Brick by Brick– Advenit Makaya, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, European Space Research and Technology Centre of the European Space Agency – The Science and Engineering of Building Structures in Space from Indigenous Materials Jul 30, 2018
    Show notes

Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, Advenit Makaya, provides an informative overview of the scientific research into materials and processes that could allow structures to be built in space, from existing materials.

As an engineer at the European Space Research and Technology Centre of the European Space Agency, Makaya's work centers on the development of various technologically advanced materials and processes specifically for space applications. Makaya holds a master's degree in general engineering from École Centrale de Lyon as well as a master's degree in materials processing from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Makaya explains that his work involves current applications of materials and processes for spacecraft manufacturing, but also focuses on groundbreaking concepts for long-term objectives.

One area of particular interest and specialization for Makaya and his team is the development of processes to utilize the innate materials of a particular space destination. By using indigenous materials that are already available on a particular planet, costs can be reduced, and efficiency increased, as less material must be loaded and hauled from Earth. Makaya is currently investigating the process that would allow space travelers to 3D print bricks from existing moon dust, which would certainly save time as cargo hauling from Earth could take months, or years even, to reach a specific space destination. Through multiple missions to the moon to collect data, then samples, Makaya's team is provided with essential information, such as the make-up and composition of the soil, etc. to further their study and bring research into reality. And while one might expect that materials would be wildly different on the moon, though proportions and composition, etc. of materials varies, the materials on the moon and Earth are quite similar in many ways. Essentially, Makaya states, there have been no unique materials discovered on the moon, which bodes well for advancing their processes to accomplish the manufacturing tasks in space.

The space research engineer discusses material differences that do exist between Earth and the moon, such as roundness versus sharpness. He explains that the moon's particles are sharper than the Earth's and as such adjustments in approach and manufacturing processes must be made. As the moon has no atmosphere, it has no protection from the sun's radiation. Therefore, all existing materials on the moon are impacted in different ways than they would be on Earth, and thus even though the sand on Earth and the sand on the moon are quite similar in composition, their environment takes its toll.

The researchers have successfully produced multiple miniature blocks, which were used to build model structures such as domes and trusses, etc. for future habitats in space, which has demonstrated the feasibility of the process. Further challenges will be to ensure the process works in a low gravity, extremely dusty environment with tremendously varying temperatures, especially considering the highly charged materials that exist on the moon. Makaya discusses the primary objective—to create structures that house and protect the occupants and equipment, but he shares the importance of psychological issues as well, such as allowing light in for the overall morale of inhabitants. But he warns that this is an area that is highly complex, as light-allowing structural material poses a potentially greater radiation risk for occupants. As Makaya's study and research continues, the goal will be to take the engineering and science into practical application on the moon, and multiple countries worldwide are taking an interest in doing just that.

The Unavoidable Reality of Virtual Reality – David M. Ewalt, Author of Defying Reality: The Inside Story of the Virtual Reality Revolution – How Virtual and Augmented Reality Will Transform the Way We Work, Play, and Experience Daily Life Jul 30, 2018
    Show notes

David M. Ewalt, author of Defying Reality: The Inside Story of the Virtual Reality Revolution, which covers the history, development, and future of emerging tech, leads us on a virtual world journey covering the state, and future, of emerging technology.

David is an award-winning business journalist and author. He is a noted expert on the nexus between gaming and technology. David is a special projects editor for Reuters and is a former senior editor of Forbes magazine. David also writes for major periodicals such as The Wall Street Journal, New York magazine, and The Boston Globe, to name a few.

David Ewalt's keen interest in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality drew him into further study and research of trends and future movements in emerging tech. Ewalt explains how virtual reality truly offers businesses an ideal means in which to demo their products to potential customers worldwide, by offering an experience that heightens a user's understanding and feel for the product. From fashion to automotive and more, virtual reality offers a remarkable adventure that goes far beyond facts and pictures. Connecting people with a palpable physical presence is perhaps what takes virtual reality far above other means of communicating, as the human brain can be lulled into feeling the experience is somewhat real.

While the value of virtual reality for commercial businesses, and of course the porn industry, is obvious, Ewalt suggests that virtual reality experiences can dramatically increase interest in humanitarian causes as well. For as interviews or documentary style clips are filmed to be experienced in virtual reality, the viewer is often more engaged in the story and subject, and certainly the people as they tell their stories, which can increase one's empathy or interest in the issue.

