Fast.AI – Bringing "Deep Learning" To The Mainstream May 25, 2017
    Show notes

"Deep Learning" is an area in artificial intelligence research and design where a "ton of breakthroughs are happening right now," says Fast.AI co-founder Rachel Thomas. Fast.AI's mission in the AI space is to make Deep Learning more accessible to more people. Where before, you'd need graduate-to-Ph.D.-level work in math just to understand what's going on, now Fast.AI's course ware makes Deep Learning techniques available to everyday coders. In the last five to six years, Deep Learning has become a hot topic. Technically, Deep Learning is like any other kind of AI, in that it makes your computer behave intelligently. This has been around for decades. The difference is, in the last few years, it's started to take off as sub-field of its own. Deep Learning algorithms mimic neural networks in the brain. And the technology is improving exponentially every year, exceeding human intelligence in some cases. By Deep Learning," Fast.AI co-founders Rachel Thomas and Jeremy Howard are referring to a very specific class of algorithms applied to specific problems, for example, transcribing speech to text. Fundamentally, Fast.AI is an education company. The course offered is free. The goal is to help companies train the smart employees they already have to utilize Deep Learning technology.

Lastline.Com – Anti Malware Technology Keeping Computer Security Threats Away May 24, 2017
    Show notes

Tens of thousands of viruses, in different shapes and sizes threaten computers everyday. That's why Giovanni Vigna CTO and Co-Founder of Lastline.com, explains how their company prevents malware from affecting computer security. Lastline.com is not a traditional anti-virus, but much more than that. To put it in Vigna's words, nowadays viruses come "packaged" in many different formats such as PDFs or Doc Files. There is no way of knowing if the file is corrupted or not, unless you open it and see the effect. So how to protect yourself? Thanks to Lastline.com, there is a technology called Sandbox, which opens the file in a secure environment and checks the status without the file affecting your computer. Common Ground – Perry Marshall's Third Side In the Debate between Religion and Science May 24, 2017
    Show notes

In Evolution 2.0, author Perry Marshall doesn't take a side in the Darwinism-Creationism debate. He takes his own, third side: the Perry Marshall side. Electrical engineer Marshall doubts Darwin's theory of evolution, but not as a traditional Creationist. For him, there is a still better explanation for the origin of life on earth… one heretofore undiscovered by either side of the current debate. In Marshall's estimation, evolution—as it's taught in schools today—has been corrupted into something that is a.) accidental, and b.) inter-generational. For Marshall, evolution is very purposeful. Even intentional. And furthermore, it's something that affects an organism in real time—not simply between generations. In other words, for Marshall, evolution is not incompatible with God. There could be an all-powerful God who oversees the adaption of all life on the planet. If you're a Creationist, the party line is that evolution is a hoax. If you're pro-Evolution, you say there cannot be a God. Perry Marshall asks, Why not both? Perry Marshall's God is powerful enough to do that. Here is what you'll learn in this episode: * What the origins of life on earth might actually be * How Perry Marshall has scientifically validated the existence of God * What the scientific implications of a God might be Learn, subscribe, review FutureTech podcast.

Storing Data 215,000 times more densely using DNA – NY Genome May 22, 2017
    Show notes

Dina Zielinski from NY Genome talks about storing data using DNA – not traditional hard drives – and it's amazing what nature can do that human engineering (until now) can not. Losing data stored on flash drives, hard disks, USBs and on computer servers may become a thing of the past with DNA storage. At NY genome, Dina has successfully managed to encode and decode data stored onto a strand of DNA. Incredible, but true. This project has the possibility of storing 215,000 times more data in 1 gram of DNA, compared to a 1 Terabyte Hard Disk. Unfortunately, the process is not ready for commercial use, and encoding costing roughly $7,000. Decoding plus reading the data costing about $2,000, and a $9k price tag isn't viable. Will DNA storage ever be cost effective and retrievable quickly? That is for you to decide but don't forget how the first computer was even larger than the room you are in right now. The future holds great secrets for us to explore so stay in the know about future tech at futuretechpodcast.com. Make sure to review, subscribe and like us on Facebook and Twitter.

    Slock.it – Combining Ethereum-Based Smart Contracts with IoT Devices May 22, 2017
    Show notes

Stephan Tual, founder of Slock.it, talks about Ethereum-Based Smart Contracts that allow IoT devices, (such as door locks on Air BnB apartments) to be fully automated – unlocked and locked based on rules, such as when a rental payment is received for an apartment (unlocked) and 5 minutes after checkout time (locked). Other use cases are: electric charging stations that can be rented on demand, charging monitored remotely, and repaired if a signal showing malfunction is received. Slock.it has recently received $2 million in funding and is poised for fast growth. Listen, subscribe, and rate Future Tech Podcast, and enjoy this fascinating interview!

Nathaniel Calhoun on Solving Africa's Poverty, Education and Developmental Crises May 17, 2017
    Show notes

Nathaniel Calhoun, Vice Chairman of Global Grand Challenges and the Managing Director of the Global Solutions Program at Singularity University talks about Poverty, Education and Developmental Barriers in Africa. He aims to have a positive impact on these problems through the use of exponential technology. Having personally lived in several African countries for a number of years, Nathanial highlights some of the very basic problems that western people can't conceive of, like unfair banking system that charges extortionate fees, and a weak education system that doesn't even provide separate bathroom facilities for girls in schools. Just like everywhere in the world, teachers are not being compensated properly, keeping them in abject poverty. Nathaniel advocates a "how to fish" teaching strategy vs. "give them fish to eat".
