The science of bad vibes is interesting. Have you ever visited a place that felt unusually peaceful or, conversely, oppressively heavy? Throughout my travels to various haunted locations, I’ve encountered places steeped in history and tragedy, where visitors often sense lingering negativity. Sensitive individuals are especially prone to feeling these residual vibrations, a phenomenon explained by theories of emotional residue and geopathic stress.
Emotional residue suggests that past emotions can leave an imprint on a place, detectable through chemical signals like those emitted through tears and sweat. Research supports the idea that humans can unconsciously communicate emotions through chemosignals, influencing others' feelings and behaviors.
Geopathic stress, on the other hand, is believed to arise from distortions in the Earth’s energy, potentially caused by geological faults, underground water, or man-made structures. This stress is thought to lead to health issues like fatigue, insomnia, and headaches. Historically, ancient societies recognized the impact of Earth's energies on human well-being, guiding the placement of their cities and structures based on natural indicators.
Despite modern science's struggle to fully understand these phenomena, personal experiences reveal the profound impact of a place’s vibrations. I’ve lived in locations that drained my creativity and others that inspired it, highlighting the importance of being attuned to the energy around us.

Old Charleston Jail with Whitney Zahar Nov 03, 2022

The Old Charleston Jail, located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina is a sight to see if you're ever in low country. Nestled between neighborhoods and on the outskirts of the posh historic district, the jail looks horrifyingly out of place. Across the street, an apartment building with children playing on the green has this large fortress for a view. In this area, the horrifying past of Charlestonians from long ago literally collides with residents of today.

The Gribble House Jul 01, 2021

On December 10, 1909, a horrific triple homicide occurred at 401 W. Perry St. in the downtown district of Savannah, Georgia. That day Eliza Gribble and her daughter Carrie were found dead in their home. Another woman by the name of Maggie Hunter was also found in terrible shape but survived for three days. This is the story as we know it.

Cockspur Island Lighthouse Apr 08, 2021

If you drive over the causeway from Savannah, Georgia to Tybee Island, you’ll notice a small lighthouse in the Savannah River. It captured my interest the first time I saw it. Often times, the lighthouse is inaccessible from neighboring Cockspur Island. Residing near Fort Pulaski, the tiny lighthouse has a fascinating history. And maybe even a few ghosts.

Angel of Death Jane Toppan Mar 04, 2021

The most horrible of monsters are those who prey on the weak, the sick. These angels of death strike when they're needed, when their patients cannot care for themselves. When medical professionals decide to harm, they turn their backs on all they’ve been taught. Such is the case of Jane Toppan, one of America’s first serial killers, who claimed to have murdered at least 31 people, perhaps as many as 100 from 1887-1901.

The Poisonous Bride: Marie Lafarge Feb 12, 2021

William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" Feb 10, 2021

William Faulkner chooses an interesting title for his story about a woman confined to her past. The story is filled with many symbolic references, but none as interesting as its title. “A Rose for Emily” allows us to explore what the upcoming events may entail. The title symbolizes Emily’s superiority to the town, her choice of seclusion, and the ultimate fall of her sanity and life.

Though a rose may have its bloom, it still has its thorns.

The Girl with Mysterious Powers Feb 09, 2021

Strange things were happening in Jonesville, LA, in 1938. Alice Belle Kirby was thirteen years old at the time and was described as having light wavy brown hair with grey-blue eyes. She was the seventh child of eight to farmers Leon and Mary Kirby.

According to an article by the Madera Tribune, there were witnesses to Alice's ability to make tables move miraculously without effort and sometimes without touching them at all. She was able to make things float in the air, and she played the piano without touching it.

Household Superstitions: Doors, Stairways, Salt, Candles, and Umbrellas Feb 08, 2021

Our ancestors lived in perilous times, not knowing what would happen from one day to the next. They faced sickness, death, and suffering—the likes of which we can only imagine today. One of the only ways they found to protect themselves was through rituals, the practice of doing things in a particular order. In the same way, certain practices became superstitions—a belief that doing things in a specific fashion would lead to either a positive or ill-fated result.

These superstitions have passed on from generation to generation, sometimes for centuries, through word of mouth and folklore. They have become ingrained in our cultures, in our personal mythologies. We often don't even question where they came from or why exactly we practice them.

Or perhaps you aren't a subscriber of superstitions, having chosen to allow the scientific and rational thinking of the era we live in to override those "old wives tales" that belong to a different time in history.

Either way, their background is fascinating. And you may find yourself saying… Well, just in case.

The Strange Disappearance of David Lang and Ambrose Bierce Oct 30, 2020

Folklore is usually a culmination of truth and fiction. It’s a sort of flavoring for a specific region—a mash of traditions, beliefs, and stories that are passed from one generation to the next. It can be difficult to pick apart because, with every new storyteller, there’s a new spin on the original. Multiply that by a hundred years or more, and what you get may scarcely resemble the seed of truth buried inside.

Lore is obscure, its murky waters are fascinating to gaze upon… but is it safe to jump in? Of Fire and Ice Oct 15, 2020

Shh… can you hear it? The woods are calling.

