Cassandra Borchers – Partner at Thompson Hine – Ensuring Blockchain and Crypto Compliance for Your Business Apr 12, 2018
    Show notes

The world of blockchain and cryptocurrency is a quickly expanding market – the ultimate disruptor some might say, even comparable if not bigger than the internet boom. Some refer to its mystery and appeal as the "wild west". Whatever euphemism you might use to describe the space, the fact remains, the blockchain/crypto world is still largely undeveloped further translating into an unmanned, unlegislated playground with rules and laws that are still developing. That doesn't mean, however, the law is going to be understanding and kind if your business isn't meeting compliance criteria. This is where a firm like Thompson Hine comes in – specifically, professionals and attorneys like Cassandra Borchers. Borchers is a partner in the Corporate Transactions & Securities practice group at Thompson Hine. Her specialty is counseling clients on regulatory and compliance matters including all aspects of federal and state securities law and related issues, such as registration, regulatory reporting, cryptocurrency, private fund and mutual fund matters. The blockchain and crypto space is an exciting but daunting space for newcomers, especially for those who haven't yet a clue what compliance measures must be taken. Thompson Hine was one of the first firms to put together a practice group, initially focused just on bitcoin, which has now evolved to include blockchain and other crypto currency matters as well. The group focuses primarily on investment management, data privacy and regulatory practices in the space. In this interview Borchers explains how critical it is that businesses involved in the blockchain/crypto space, begin to develop a compliant business model that meets the ever evolving regulator requirements To do that she describes, they should be partnering with experts and attorneys who specialize in how to do just that.

Richard Ettl – Co-Founder & CEO of Smart Containers Group/ Skycell – Using Blockchain and Smart Contracts to Ship Pharmaceuticals and High-Value Food Apr 12, 2018
    Show notes

Smart Containers Group, with its SkyCell AG division, is a leading manufacturer of the world's safest temperature-controlled containers for climate-sensitive pharmaceuticals and high-value food items. Temperature control is a critical element to safely delivering most pharmaceuticals as well as certain food items, such as fish and beef, for example. Traditional methods of shipping such items has been in Styrofoam boxes packed with ice. With SkyCell's use of blockchain technology and smart contracts, they can guarantee the temperature within the containers they ship, will last 50% longer than current methods. SkyCell is using the blockchain technology to both track and remotely monitor each container to preserve the correct product temperature throughout the entire shipment process of the cargo. They are also now accepting cryptocurrency as payment in order to further expedite the process along with the use of smart contracts where customers can view, use and print invoices on the spot. Depending on a company's business model, SkyCell will rent the boxes to the specialized food producers of pharmaceutical companies, allowing them to then operate the fleet with their software and containers. George Avetisov- HYPR- Implementing Decentralized Authentication in the Financial Services Sector Apr 12, 2018
    Show notes

For the past several decades, major banks and enterprises have been centralizing the storage of user pins, passwords, credit card numbers and biometric data, which has made that information vulnerable to security breaches, cyber-attacks and single points of failure. When the security of centralized repositories is breached, millions of people are affected, and with a dollar metric for each lost password or incident of fraud, major enterprises can end up losing millions of dollars every year. HYPR is bringing a solution: the implementation of decentralized authentication in the mobile payments, retail banking and insurance space. Rather than storing user credentials in one location, the idea behind decentralized authentication is to securely isolate and encrypt user credentials on personal biometric mobile devices. By decentralizing the storage of this data, attacks on user information would have to happen one by one, rather than through a single attack on an enterprise. "HYPR has made decentralized authentication possible for major banks and enterprises like Mastercard…where mobile payments are secured with decentralized authentication powered by HYPR, so you may be HYPR-secured through one of your mobile banking applications, and you just don't know it," says George Avetisov, CEO of HYPR. Tune in for an exciting discussion that includes topics such as behavioral biometrics, biometric ATMs, and the growing interest in applying decentralized authentication to the IOT space. Leif-Nissen Lundbaek – Ceo & Co-Founder Xain Ag – Machine Learning And Governed Blockchain Innovation Apr 12, 2018
    Show notes