The technology journalist suggests that we are heading for a future society in which a large percentage of people will be wearing smart glasses with virtual assistants, icons, and virtual reality options into virtual worlds for literally everything. And as virtual reality may cause some to retreat into their basements to never be seen again, Ewalt's expectation is that the technology will enhance most peoples lives in many ways such that the tech will surge.

As young technologists who grew up watching The Matrix or reading William Gibson move into the entrepreneurial mindset, virtual reality options for our world will become more pervasive, and perhaps ubiquitous. Ewalt states that products are still in the Model T phase but the rate of advancement with the technology is dizzying, with new improvements happening monthly. And with hardware improvements, and better content for business and play, and the introduction of virtual reality into other traditional businesses, innovation will explode.

Artificial Intelligence and Real Capital – Samiron Ray, Principal, Comet Labs – Investing in AI and Tech That Seeks to Move Our World Forward Jul 27, 2018
    Show notes

Samiron Ray, principal of Comet Labs (cometlabs.io), provides an overview of the interesting AI-based startups that are emerging in the marketplace and how his company selects who to back. Comet Labs is a venture capital fund that was founded in 2015 that invests primarily in early stage artificial intelligence and tech companies that are stepping in pace with some of the world's largest industries. To date, Comet Labs has invested in 35 companies in this space. Comet Labs' senior leadership believes that AI and robotics will allow humans to rethink how industries perform and accomplish tasks. Samiron Ray states that increased computing power, large volumes of data, deeper research, and advances in generative adversarial networks have supercharged the landscape. And Ray's company is interested in how robotics can advance many types of businesses, including some of Comet Labs' traditional investments in agriculture, transportation, insurance, and others. Ray explains how AI can assist established companies with automation but also transformation with new workflows, from assisting sales with follow-ups and engagement to tasking and streamlining.

In terms of their investment strategy, Ray explains that Comet Labs looks for companies that have a team of strong technologists with a deep understanding of their industry and what it takes to sell into that industry. Additionally, they look for extremely valuable technology that could provide large returns as well as companies with proprietary data advantages that have exclusivity. Ray acknowledges that some labor jobs will be lost, but he mentions that, although the media doesn't cover the topic, many new jobs will actually be created with advancing AI as well. For an AI moves into more industries, a need will arise for qualified personnel to train and maintain robots, to work creatively thinking of new services and applications for the technology.

Ray discusses defensibility, and how they assess individual startups in regard to what makes them defensible against another, specifically speaking, what makes the company's data unique, valuable, and hard for their competitors to access. As AI training is based on data, Ray's company looks at, and favors, proprietary data over volume, for the companies they find interesting. And in regard to the training data for AI, Ray stresses the importance of explainability, in industries where privacy is concerned as they work with extremely confidential information, as well as bias issues that must be carefully examined.

Ray explains that AI companies are not just streamlining and automating workflow, but are actually reinventing the core economics of industries. End to end strategies is of particular interest to Comet Labs as they consider where to make their capital expenditures. Personal passion from the founders, AI talent, knowledge of customer psychology, and industry expertise are four valuable qualities that Comet Labs looks for in emerging startups.

The Disease Time Machine – Ira Pastor – CEO, Bioquark, Inc. – How the Study of Organisms May Show Us the Way to Turn Back Time for Cell Regeneration Jul 27, 2018
    Show notes

The Bioquark CEO provides an informative analysis of the study of biologic solutions to human health in the 21st century. Bioquark, Inc. is a life sciences company that develops proprietary, combinatorial biologic products for health issues, including the repair and regeneration of organs and tissues, as well as for reversion of degenerative diseases. Pastor's company looks to organisms in the natural world for clues to human diseases and conditions. Pastor's team is particularly interested in the complex regeneration process of the salamander, and select worms that can amazingly revert cancerous cells back to normal tissue.

Bioquark's mission is to find the connection point that will bring these complex health processes in line with the study of human health, for advances that could help fight disease or perhaps eradicate it. The life sciences company seeks to take bold steps forward in the areas of neurology (for central nervous system damage, Alzheimer's, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord issues, etc.), cancer, and metabolic disorders (diabetes, and others).

Pastor will provide an overview of their study of localized cells and why it's important to figure out the signaling and regenerative processes these cells use to grow new cells that are regionally specific. And he'll explain how Bioquark's work is furthering the historical study of the human egg, as the egg contains all the signals necessary to start its journey to become a human embryo. Ultimately, Pastor hopes to find ways to bridge the gap between what we know about organisms and their ability to regenerate tissue, and wound healing in humans. Finding the answers that lie within that gap may hold the key to startling advances in human health.
