In this episode, I recount how Lolly and I visited Tubuai, a small island 400 miles south of Tahiti. This is the island where Addison Pratt landed in 1844--the same island where I served as a missionary in 1968. I talk about an unexpected encounter I had with someone I had not seen for 56 years and the impact of a relationship renewed.

Rationalization is a problem for most of us, and if we examine the action closely enough, we find that it distances us from God. When we rationalize, we go against ourselves. We have internal conflict, and that brings frustration and discouragement. In this podcast, we hit the topic head on and suggest ways to recognize rationalization and avoid it.

(4.20) Does Venting Our Anger Help? May 09, 2024
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

The summary of the text highlights the misconception that venting anger is beneficial for relationships, as per a study by Russell McClendon. This comprehensive meta-analysis, involving over 10,000 participants, reveals that venting actually exacerbates aggression and worsens situations. Instead, it suggests that activities which lower arousal levels are more effective in anger management. Contrary to common beliefs, physical exertions like running may not help due to increased heart rates fueling anger. Techniques such as slow flow yoga, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing, and taking a time out are recommended for effectively reducing arousal and managing anger. The text also integrates insights from biblical verses and a talk by President Nelson on the adverse effects of anger and the importance of forgiveness, understanding, and avoiding harsh reactions in fostering healthier relationships and personal well-being.

    (4.19) Can Personality Change? May 02, 2024
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

The episode addresses the complex issue of loneliness and its significant impact on individual health, distinguishing it from the mere state of being alone, as one can feel lonely even amidst company. The author discusses a conversation with a Frenchman that delves into the interplay between religion and science, demonstrating an openness to truths from both realms and a curiosity about their convergence, particularly in the context of personal beliefs. Introducing research by psychologist Eric W. Dolan, the text reveals that contrary to the longstanding belief in static personalities, individuals’ traits can evolve over time. A study involving more than 9,600 people over 50 years old showed that loneliness can diminish extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, suggesting that social engagement, friendliness, and self-discipline can deteriorate due to sustained feelings of isolation.

Highlighting the gradual nature of change, the text encourages patience and persistence, referencing the concept of repentance and the enduring potential for transformation at any stage of life. This perspective aligns with the core teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ, reinforcing the message that growth and improvement are always possible.
Show Notes: The Intersect of Loneliness, Personality, and the Power of Change

Episode Summary: In today’s episode, we explore the nuanced topic of loneliness and its profound effects on personal health and well-being. We discuss how loneliness extends beyond the physical state of being alone and can be experienced even in the presence of others. Join us as we delve into a fascinating conversation with a Frenchman that bridges the gap between science and religion, shedding light on the convergence of truths from both worlds in the context of individual belief systems.

    Main Themes:

    • Loneliness vs. Solitude: We dissect the distinction between being physically alone and the emotional state of loneliness, underscoring that one can feel isolated even in a crowd.
    • Convergence of Science and Religion: Our dialogue with a Frenchman opens the floor to discuss how both scientific evidence and religious beliefs can coexist and contribute to a broader understanding of personal truths.
    • Personality Dynamics: Introducing insights from psychologist Eric W. Dolan’s research, we highlight the groundbreaking discovery that personality traits are not as static as once thought, and how loneliness can lead to significant changes in extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness among individuals.
    • Impact of Loneliness on Personality: We examine a study involving more than 9,600 participants over the age of 50, which indicates that sustained loneliness can erode social engagement, friendliness, and self-discipline.
    • Embracing Change: The text encourages listeners to have patience and persist in the face of gradual change, drawing upon the concept of repentance and the belief in the enduring potential for transformation at any stage of life.
    • Gospel Teachings and Personal Growth: We tie in the core teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ, affirming that growth and improvement are continuous processes and that change is always within reach.

    Episode Highlights:

    • Anecdotal evidence from a conversation that illustrates the blending of religious curiosity and scientific understanding.
    • A deep dive into recent psychological research that challenges long-held beliefs about the permanence of personality traits.
    • An inspiring message of hope and the possibility of change, supported by both secular and religious perspectives.

Final Thoughts: As we conclude this episode, we leave our listeners with the notion that loneliness is not just a personal struggle but a universal one that can shape our personalities in profound ways. However, there

(4.18) Louisa Barnes Pratt: First Sister Missionary in This Dispensation Apr 25, 2024
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Louisa Barnes Pratt played a pioneering role as the first woman to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning her journey in support of her husband Addison Pratt’s mission to French Polynesia in 1844 and joining him in 1850. Facing hardships such as scurvy and the challenges of raising four daughters alone, Louisa’s resilience was evident in her trek from Nauvoo to winter quarters and her subsequent mission work. Upon Addison’s return after six years, the family faced internal conflicts about returning to Polynesia but eventually embarked on a challenging voyage to Tupoy. There, despite language barriers, they engaged in teaching and supporting the local community, with their daughters quickly learning Tahitian. However, political tensions, exemplified by Elder James Brown’s expulsion due to anti-government activities, ultimately forced Addison Pratt and his companions to leave in 1852, entrusting the continuation of their mission work to the Polynesian saints. Louisa’s story, a testament to her faith and dedication, is based on historical accounts and highlights her significant contributions to missionary work alongside her husband and other early missionaries.
