Fiber Talk with Yvette Stanton IV
Feb 23, 2025
“Hardanger Filling Stitches,” Yvette Stanton’s latest book, is a treasure-trove of hardanger filling stitches.Instructions for the impressive sampler are included in “Hardanger Filling Stitches.”Yvette Stanton returns for the fourth time to talk about her latest book Hardanger Filling Stitches. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. Be sure to check out the Through the Needle’s Eye galleries at the EGA website. Hardanger Filling Stitches is an impressive collection of 100 filling stitches and variations, all presented in Yvette’s superb style of easily followed step-by-step diagrams and instructions, grouped by stitch type. Maybe one of the most useful features of the book is the Filling Stitch Pictorial Index, which lets you quickly find the look you want and then turn to the instructions. In our conversation we learn how the book was put together, how it functions, and the value it provides needleworkers, particularly in concert with Yvette’s excellent Early-Style Hardanger book. There is no one better at the whitework technique and Yvette Stanton’s library of how-to books is unmatched. For U.S. listeners, your best source for the books is Sassy Jacks Stitchery, the official distributor for most of the catalog and provider of all of her books.–Beth and Gary

The Royal School of Needlework book, “200 Essential Embroidery Stitches,” is available from our sponsor, Sassy Jacks Stitchery.Stitch instructions in the RSN book are extremely well done and easy to follow. This week’s show, sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, is not our usual needle art designer interview. The good folks at the Royal School of Needlework, through publisher Search Press, have published a new book that we feel should be in the library of every needleworker. The book, 200 Essential Embroidery Stitches, is an excellent print extension of the Royal School’s powerful Stitch Bank. In this week’s show, Beth and Gary do an in-depth review of the book. Prior to publishing this week’s show, we contacted Kim at Sassy Jacks and she has ordered a supply so you can order it and have it shipped to you as soon as Kim receives her shipment.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk with Amy Jones
Feb 09, 2025
Floral arrangement by Amy Jones.Purse designed and embroidered by Amy Jones. We travel to Australia this week to talk with embroidery artist Amy Jones of Grandpa Cat. Our show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Amy is a multi-faceted artist who works primarily with needle and thread using new and recycled materials. She also designs coloring pages, creates embroidery kits, teaches embroidery workshops, and frequently exhibits her art. While she is skilled at painting and drawing, Amy prefers needle and thread because of the way it allows her to express her interpretations of nature, either in the realistic or abstract form. As for the company name Grandpa Cat, you’ll have to listen to the conversation to learn where that originated. After you listen to the conversation, visit Amy’s website to experience her work.–Beth and Gary

Fiber Talk Remembers Jean Lea
Feb 02, 2025
The passing of Jean Lea will leave a huge void in the needlework world, particularly for those who love, reproduce, and stitch samplers. In addition to being a terrific person, Jean was widely known as the owner of The Attic, one of the few true destination needlework shops. Anyone who spent any time with her was quickly immersed in her passion and love for samplers and amazed at her extensive knowledge. For me, the thing that set her apart from others is the role she played putting sampler charts, threads, and linen in the hands of so many stitchers. It was really hard to walk out of that store without at least one sampler to stitch. She was a major part of why samplers are so popular today. Over the years, Fiber Talk did several shows with Jean and, to remember her, I went back through the archives to find one that gives us a true sense of who she was, what she knew, and what samplers meant to her. This video, from Oct. 2021, stood out. I asked her to choose some of her favorites, and I’m sure that was a tall task for Jean, so we could spend 30 min. talking about them. It was great fun recording that show and more enjoyable watching it this week to remember her. I hope you find it to be a good memory of a great lady. Thanks, Jean. RIP—Gary

Fiber Talk with Caroline Gilman
Jan 26, 2025
Atlantic Blue Canvas represents 11 painted-canvas designers.Caroline’s company provides a wide variety of painted canvases. The life of a military wife, living in upstate New York, and the pandemic catalyzed Caroline Gilman’s interest in needlepoint. Our conversation with Caroline is sponsored by Avlea Folk Embroidery and the Fiber Talk Needle Arts Weekend. During those hours in New York, Caroline found her home with painted-canvas needlepoint. It wasn’t long before she was creating and painting her own designs. That naturally led to selling those designs and the forming of Atlantic Blue Canvas. The next-level part occurred when Caroline started providing a channel for other painted-canvas artists to sell their designs. Today she represents 11 artists and provides a wide-ranging catalog of designs. Learn all the details in this week’s conversation.–Beth and Gary
