    F***bois of Literature Book Podcast

    • FBOL is now on Patreon! Subscribe: http://www.patreon.com/msemilyedwards • The podcast about the most groan-worthy, enraging, and sh*t characters in lit. Join host Emily Edwards and a guest for a weekly “book club” discussion on every book you wanted to destroy in English class, but couldn’t. Classic literature of Europe and the Americas– everything from mythology to Victorian epics to the modernists– is hard to get through, and each week, we take on a frequently assigned book to talk about all of its highs and lows. These are the Fuckbois of Literature.

30: Ted Hughes - Prof. Emily Van Duyne Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

Sylvia Plath scholar Emily Van Duyne (@EmilyVanDuyne) is here to discuss the complex and interlinked legacies of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath.
CONTENT WARNINGS: suicide (obviously), physical abuse, adultery.
Normally I give a quick bullet points of what we discuss in the episode, but it's here that I have to say: we discuss everything. Legacy, outsider-ism, choice, American vs British politics, sexual politics, and criticism and the nature of art. There are more laughs than you think.

TED HUGHES was an English poet, translator, playwright, and children's author, best known, possibly, as being the husband of Sylvia Plath at the time of her death. Often writing with deep natural symbolism, Hughes's life was inextricably linked with Plath's legacy for the 30+ years he lived on after her. His career was managed by his sister, Olwyn Hughes, and he maintained primary control over Plath's estate, publishing rights, and legacy. Hughes was named Poet Laureate of Britain in 1984 and held the office until his death in 1998.

Hey attic wives and lit witches and welcome to Fuckbois of Literature, I’m Emily Edwards.

Since I found out a lot of y’all are still subscribed on our free platforms, I wanted to give you a little taste of our TWILIGHT episode. In this excerpt, Strats and I discuss the inherent grossness of Vampire stories with an adult and a youth, comparing TWILIGHT to both Buffy and Pride and Prejudice, and how we feel about flawed female teens.

If you end up loving this, I ask you to please consider becoming a Patron over at Patreon.com/fuckboisoflit. Just a dollar a month gets you this whole, hour-long episode, back episodes going to May, and all new episodes going forward.

Becca from the blog BOOK WITH WITH BECCA (@bec_here) is my guest this week to have another discussion, more nuanced on my part, about what I refer to as "the Internet's favorite book," aka, Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. As it turns out, everyone's kinda shitty in this book but it's still very nice. You know?
    SUMMARY
Mr. & Mrs. Bennet have five daughters and an entailed estate. If one does not marry well, the family loses it all. While money is on the prettiest, Jane, to make a good match, feisty Elizabeth manages to pin down Mr. Darcy, who makes $10,000 a year. You know the gist.

If you’re a longtime listener, you know by now that I don’t pick the books we do every episode, the guest does. Mostly that’s so the onus of reading or rereading fresh for the recording session is on me; people normally choose books they love or have recently finished in order to not have to read 400 pages of Victorian Sadness again and again. And I admit, I have rarely said no to a book that someone chose to discuss.

But I almost said no to this one. I hadn’t read it since college, I didn’t get it, I was too uncomfortable. But I should’ve known that my guest wouldn’t lead me astray. You all are in for a phenomenal episode.

Esmé Weijun Wang (https://esmewang.com) is the author of the best-selling book THE COLLECTED SCHIZOPHRENIAS and the novel THE BORDER OF PARADISE. Follow her on Twitter @esmewang

    SUMMARY

Humbert Humbert, a college professor, moves to suburban New Hampshire and rooms with widow, Charlotte Haze, and her daughter, Delores, whom she calls Lolita. Humbert becomes obsessed with the 12 year old daughter, and capitalizes on Charlotte's death to kidnap Lolita and abscond with her for years while he molests her. Humbert goes off the rails when Lolita flees to the arms of a pornographer, Clare Quilty, and then her subsequent husband.
