FANTI — Society & Culture
FANTI

Sometimes the people, places, and things we love don’t love us back. We’re fans, but we also have some ANTI- feelings toward them. Every week on FANTI, journalists Tre’vell Anderson and Jarrett Hill bring their pop culture and political expertise to things we must stan and stand up against. FANTI is a place where nuance reigns supreme with energetic, complicated, and sometimes difficult conversations that bring deep knowledge and thoughtful perspective to the things we love and rage about, from the White House to the Real House(wives).

Show notes

Although we love celebrating anytime a Black individual breaks barriers to become the first in an industry, we have to ask, is there blowback to being the first? This week Tre’vell and Jarrett dissect the significance of being the first Black this, that, and the other before they share their personal “first” experiences that relate to being a Black and Queer individual climbing up the ranks in entertainment journalism.

Pass the Popcorn

*Spoiler Alert Warning*

In this week’s PTP, Jarrett REALLY wants to talk about a show both he and Tre’vell saw: Netflix’s Clickbait. This thriller sees Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) kidnapped only to have his wife, Sophie (Betty Gabriel), and family sent on a wild manhunt to save him. If you haven’t seen the series yet and want to avoid any spoilers, skip ahead to 10:19. And if you’ve seen the show, please @Jarrett, especially if you figured out the ending before watching the final episode. Warning: Jarrett will think you’re lying.

DIS/Honorable Mentions

HM: Actor Michael K. Williams (Lovecraft Country, When They See Us) died on Sept. 6 at age 54.

HM: Janet Jackson stars in a new Lifetime biopic titled, Janet.

HM: Fawzia Mirza directed the queer Muslim rom com The Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night that screened at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

Black History Is Happening Everyday

Black Meme Culture (ft. Brittany Luse, Shar Jossell, Cor.ece & more) Sep 09, 2021

Show notes

The stream will be available to everyone who purchases a ticket. Just visit FANTIPODCAST.com for the link.*

In the meantime, please enjoy this abbreviated version featuring Shar Jossell who joins us to talk about Lil’ Nas X’s pregnancy pics and make predictions about what’s in store for our favorite characters in the final season of Insecure. Plus, the one and only Brittany Luse (co-host of For Colored Nerds podcast with Eric Eddings) weighs in on meme culture, and in particular Black meme culture--the good, the bad and the painful.

The live show featured lots of surprise guests, including producer extraordinaire Jordan Kauwling, a song association game hosted by Cor.ece, the first face-to-face listener feedback segments, an AMA, and dope graphics.

The Highs & Lows of Weed (ft. Chris Ball) Sep 02, 2021

Show notes

**Get tickets to watch the FANTI live stream at the London Podcast Festival on Sunday, Sept. 5th. It’s at 8:30pm in London, 3:30pm ET and 12:30pm PT.**

This week, reefer gets the FANTI treatment, and Jarrett and Tre’Vell are joined by Ball Family Farms CEO Chris Ball. The plant that put food on his table and money in his pocket also put the former pro football player in prison. Of course, that was before weed was legal. Chris explains how he got into cultivating marijuana, and some of the struggles that cannabis growers face, and in particular Black and brown growers. Plus, what is going on over there at Sony? Why did it take so long for Mike Richards to get fired?

No Cis-sies Allowed (ft. Da'Shaun Harrison) Jul 29, 2021
Show notes

This week, Tre’Vell takes advantage of Cis-Jarrett’s absence to have an in-depth conversation with author Da’Shaun Harrison, whom they interviewed for their article What Does It Really Mean to Be Non-Binary? earlier in the year. FANTI listeners already know that Gender Is a Scam, so why is it that trans and non-binary people still buy into the construct? This is one of many issues Tre’Vell and Da’Shaun grapple with this week.
