35: The Odyssey - Dr. Amy Pistone Nov 27, 2019

Show notes

Gonzaga University Classics Professor, Amy Pistone (@apistone) joins host Emily Edwards (@MsEmilyEdwards) to discuss the history of THE ODYSSEY, the unexpected feminism of Penelope, and all the millions of ways that Odysseus is one epic fuckboi.

Summary of THE ODYSSEY
Odysseus, the great Greek general from Ithaca, is trying to return home to his wife, Penelope, after the Trojan War has kept him away for many years. But he's pissed off the god of the sea, Poseidon, so much so that Poseidon keeps blowing his ship off-course and into the paths of many trials. At each one, Odysseus proves he's a terrible person, and when he returns home, he viciously kills his wife's suitors so he can have her back.

Show notes

Becky of @PrairiePhlox joins host Emily Edwards (@MsEmilyEdwards) to discuss all of the millions of fuckbois from JRR Tolkien's epic– including Tolkien himself.

Summary of LORD OF THE RINGS
Frodo, a hobbit, is left a magical ring by his uncle Bilbo. Turns out the ring is super evil and he needs a rag-tag group of friends to chuck it into an equally evil volcano. It takes like 1000 pages to tell their tale.

33: Call Me By Your Name Nov 13, 2019

Show notes

Val Prozorova (@valprozwriter) joins me from the far reaches of New Zealand to discuss one of the most landmark books in the LGBT canon: André Aciman's CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. We get into that 17 year old horny brainspace, age differences, and yes, we talk about peaches. Sorry.

Summary of CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
Elio Perlman is a 17 year old boy living in Italy with his scholar parents. Each summer, his parents allow a student to live with them to work on their own book and assist his father with scholarly work, and this summer, it's Oliver. Elio immediately falls in love with Oliver, despite their age difference and Oliver's seeming ambivalence to Elio's crush. Eventually, they consummate their relationship before Oliver disappears from Elio's life in Italy.

32: His Dark Materials Nov 06, 2019

Show notes

Lauren and Nicole (who are not very online) join me to discuss a chief Fantasy Fuckboi: Lord Asriel of HIS DARK MATERIALS. If you've watched episode one of the new HBO series, be aware: this is spoiler heavy!

Summary of HIS DARK MATERIALS
Lyra Belacqua is a child without parents in a parallel version of Oxford, England. In this parallel universe, a human's soul takes animal form outside of their body; and Lyra's is Pantalaimon. As Lyra has not hit puberty yet, Pan has not taken a constant form. Her uncle, Lord Asriel, is a scientist at Oxford who is secretly researching a phenomenon called "Dust," much to the anger of the Roman Catholic Church. Lyra learns of dust at the same time she is given a mysterious Golden Compass that she can read like tarot cards when she asks it a question. She is then kidnapped by an evil woman of the church named Mrs. Coulter, who brings her to the North Pole to separate Lyra's soul from her. Using her Golden Compass and friends she made along the way, Lyra escapes, but not before she finds her uncle (who is actually her parent, along with Mrs. Coulter) performing an experiment with the Northern Lights, during which he sacrifices Lyra and opens a rift to a parallel universe (ours), through which Lyra escapes. In subsequent books, Lyra meets a boy from our universe named Will, and together they become the new Adam and Eve and kill God. It's complicated.

The poem is about the celebration of American potential, but in research, I learned one of American poetry's greatest heroes is, possibly, still an albatross around our necks.
