In this episode of Faithful Politics, Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram sit down with Stephen Strang, the founder and CEO of Charisma Media, to talk about his journey as a Christian media mogul. Stephen’s been named one of Time Magazine's 25 most influential evangelicals and has interviewed several U.S. presidents. The conversation covers how he started Charisma Magazine back in 1975 during the Charismatic movement and turned it into a major player in Christian publishing.

Stephen opens up about the challenges and rewards of leading a faith-based media company, including navigating changes in the industry and staying true to his mission of sharing Christian stories. He shares some personal experiences, like his thoughts on interviewing Donald Trump, why he decided to write books about Trump, and what it’s like being a Christian voice in today’s divided political climate.

The episode also dives into the balance between faith and politics. Stephen talks about how he reconciles supporting Trump, a controversial figure, with his Christian beliefs and how he sees Trump as a leader chosen for this moment in history, flaws and all. He offers a unique perspective on why so many evangelicals back Trump and shares insights on the power of prayer and divine guidance in leadership.
    Guest Bio:

Evangelical Idolatry w/Pastor Jeff Mikels Sep 24, 2024

In this episode of Faithful Politics, Pastor Jeff Mikels discusses his book 'Evangelical Idolatry' and reflects on how political and cultural idols have infiltrated evangelicalism. He shares his personal journey of realizing the division within the church and the challenges he faced when he spoke out against the Trump presidency. Michaels explores the deeper issues within American evangelicalism, including fear as a motivator and the conservative mindset. He emphasizes the need for pastors and congregants to return to a gospel-centered faith and promote unity within the church. In this conversation, Jeff Mikels discusses the blending of faith and politics in evangelicalism and the dangers of idolatry. He explores the idea that conservative evangelicalism often confuses conservative political ideology with divine inspiration, leading to the idolization of certain political figures. He also addresses the notion of America as a Christian nation and the problematic belief that success and wealth are signs of God's blessing. Mikels emphasizes the need for Christians to understand the gospel as both a belief and a way of life, and to translate Christian values to the non-Christian world through proper Christian activism.

Polarization and Hope: Samuel Rodriguez on America's Spiritual Battle Sep 21, 2024

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

In this episode of Faithful Politics, Will Wright and Josh Burtram interview Pastor Samuel Rodriguez, a highly influential Christian leader, pastor, speaker, and civil rights activist. Rodriguez shares his insights on the moral, social, and political challenges facing America today. He emphasizes the increasing polarization in the country, comparing it to the Civil War era, and stresses the need for Christians to turn to the Holy Spirit for guidance and healing.

Rodriguez also talks about his new book, Fresh Oil, Holy Fire, New Wine, which he describes as a biblical response to the current moral and political crises. He argues that despite the chaos, the Holy Spirit remains the most powerful force in America and that hope is not found in political parties, but in the spiritual battle between the forces of good and evil. Throughout the conversation, Rodriguez discusses his personal journey to faith and ministry, his belief in the power of the Holy Spirit, and the importance of humility and integrity.

The episode also touches on various social issues, including racism, political partisanship in the church, and the challenges of navigating biblical truth in a complex world. Rodriguez advocates for unity within the church and stresses the importance of elevating the "Lamb's agenda" over political affiliations, urging Christians to engage in thoughtful, respectful dialogue without demonizing those who disagree.
    Guest Bio:
Charisma magazine named him one of the 40 leaders who changed the world. The Wall St. Journal named him one of the top 12 Latino leaders and he was the only faith leader on that list. He has been named among the “Top 100 Christian Leaders in America” (Newsmax 2018) and nominated as one of the “100 most influential people in the world” (TIME 2013).

Rodriguez has advised Presidents Bush, Obama, and Trump. He is the first Hispanic American to have participated in two different Presidential inauguration ceremonies. In 2009 he read from the gospel of Saint Luke at President Barack Obama’s inaugural prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal church and in 2017 on the Capitol steps before a global viewing audience, Pastor Sam, read and prayed from the gospel of Matthew, concluding with “in the name of Jesus”.

