERS: Produced in Arlington, Texas by Craig Miller and John Thorne, back issues are extremely hard to come by online. Texas Monthly wrote about it back in 1999.
Drew McWeeny (chief film critic at HitFix) discusses his first-person experience with David Lynch (and, in a shocking twist, Mädchen Amick!), as well as his hunger to return for Fire Walk With Me. Examined here: episode 4 (3rd after The Pilot) of Twin Peaks.
Sleepwalkers means something more to Drew than it does to anyone else on the planet.
Are you Jake Destree? Send Jeremy an email as he mentions in the show.
3: Getting Weird Again (Devin Faraci)
Aug 12, 2014
Devin Faraci (Badass-in-Chief at Badass Digest) discusses his distant and less-distant memories of watching Twin Peaks in first-run, as well as its legacy. Then, they examine Episode 2 (3 including The Pilot) of Twin Peaks, which features your new best friend here.
2: Fan Fiction I'm Writing (Jake Fogelnest)
Aug 06, 2014
Jake Fogelnest (writer, comedian, and our first-ever, second-ever guest) discusses "episode 1" of Twin Peaks, which is actually the second episode of Twin Peaks.
Show Notes and Links
Jake Fogelnest can be found on Twitter and making mischief at Funny or Die and, (not as often of late) Earwolf, home of world-changing podcasts that will either stave off or cause the actual end of days.
Though the episode discussed here is the second episode of Twin Peaks aired, it has always been classified as "Episode 1", with the pilot simply called "The Pilot", since the episodes were only officially titled with episode numbers. Numbers like "Pilot" when they mean "1", and "1", when they really mean "2".
Completely unintentionally and yet appropriate, considering the above, Jake is technically both the first and at once not actually the first guest on the show, since Charlie de Lauzirika is the "Pilot" to Jake's "Episode 1".
1: Watch Your Ceiling Fans (The Pilot)
Jul 30, 2014
Jeremy and Allison discuss the feature-length pilot for Twin Peaks.
Show Notes and Links
The Complete Mystery (including The Missing Pieces and other brand-new extra features) is now available, with remastered picture and sound direct from the 16mm negative. Kimmy Robertson (Lucy Moran) unboxes it here.

0: Like a Different Language (Charles de Lauzirika)
Jul 24, 2014
Charles de Lauzirika (Twin Peaks Blu-ray producer) joins Jeremy and Allie to talk about The Complete Mystery, The Missing Pieces, and the history of Twin Peaks on home video.
Spoiler warning at 40:18. Spoiler-free again at 49:50.
De Lauzirika is considered one of the greats in home video thanks to his work on comprehensive Special Editions of Blade Runner, the Alien series, and countless other landmark DVD and Blu-ray releases.
