Mantis, designed and stitched by Alexandrina Dordea.Dragon, designed and stitched by Alexandrina Dordea.
This week’s Fiber Talk guest is embroidery artist Alexandrina Dordea. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and the EGA Sampler U, at egausa.org. Alexandrina is a self-taught Romanian artist who uses tambour embroidery, stump work, goldwork, beadwork, and punch needle techniques to create outstanding needle art. Her current interest is creating insects, realistic and artistic, and, much to the chagrin of entomologists, some with eight legs. Anatomy aside, the end result is eye-popping needlework. In the conversation, we learn about her needlework journey, her design process, and have no luck learning what will follow her insect phase. Several of her designs, insect and otherwise, are available from her Etsy shop and she’s an artist you need to follow, either on Instagram or Facebook. While you’re online, join the EGA and register for the EGA National Seminar and Sampler U.–Gary
Sampler University is a new offering for members and non-members at the 2025 EGA National Seminar.

Fiber Talk with Suzie Vallerie of The Enriched Stitch and The Caron Collection
Apr 19, 2025
Stitched by Suzie Vallerie.Canvas stitched by Suzie VallerieCyberpointers makes this week’s show possible. Our guest is Suzie Vallerie, owner of The Enriched Stitch needlepoint shop and new owner of The Caron Collection line of threads. In addition to the daily business of operating a thriving needlepoint shop, Suzie designs and paints her own canvases and hosts retreats and classes in the Victorian house that is adjacent to the shop. When Lois Caron passed away she purchased the very popular Caron Collection thread line. We were able to talk to Suzie just as she was getting ready to plunge her hands into the world of dyeing threads. It was fun to learn what she knows so far and to hear some of the ideas she has for the Caron Collection. Watch for new colors coming soon and check out CyberPointers, at cyberpointers.org, for many new projects and workshops.–Cindy and Gary

Designing Smalls from the Iesabella Kettlewell Sampler
Apr 14, 2025
Beth did some special stitches to enhance some of the Iesabella Kettlewell sampler motifs.Gary used a butterfly and an element from the border from Iesabella Kettlewell to make what will become a small pillow. This week’s show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and the 2025 EGA National Seminar, Needlework Faire, Nov. 11 to 16 in Dallas, Texas. All of the details are at egausa.org, then select the Events page. One of the features of the national seminar is a new event called Sampler U, a two-day event open to EGA members and non-members. Sampler U will feature two projects: A Sampler Sewing Roll taught by Becky Noland of Lucy Beam and the beautiful sampler Iesabella Kettlewell 1818, taught by Sylvia Stecker of Running with Needles and Scissors. Sylvia will teach the sampler as a whole and the technique of making smalls from sampler motifs. To illustrate this approach, Beth and Gary made their own smalls from the Iesabella Kettlewell sampler and those smalls are the subject of this week’s show. Enjoy the show, let us know your thoughts, and register soon for the EGA National Seminar and/or Sampler U at egausa.org.–Beth and Gary

This is Cindy’s version of the Tanja Berlin needle book that Beth and Gary have in our upcoming projects.Fraktur Bees, by Hello from Liz Mathews, is one of several projects Gary has in the works.A month has passed since we did a Midweek Chat. We’re back on our normal schedule and this week Beth and Gary covered basic news then started talking about the various projects we have in our queues. We got wound up talking about them and the show basically became a WIP parade. For those who listen to the audio version of the show, we’ve provided a slide show of the projects on the Fiber Talk website page for this podcast. Note that scheduling issues prevented us from recording with Suzie Vallerie, new owner of the Caron Collection threads. We’ll have that show for you next week. This week will be a show Beth and Gary recorded about making smalls out of sampler motifs. We also invite you to support us by becoming a Fiber Talk Patreon subscriber at patreon.com/fibertalk.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk Discusses Scroll Frames and Stitch Paths
Mar 16, 2025
Is your technique resulting in the best possible stitches?Clean holes provide a better appearance when you need to share them with multiple threads. Thanks to Sassy Jacks Stitchery for sponsoring this first in a series of shows in which we discuss, in depth, various aspects of stitching, as requested by our listeners. This week we talk about the pros, cons, and different types of scroll frames and how/when we use them. Then we move on to our views of the stitch path, i.e., how you approach stitching an element in a project to result in the best stitch structure, cleanest holes, and optimum overall appearance. Note that what we offer is simply our opinion/approach and we only offer these techniques for your consideration when stitching your own projects. There is no right or wrong approach. Stitch your projects the way that gives you the most enjoyment. If what we offer helps, so much the better. We also welcome your reactions and thoughts. In addition, consider supporting Fiber Talk by becoming a Patreon member at patreon.com/Fiber Talk.–Beth, Cindy, Gary

Fiber Talk with Emilie Odeile and Ken Chapin
Mar 09, 2025
“Goodnight Moon” needle art diorama by Dundee & Lee.“Goodnight Moon,” the beloved children’s story by Margaret Wise Brown, is the focus of this week’s textile arts exploration with Emilie Dundee Odeile and Ken Lee Chapin of Dundee & Lee. The story of how Emilie and Ken met from across the country and formed a partnership and company to create outstanding needle art displays is straight out of a Hollywood movie script. Their signature piece, so far, is the life-sized diorama, “Goodnight Moon, A Fiber Tale,” which was constructed with 152 miles of yarn and nearly 6 million stitches. It’s a stunning piece that has already been admired by thousands of lovers of needle arts and the book. But the real story is how these impressive, creative artists are making their visions become reality and available for the public to enjoy. Be sure to visit their website and watch the videos on YouTube to thoroughly enjoy their work. For lovers of “Goodnight Moon,” their video of the reading by Jason and Jett using animation of the diorama will bring back childhood memories.–Gary
