VistaGen – On a Mission to Produce Safer & Faster Acting Next-Gen Medicines Apr 04, 2017
    Show notes

VistaGen Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company concentrating on developing new generation medicines for depression and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. The lead CNS product candidate, AV-101, is a new generation antidepressant drug candidate in Phase 2 development. AV-101's mechanism of action is fundamentally differentiated from all FDA-approved antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics used adjunctively to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), with potential to drive a paradigm shift towards a new generation of safer and faster-acting antidepressants. In addition to the AV-101 programs, VistaStem, VistaGen's wholly owned subsidiary, is focused on applying human pluripotent stem cell technology, internally and with collaborators, to discover, rescue, develop and commercialize proprietary new chemical entities (NCEs), including small molecule NCEs with regenerative potential, for CNS and other diseases, and cellular therapies involving stem cell-derived blood, cartilage, heart and liver cells. VistaGen is utilizing its CardioSafe 3D to participate in the FDA's Comprehensive in-vitro Proarrhythmia Assay (CiPA) initiative designed to change the landscape of nonclinical drug development by providing a more complete and accurate assessment of potential drug effects on cardiac risk using stem cell-derived heart cells and in vitro ion channel data. In this podcast, Dr. Snodgrass discusses VistaStem's stem cell technology applications as well and their CardioSafe 3D™ program. Show notes

CureCoin is a CryptoCurrency based around Folding@Home that lets owners of both ASIC and GPU/CPU hardware to earn cure coins as a reward for mining (mining meaning giving computer time and capacity to helping reveal the structure of complicated biological proteins) CureCoin places ASICs to work at what they are good at, safeguarding a blockchain, while it puts GPUs and CPUs to work with work items that can only be done on them (protein folding). Joshua Smith, the founder along with Ivan and Alex, talks about the few cryptocurrencies that can be mined efficinetly using a CPU or GPU, vs. ASIC mining (the only possibly way to even consider mining Bitcoin). Sharpeyes LLC – Smart Glasses With Auto Focusing Capabilities Mar 29, 2017
    Show notes

Smart Glasses are made of glycerin-filled, liquid lenses that can automatically adjust the focus on what a person is seeing, whether it is far away or close up. The lenses are placed in battery-powered frames that can automatically adjust the focal length of the lenses based on what the wearer is looking at. These glasses are particularly suited for people with presbyopia, a condition in which the lens of your eye loses part of its ability to focus on objects at variable distances, typically requiring progressive lenses or bifocals and separate reading glasses. Doctor Carlos Mastrangelo, the creator of these Smart Glasses explains that altering how the liquid lenses are curved allows the smart glasses to focus on whatever the wearer is looking at. It takes about 14 milliseconds for the glasses to alter focus, and the rechargeable battery in the frames lasts more than 24 hours. Now in order to commercialize the product, Carlos has developed a company, Sharpeye LLC, to produce the product for the general public. Listen, subscribe, and review Future Tech Podcast. Jan Witowski – 3D Printing of Human Liver Surgical Planning Models Mar 29, 2017
    Show notes

Jan Witowski a medical student, talks to us about 3D liver modeling and how it helps surgeons do pre-surgical planning on patients with liver tumors by providing them a 3d printed model of the patient's liver in 24-48 hours for just $150, not $5,000. Witwoski 3D prints the liver models with their internal circulatory systems and tumors visible, so doctors and surgeons can identify potential problems in upcoming surgery, making it a lot easier for surgeons to extricate tumors, avoid damaging or cutting blood vessels, and more. The 3d printed liver models are made primarily for complex laparoscopic resections, which aren't everyday procedures and require detailed visualization, since it's vital to reduce possible complications as well as blood loss during the procedure. Medical students in the team go and talk to the patients about their illness, and the surgery they are about to undergo and explain the process using customized, full-sized 3D liver models as an educational tool. Patients seem to feel more confident going to the surgery and it also allows them to recover faster. At less than 1/10th the price and taking just a few days, Witkowski's team is providing a much-needed service that will undoubtedly lead to more successful liver operations (and operations on other organs and areas in the future).
