Michael West – Ceo Of Agex Therapeutics – Exploring The Science Of Aging Mar 20, 2018
    Show notes

The business of anti-aging has been the focus for scientists and anyone with a gray hair, for as long as we all can remember. Daily in magazines and on television, we are bombarded with buzzwords like free radicals, anti-aging, inflammation, preserving, skin-repair and so on. There are numerous companies all over the world dedicated to curing everything from cancer to wrinkles. Rather than focus on a specific ailment, AgeX Therapeutics, a biotechnology company formed in 2017, puts the spotlight on aging itself as the "disease". CEO Michael West, sits down to share his vision for AgeX, as they work on developing solutions, using powerful regenerative treatments to combat aging and its effects on the human body. He also weighs in on the compelling scientific advancements that have come along in the past 10-15 years in this field. Researchers are now starting to unify on what aging is and are forming a biology, so to speak. This allows like-minded folks to pool resources, ideas, energy and their scientific minds to solve the significant unmet needs in the age-related disease market.

Nick Conley – Chief Science Officer & Co-Founder of Epibiome – Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Mar 19, 2018
    Show notes

EpiBiome, a microbiome engineering company based in San Francisco, is busy developing next generation antibacterials to fight a real problem; the growing threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Their focus is also on engineering the human microbiome using technology called"phages", or bacteria-specific viruses. These "phages" are natural enemies of bacteria, essentially injecting it with the flu and killing it. They then go on to attach to other bacteria and do the same. Bacteriophages, or "phages" for short, have been around for a billion years and are still an effective evolutionary battle around today. EpiBiome is working to get these FDA-approved alternatives to traditional antibiotics, by using phage mixtures that will target and destroy known pathogens which have been formulated into a treatment for a specific indication. EpiBiome's wide focus is not only on agriculture and human health, but also they have cast a wide net on solving the same issues in clean water development, aquaculture and food safety. Nick Conley, now Chief Science Officer, sits down to explain the critical importance of finding innovative ways to combat antibiotic resistant bacteria and the threat it poses on our future.

David Grainger – Methuselah – Investigating and Targeting the Ageing Process in an Unprecedented Way Mar 19, 2018
    Show notes

The majority of research on the cause and treatment of ageing-related diseases has focused on the role of DNA in the ageing process. However, this area of research has proven to be one of the most difficult, and only a limited amount of progress has been made. What if the answer doesn't lie in DNA at all? This is the question that David Grainger set out to investigate when he founded Methuselah Health in 2014. Rather than focusing on the role of DNA in the ageing process, the researchers at Methuselah are looking at the role of proteins. Grainger explains that since proteins have the ability to repair damaged DNA, understanding the mechanism of protein damage and the effects of the accumulation of damaged proteins in the body may be the real key to mitigating the progression of ageing-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's. As the world's first quantitative platform for measuring protein damage, Methuselah is a pioneer in this emerging and exciting field of research. To find out more, visit methuselah-health.com.

Marco Abele- TEND- Co-owning and Investing in Collectibles on the Blockchain Mar 15, 2018
    Show notes

Marco Abele is the founder and CEO of TEND, a platform that will allow its users to invest in and have access to a variety of items, such as collectible cars, vineyards, and jewelry. Based on the interests of their customers and using blockchain technology, TEND will create certificates for popular items and allow for them to be co-owned in the form of digital tokens via smart contracts. For example, rather than spending the money to buy an expensive collectible car outright, a user can find people who are mutually interested in that car, enter a token-based co-ownership agreement with them, and start receiving access to and the proceeds of the appreciation of that car. TEND is not even a year old but has already developed a digital interface on which unique items can be managed, and plans to launch the platform this April to a select 100 customers in Switzerland. By the end of next year, they plan on entering the international market. Tune in to learn more, and visit www.tend.swiss for the latest updates.