There’s something mysterious about the woods, wouldn’t you agree? I remember one of my favorite things to do as a child was wander through the woods close to our house, and my best friend and I would treasure hunt in the woods behind her home. As children, we are incurably curious, which makes those wandering parts of our childhoods almost magical. As adults, we struggle to hold onto that kind of magic—the kind that stirs the butterflies and swirls our minds with fantasy. Often times, we seek out cliché adult activities that simply don’t fulfill that curious well, when what we really, really want is to feel that sense of wonder and amazement—we want to go back to a time when monsters lurked in the closet and fairies left gifts in the forest. We want to believe that the connection to the unknown, the supernatural, really does exist.

That’s what motivated me to begin this podcast and to write the books I do. I believe that magic, that undeniable force of curiosity can be held onto as an adult. If only we seek, we will certainly find.

We’re celebrating at Fabled Collective. Last week, we released our first anthology, Women of the Woods. I’ll be sharing my contribution to the book… “Of Fire and Ice” is a story about a beastly woman whose anger makes her infamous.

Last episode, we discussed the life of Virginia Woolf, a feminist writer of the 20th century. In this episode, we’ll delve into A Room of One’s Own, a powerful lecture she delivered to group of young women from the Cambridge colleges of Newnham and Girton in 1928, compiled and published in 1929. In this summary and analysis of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, her groundbreaking (and often heartbreaking) work, we’ll discover what it was like for women who wrote fiction historically and during her lifetime. We’ll discuss Judith, the hypothetical sister of Shakespeare, Jane Austen’s mastery of the sentence, and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. In the end, we’ll talk about the primary things Virginia Woolf says are most important for any women hoping to create her best works of art.

The Witches of Fife May 21, 2020

Ten Days in a Madhouse May 07, 2020

Nellie Bly, known for her book Ten Days in a Madhouse, was born in 1864 just outside of Pittsburgh. She would become a true suffragette and leader in women's voices. Nellie grew up living a typical life of domestic womanhood like many in those days, but she had a voice that needed to be heard. In 1885, she wrote to the Pittsburg Dispatch, going against an article that said the only purpose for women was to clean house and take care of children and that they had no business working outside the home. In her letter, she evoked a woman's God-given abilities to work and do other jobs well, despite what society thought. Her passionate rebuke landed her a job with the Dispatch for $5 a week. But women weren't respected in journalism. Women were allowed to write about food, gardening, household topics, and fashion. But Nellie wanted to be a real journalist. This is her fascinating story.

The popular quote from C.S. Lewis is often used but rarely explored. Reading fairy tales as adults allow us to shift our perspective, opens up our minds to other possibilities, and connects us with our most authentic self.
Perhaps no other story has been retold more than Cinderella. Her rags to riches fable is appealing for its surface moral, but when we dig deeper, the tale has more to say. And depending on the version, her character ranges from independent and strong-willed to even murderous.

Bazar de la Charité Jan 14, 2020

The most tragic events are often the ones that are the most remembered. Such is the case of the 1897 Paris tragedy. The Bazar de la Charité would be the end of many of France's most wealthiest women. Thirty terrifying minutes would change everything.

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women Dec 18, 2019

"I will do something by-and-by. Don't care what, teach, sew, act, write, anything to help the family, and I'll be rich and famous and happy before I die, see if I won't." – These are the words of young Louisa May Alcott, a determined woman who sought to pull her family from poverty in a time when women rarely did such a thing. Much like her literary counterpart, Jo March, Louisa was a rebel with a fundamental cause—to feed her parents and sisters. The Alcott family struggled most of their lives, and if it weren't for Louisa, they likely would have continued to do so.

Born November 29th, 1832, to transcendentalist parents Abigail May and Amos Bronson Alcott, Louisa worked from an early age to help the family's ongoing financial crisis. She proved to be a force in the literary world with her novel, Little Women , which skyrocketed her fame and cemented her place in classic literature.

Many women and some men have fond memories of the first time they read the book—the cozy feelings they felt when escaping in the loving warmth of the March’s home. I certainly have those memories.

But life for Louisa and her family was much more challenging than the charming novel described.

True Crime: The Unsolved Mystery of The Atlanta Ripper Nov 05, 2019

The South has its beauty with dripping Spanish moss, massive oaks, thick woods, and vibrant green vegetation. Along with the remnants of abandoned mansions and decaying buildings—forgotten and buried in a time long ago—the South has more than a few skeletons in its closet. The Witch Moll Dyer Oct 22, 2019

Southern Gothic Sep 10, 2019

The South is full of superstition, folklore, and spooks. I think it's because of our large number of Scottish descendants, but it could also be because people move slower here. We spend lots of time sitting around the table or on our dusty front porches. We're natural-born storytellers. We believe in community and keeping traditions alive.

Southern Gothic Literature focuses on grotesque themes, often featuring broken, damaged, and delusional characters with possible supernatural elements. It's a vibrant genre that has long captured the attention of audiences.
