FOF # 2868 - Mike Ruiz on Directing Starrbooty and Being a Gay Supermodel May 20, 2020
    Show notes

Mike Ruiz is a world renowned celebrity and fashion photographer who's worked with the world’s top brands and entertainers, but we’ll always know him best as the director of one of our favorite cult films, Starrbooty.
A few years before Drag Race became a hit, Rupaul wrote and starred in Starrbooty, a sequel to the low-budget videos she made with her friends in the mid 80s that were sold out of shopping carts at gay bars in Atlanta, Georgia.
This over the top film can’t be found anywhere. It includes RuPaul doing her best Diahann Carol impersonation, gratuitous full frontal nudity and a sex scene between Lady Bunny and Ru.
    MIKE RUIZ: http://www.mikeruiz.com/
Today Mike Ruiz joins us to take a look back at directing RuPaul’s outrageous cult film Starrbooty which gave us the notorious filter for season one of Drag Race and being the April/May cover stud for Out Magazine.
Listen as Mike shares with us stories of being a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race for six seasons, shooting Kathy Griffin and Puppies and Pecs- a pin up calendar to benefit rescue dogs.

FOF # 2867 - Brian Sweeney, Fred Willard and a Million Dollar Pencil May 18, 2020

One of our favorite tv shows from the late 70s was NBC’s Real People, a celebration of everyday people doing extraordinary things like a guy who ate soil, a one-legged man who ran across Canada and a couple who owned a roadside store that offered a million dollar pencil for sale.
And a couple who tried to sell at their roadside store a million dollar pencil.

Coco Peru Has a Strong Backbone May 13, 2020

We recently saw Coco Peru’s sold out performance here in Chicago at Hamburger Mary’s and we can’t stop talking about how wonderful it is, but, unlike one exuberant fan who got tossed out of the audience, we waited until the show was over to express our feelings.
Coco Peru’s new one drag queen show touches on some intense issues- living with regret, isolation, social media and aging. Amazingly, she always finds the humor in some pretty tough topics.

FOF #2865 - A Look at Drag Queens in Movies & the Life of Little Richard May 11, 2020
    Show notes

Since the beginning of Hollywood, crossdressers have had their place in film as either a comedic foil or as a threatening monster.
In mainstream movies like Mrs.Doubtfire and Tootsie, the straight men dress up in drag to win hearts or get a fabulous job but rarely do they show the boys dressing as girls just for the fun of it.
Today, Miss Understood, one of the drag queens from the film Too Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, joins us to look at ways drag queens are portrayed in Hollywood films, what they got right and what they got wrong.

    FOF #2864 - Hooray for Ryan Murphy's Hollywood May 06, 2020
    Show notes

After Hattie McDaniel won an Academy Award in 1940 for her role in Gone with the Wind, it would be another 50 years before another African American woman, Whoopie Golberg in Ghost, would snatch an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
And then it wouldn’t be until 2001 that a black woman, Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball, would win Best Actress.
But what if you could go back in time and rewrite Hollywood’s history to be more black, queer and feminist? In the new Netflix series “Hollywood,” producer Ryan Murphy does just that and proves that “Movies don’t just show us how the world is, they show us how the world can be.

"Fashion experts may have told her What Not to Wear, but in the end Amanda Cohen was years ahead of her time."
One of the biggest changes in the age of the Rona is our fashion. Folks are still trying to express themselves in their video teleconferences and sometimes the results are hilarious.
As Heidi Klum says, “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next you’re out” but right now we aren’t even wearing pants.
Pants? What are pants? Folks wear pajamas all day long, heads are shaved and if they go outside at all, they look like bank robbers.
