Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Feelings Aren’t Facts, Stretching vs. Compromising, and Why Talking to Yourself Is Actually Genius Apr 29, 2025
    Show notes

Amy and Kat dive into the important reminder that feelings aren’t facts. Yes, feelings give us information, but they don’t always tell us the whole truth. They also talk about why confusion might actually be a sign you're growing, why talking to yourself out loud is a good thing (according to science!), and how to build curiosity instead of judgment when emotions get messy.

Plus: Amy shares a funny story about stretching, Kat breaks down what to do when a therapist gives you the ick, and a beautiful email about finding hope during a hard fertility journey

Remember: your feelings are real…but you get to decide how much they drive the car!!

Divorced, Disappointed, and Debating a Confrontation (Couch Talks) Apr 24, 2025
    Show notes

Amy and Kat respond to an email from a listener navigating a tough post-divorce situation. Her ex-husband’s behavior (especially around their daughter’s upcoming wedding) is testing her patience. He hasn’t offered a dime to help, and their adult kids are pulling away from him for a long list of reasons. Now she’s asking: Do I stay in my lane… or finally say something? Amy and Kat talk through boundaries, money, and how to support your kids without taking responsibility for what someone else refuses to do. Plus, something fun: They play a voicemail from a listener who called in with advice about her own breast augmentation — a nice follow-up to last week’s listener question. We love when listeners help each other out!

Adult Dating, the Desire to Be Wanted & Leaning Into Fear Apr 22, 2025
    Show notes

Amy shares a personal story about the fears she had dating her boyfriend (a widower with three kids) and how her primal question of "Am I wanted?" came to the surface. Kat takes us through the emotion of gladness and why joy can sometimes feel just as scary as fear.

Fear and gladness are the final 2 core feelings, so make sure to listen to the previous episodes if you missed the other 6 feelings. Per usual, Amy & Kat share the gifts and impairments of each emotion (including the feeling of the day!)

Hope you enjoy the stories, therapy takeaways, and remember: if you have a “Lunch with Leslie” type situation pop up……it may just change your life!!!!

Breast Implants, Body Confidence, & The Inner Tug-of-War (Couch Talks) Apr 17, 2025
    Show notes

Amy & Kat are answering a question from a listener who’s considering a breast augmentation. She’s navigating that familiar tension of wanting to feel more confident in her body…while also wanting to accept it as it is. Kat (who happens to be a therapist specializing in body image) offers insight on how to explore the why behind a choice like this, the difference between need vs. want, and where body-based decisions can lead emotionally. Amy shares her own experience and they also touch on topics like: breast implant illness, the long-term reality of having implants, and what it looks like to make a confident, informed decision.

Peeing in Public, Fertility Struggles, & Shame vs. Guilt Apr 15, 2025
    Show notes

Amy & Kat are feeling embarrassed…and not just because Amy had to squat near tortillas at the grocery store to avoid peeing her pants. Amy & Kat also dig into 2 more core feelings: Shame and Guilt. They unpack the difference between the two (spoiler: they get confused a lot), share personal stories (both Amy & Kat have fertility journeys) and talking about how these feelings can actually guide growth and connection…when we let them.

From awkward gym moments to mom guilt to deeper wounds around identity and worth, this episode is real, relatable, and kind of funny…in a vulnerable way.

Enjoy and don’t forget to have the day you need to have!

Boundaries & Cutting Ties with Family (Couch Talks) Apr 10, 2025
    Show notes

Amy & Kat respond to a listener email from a mom who set firm boundaries with her husband’s family after ongoing disrespect. It’s been 2 years of no contact, but now her kids are starting to ask questions. How much do you tell them? How do you keep it age-appropriate? And how do you model healthy boundaries without blaming or bashing? Amy & Kat share thoughts, personal stories, and practical advice that applies to way more than just family drama!

Slamming Doors, Blow Up Dolls & Men Crying Apr 08, 2025
    Show notes

We're back with 2 more core feelings: Sad & Angry! Plus, our feeling of the day: Energized (even though Amy wanted it to be “sore” because she’s on a sprinting-for-hormones journey!) Somehow childhood memories come up about naked pool parties + doors getting removed from hinges + blow up dolls + the infamous frog paper weight (with a very funny body part situation!!)

Also: Amy and Kat both get real about what sadness & anger are trying to tell us, men crying, Amy’s face fitness scam saga continues, and the noise Kat has to navigate at her office while trying to do therapy with clients.

How Honest Is Too Honest on a First Date? (Couch Talks) Apr 03, 2025
    Show notes

Amy and Kat respond to a heartfelt message from a listener who’s re-entering the dating world after a stage 4 metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. She asks a vulnerable and powerful question: “At what point do I tell someone I have breast cancer?”

They offer encouragement to anyone navigating dating with a complicated backstory. Whether you're dealing with illness, grief, or another personal challenge, this conversation reminds us that we’re all worthy of love—and that vulnerability can be a bridge, not a burden.

Ugly, Lonely, Hurt: Real Talk + Is Amy's Face Fitness a Scam? Apr 01, 2025
    Show notes

Kat runs Amy through a ‘con artist checklist’ to see if Amy’s fallen for a scam with all of her face fitness investments. Amy and Kat also go over 2 of the 8 core feelings: lonely and hurt (sharing gifts, impairments and relatable stories for each feeling—which the story that came up with hurt is something that recently happened between Amy and Kat!)

Feelings can either guide us toward healing or lead us into cycles of suppression and disconnection. Feelings aren't good or bad, they simply are, and acknowledging them can be the first step toward reclaiming our energy, health, and wholeness.

How Crying Over a Bagel Can Show Us What We Need (If We Pay Attention) Mar 27, 2025
    Show notes

Have you ever found yourself crying over something like mustard being put on your burger when you asked for ketchup or getting tots instead of fries? How about getting cream cheese on your bagel when you asked for butter? Chances are...you know exactly what we are talking about!! In an effort for y'all to get to know Kat better (since she is joining Amy as a full-time co-host next week) Amy is playing her favorite You Need Therapy (Kat's podcast) episode about the time Kat cried over a bagel.

Why do small inconveniences sometimes take away our ability to utilize rational thinking and drive us to make these mountains out of molehills? What is underneath our inability to regulate our emotions in the moment? Kat talks about how she processed her "dramatic" moment and brings Patrick on to give his take on what he saw going on as it was happening. Learn how to gain information about your needs during experiences when it feels like your disappointment is someone else's fault.
