Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

OUTWEIGH: Riley Laster (dietician + big fan of intuitive eating) is our expert guest for the next 3 weeks with Amy. In this episode (1 of 3) they talk about Riley's personal story and struggles with eating/clean eating, seeking control through dieting, getting attention with weight loss (which is why we never want to comment on anyone's weight loss!!!), hitting rock bottom, and relationships not getting full attention because of getting distracted by diets!

Our favorite quote from this episode comes from Riley's husband: "My life sucked when you were eating rice cakes."

    There's A Difference Between Giving Up & Knowing That You've Had Enough (5th Thing) Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the '5th Thing' with Amy & Kat!! Today’s quote is from a listener that sent us something from @_typelikeagirl: "There's a difference between giving up and knowing that you've had enough." Amy shared about a psychiatric assessment she recently had that led to a conversation about medication & how our brain chemistry changes over time, so stuff we tried years ago that didn’t work…might work for us now…or vice versa. They also share listener emails from Sara & Naomi + we hear a special message from JAX (the artist behind the song ‘Victoria’s Secret’)

If It’s Not A Hell Yes, It’s A No + Encouragement To Explore, Dream, Discover + We’re Meant to Lose Our Way + Home Hacks Oct 20, 2022
    Show notes

    FIRST THING:
Amy loves listening to Oprah’s podcast & her intro gets Amy every single time! She loves it. It goes like this: "I'm Oprah Winfrey. Welcome to Super Soul Conversations: The Podcast. I believe one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself is time—taking time to be more fully present. Your journey to become more inspired & connected to the deeper world around us starts right now." TIME IS A GIFT!!! However, time can be hard to find, so Amy shares some tips from Ally Fallon’s (@AllyFallon) book: The Power of Writing It Down on “Making Space In Your Calendar” — these tips will help you take an honest look at your calendar so you can see where all your time is going! Also, you’ve likely heard the saying: “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no” — try to keep that in mind when you’re looking at your calendar too!

    SECOND THING:
Amy talks about exploring, dreaming & discovering with her brother-in-law Ben Dozier.
It all started with this Mark Twain quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Ben then shares a motto his family & business has adopted that is in alignment with this quote and it’s “vamos afuera” which means let’s go out / let’s go outside! They like to say that and see where it takes them! What are your vamos afuera moments in life??? Another good quote to keep in mind that has a similar theme is this Chinese Proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

    THIRD THING:
Amy shares a post that recently resonated with her from @TheAngryTherapist! It’s all about how we are meant to lose our way because that is how we find ourselves. The post is from his Instagram page on October 3rd if you want to go back and read it.

    FOURTH THING:
Amy saw someone share that they often search thrift stores for cute casserole dishes…so that way when they have to make a home cooked meal for someone…they can deliver it in a REAL DISH that the person can then just keep (and not have to worry about washing & returning). Such a good idea, right?? This led to Amy sharing some other “home hacks” from a cool account that’s gone viral on TikTok called: @CreativeExplained.

You’re Never Too Old To Dream A New Dream, Health Rules That Are Total B.S. & More (5th Thing) Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the '5th Thing' with Amy & Kat!! Today’s quote is from @overheardnewyork: “This guy at work called me a girlboss, so now I call him a boy boss…he hates that!” Lol **Bonus quote from Bob Goff: “You will find what you are looking for. If you look for fear…you’ll find it. If you look for stuff to bum you out…you’ll find it. If you look for hope you’ll find it.”

Do you lock your doors at night? Do you keep a key under your doormat? Kat just started watching “The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist” and this show is blowing her mind. This convo is a reminder to NOT post in “real time” if you’re on vacation because people will know you’re away and they can break into your house…also make sure you have your precise location off on social media!

Email Time!!!! Stephanie sent us an email about gratitude & making sure we don’t take things for granted + her prayer journal + she shared several awesome/encouraging quotes that we all can benefit from! One of our faves that she sent: “Focus on the good and the good will come into focus!”

Amy then went over a list of “Health Rules That Are Total B.S.” (i.e. eating late at night causes weight gain)

Jen Hatmaker: Starting Over, Being Outside Of Your Comfort Zone, Empty Nesting & Gratitude Oct 13, 2022
    Show notes

So excited to have Jen Hatmaker on to talk about these 4 things with Amy:

    STARTING OVER:

In 2020, after 27 years of marriage, Jen found herself unexpectedly getting a divorce...forcing her to start things over! She talks about the suffering and loss and how she was able to rebuild and heal (regarding this topic...please go to Jen's Instagram, @JenHatmaker, and read her post from July 26th with the side by side picture of herself 2 years apart to the date...it's crazy/awesome how much lighter she looks this year!!)

BEING OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE:

Jen is no stranger to writing (she's a New York Times bestselling author!!) but she just wrote a cookbook for the first time and she definitely had to step outside of her comfort zone + learn to flex new muscles during that process! Her cookbook is called Feed These People (releasing 10/18) and it's all about cooking for normal people, hospitality, & the importance of the table! Amy's favorite sections are for sure: "Food That Goes In Carbs" & "Food When You Have No More Damns To Give." Click Here to order!

    EMPTY NESTING (sort of):

Jen has no kids living with her for the first time since she was 23; and the "sort of" part is because Remy (a junior in high school) is doing a year abroad in Spain - so Jen is experiencing a quiet home for the first time in a very, very long time and she shares what that's been like for her!

    GRATITUDE:

Jen does '4 Things Gratitude' by giving us a TV show, a book, a drink, and an Instagram follow that she is currently thankful for!

TV show: Derry Girls (Season 3 recently came out)
Book: Codependent No More by Melody Beattie
    Food/Drink: Old Fashioned
    Instagram Follow: @VicBlends

    JEN'S BIO:
Jen Hatmaker is the New York Times bestselling author of For the Love and Fierce, Free, and Full of Fire, along with twelve other books. She hosts the award-winning For the Love podcast, is the delighted curator of the Jen Hatmaker Book Club, and leader of a tightly knit online community where she reaches millions of people each week. Jen is a co-founder of Legacy Collective, a giving organization that grants millions of dollars toward sustainable projects around the world. She is a mom to five kids and lives happily just outside Austin, Texas.