He is the best-selling author of 12 books including “Be Light” “Persevere with Power” and “Your Mess, God’s Miracle”. In addition, he is the executive producer of three films including BREAKTHROUGH and FLAMIN HOT currently streaming on Disney plus. Rodriguez is the recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award presented by the Congress of Racial Equality. As a societal architect and a cultural reformer, Samuel lives to glorify and magnify the name of Jesus.

Expert Witnesses: Professors Corinna Lain and Danielle Wingfield on Presidential Immunity Sep 17, 2024

In this episode of Faithful Politics, Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram are joined by two legal experts, Professor Corinna Lain from the University of Richmond School of Law and Professor Danielle Wingfield, to discuss the Supreme Court's recent ruling on presidential immunity. The conversation explores how the 2024 SCOTUS decision in Trump v. United States builds on earlier cases like Nixon v. Fitzgerald and Clinton v. Jones, granting former presidents greater immunity from prosecution, even for potentially criminal acts performed in office. The professors delve into the broader implications of the ruling, the balance of powers between the executive branch and other government bodies, and the unsettling possibilities for future presidents to push the boundaries of their authority without legal consequence. They also touch on the potential long-term effects on public trust and accountability in American democracy.

Tune in to learn more about this critical case, how it shifts the boundaries of presidential power, and why it's crucial to pay attention as the future of democracy hangs in the balance.

In this conversation, Josh Burtram and Will Wright interview Steve Bezner, the senior pastor of Houston Northwest Church, about his book 'Your Jesus is Too American.' They discuss the problem of American culture co-opting the teachings of Jesus in the American church and the need to prioritize kingdom values over cultural conformity. In this conversation, Steve Bezner discusses the intersection of faith, patriotism, and politics. He emphasizes the importance of building relationships and embodying the teachings of Jesus in order to bring positive change to communities. Bezner addresses the issue of Christian nationalism and cautions against imposing extreme Christian morality on the nation. Evangelicals for Harris? The Changing Face of Faith in Politics with Katherine Stewart Aug 31, 2024
    Show notes

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

We start this conversation with returning guest Katherine Stewart, acclaimed author and journalist, who takes us behind the scenes of the Democratic National Convention, where she moderated a groundbreaking interfaith panel that explored the shifting landscape of faith in American politics. The panel featured prominent Congressman Jared Huffman and Congressman Jamie Raskin, two members of the Congressional Freethought Caucus and Professor Khyati Joshi, a scholar and thought leader on the intersecting issues of race, religion and immigration in the United States.
The conversation then turned towards the growing movement of evangelicals who are breaking away from traditional conservative alignments and finding common ground with the Democratic Party’s focus on the common good and social justice. We then shift to explore the diversity within evangelicalism in America and the influence of the religious right on politics and society.
Recent reporting: Anti-Trump evangelical Christians make the case for Harris
Finally, Katherine gives us a bit of a teaser about her new and upcoming book, "Money, Lies, and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy" coming out early 2025. In the book, Katherine sheds light on the powerful forces driving the Christian nationalist movement, funded by billionaires with an agenda that extends far beyond religious conviction.
In her deeply reported book, Katherine Stewart explores the alarming rise of anti-democratic sentiment in America by immersing readers in the world of conspiracy theorists, extremist churches, and reactionary political movements. She profiles a diverse array of actors—from reactionary Catholic activists to atheist billionaires, and from pseudo-Platonist intellectuals to militia members—who, despite their conflicting agendas, are united in their efforts to undermine democracy. Through her meticulous reporting and analysis, Stewart sheds light on the authoritarian backlash in the U.S., revealing the moral decline of conservatism and offering insights into how democracy can be safeguarded in the future.
Her previous book, "The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism" was turned into a Rob Reiner Documentary 'God & Country.' We were fortunate to have spoken with the director Dan Portland about the film, you can watch the interview here: https://youtu.be/qNLH7pzNNW4?si=nOKdnd88gQRKjrHV