Xain AG, a blockchain startup is focused on developing concepts that use blockchain, artificial intelligence and data analysis on a decentralized platform. They are using a hybrid blockchain solution combining machine learning, or reinforcement learning, to strengthen the blockchain network. Leif Lundbaek, CEO, and Co-Founder at Xain AG explains how the concept began with a research project at Oxford University in 2014. It has since evolved into a system using modern machine learning on an Ethereum-based blockchain with the goal of enabling a robust and adaptable infrastructure for automated business processes. In 2017, XAIN AG won the 1st Porsche Innovation Contest. They are currently busy developing various projects with Porsche and DHL enabling these companies to build privacy friendly, secure environments to create strong positioning in an automation future. Lundbaek explains why data is an important component to developing AI and machine learning, which are now being applied to a wide variety of uses. Blockchain technology has a special role to play in the world of data. He uses Google as a strong example of a centralized entity they are trying to get away from, where every bit of information is easily available to anyone. Instead, Xain AG is continuing development on a platform for decentralized learning where knowledge can be shared and learned without giving all of the data away in the process. Mark Bonchek- ShiftThinking- Helping Businesses Identify and Shift Obsolete Mental Models Apr 10, 2018
    Show notes

We are in a time of exponential and disruptive change, so the mental models that we have don't really apply the same way anymore," explains Mark Bonchek, founder of ShiftThinking. For the past 20 years, Bonchek has been trying to understand the ways in which digital technology and network-based ways of communicating and connecting have affected society. As the founder of ShiftThinking, he's applying what he's learned in order to help leaders and organizations make the shift into new ways of thinking. Rather than thinking in terms of "What should we do?", Bonchek encourages business owners and leaders to ask whether or not they are thinking about things in the right way. He discusses which mental models are becoming obsolete and why, and how companies like Uber and Airbnb have already shifted into new ways of thinking: "In strategy and growth…the real shift…is to start thinking about it as a business platform…where you don't have suppliers and customers as two separate groups….people can be suppliers or customers, and you are a platform that's connecting supply and demand." Colin Gounden- VIA- Using AI and Machine Learning to Prioritize Global Energy Infrastructure Upgrades and Maintenance Apr 10, 2018
    Show notes

The energy industry spends over $100 billion per year just to maintain and upgrade the energy infrastructure that powers our lives. However, much of that infrastructure is outdated, inefficient, and carrying a high risk of failure. To make matters worse, much of the data that is necessary in order to address this problem is confidential and trapped behind firewalls. VIA is a company that is addressing these problems by using blockchain technology and machine learning solutions. With the recent adoption a new blockchain application called Trusted Analytics, VIA is obtaining access to vital data in a secure and anonymous way. Equipped with that data, VIA is using AI and machine learning as a prioritization tool for the replacement of transformers and other pieces of outdated equipment. With the ability to identify high-risk versus low-risk equipment, the process of upgrading and maintaining this vast infrastructure will be carried out in a more efficient, safe and cost-effective way. Colin Gounden is the President and CEO of VIA, and he offers insight on a variety of topics in the space where energy, blockchain technology and AI overlap. He also discusses the effect of increasingly extreme weather conditions and electric vehicles on the current energy infrastructure. Andy Park, Founder, And Philip Parker, Operations Lead With Coral Health Apr 10, 2018
    Show notes

Coral Health uses blockchain technology to improve healthcare by providing patients with control of personal medical records by improving efficiency using a streamlined process. According to Philip Parker, operations lead with Coral Health, patients currently do not have access to their own medical records which results in a healthcare system in which medical care is often based on the fragmented information. The result is an impersonal healthcare system that negatively impacts patient care and the industry. Coral Health aims to provide aggregate medical information in an efficient manner with complete control by the patient. A single app contains all the patient's medical history and information in real time. That information is secure and encrypted to ensure privacy and allows the patient to decide which health care provider gains access to what information.
