Overtime Elite swoops in and pays a couple of prospects more than $1 million; the absurd/sad extortion story at Louisville (College Basketball 05/21) May 21, 2021
    Show notes

Friday's news: a couple of highly rated, five-star prospects in the class of 2023 will commit to playing for Overtime Elite, a fledgling league backed financially by the likes of Kevin Durant, Drake and Jeff Bezos. GP and Norlander open with thoughts on that and explain the difference between the viability of a league like this and why it barely affects college basketball. The second half of the podcast (27:30) focuses on the wild story from earlier in the week: former Louisville assistant Dino Gaudio was charged with extortion after he made threats to his boss, Chris Mack, after Mack did not renew Gaudio's contract. Again: WILD STORY.

We've never seen a Kentucky team like this; Gonzaga will again be No. 1; active coaches next up for Hall of Fame (College Basketball 05/17) May 17, 2021
    Show notes

Kentucky received two significant backcourt commitments in recent days: five-star point guard TyTy Washington and Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler, who led the SEC in assists last season. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open on Kentucky’s newest ranking and why this team looks different from any other ever under John Calipari. And while UK should be good, Gonzaga (12:00) will be great. The Bulldogs received a commitment from a point guard that only reinforces why the Zags will open the season ranked first. To wrap, the guys talk Jay Wright (22:00) making the class for the 2021 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, and Norlander peppers Parrish with 12 active coaching candidates’ cases to eventually get in.

Top-five prospect Pat Baldwin Jr. picks Milwaukee (!) over Duke and Georgetown (College Basketball 05/12) May 12, 2021
    Show notes

Patrick Baldwin Jr., the No. 4-ranked prospect in the class of 2021, committed to play for his father at Milwaukee next season. He picked the Panthers over Duke and Georgetown. GP and Norlander hopped on the horn for a quick 20 to discuss the commitment.

Programming alert! We will begin doing offseason mailbag episodes later this month, so please head to Apple Reviews and leave your questions and comments so the guys can read them on the show.

That's funny: Mark Emmert now asking NCAA to put name, imagine and likeness rules on the books ASAP (College Basketball 05/11) May 11, 2021
    Show notes

Mark Emmert told The New York Times over the weekend that he wants the NCAA to have name, image and likeness rules on the books by July 1. Why July 1? That's when five states will have their own rules go live. It's a sticky situation, and change of tune, for the president of the NCAA. This is a story with a few layers, and we continue to follow and keep you up to speed on it because it's a huge story -- the biggest -- in college athletics this spring and summer. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander also touch on Hartford (20:30), fresh off its first NCAA Tournament in school history, heading to D-III ... unless something can be changed in the next couple of months.

Here is Dennis Dodd's story on NIL that's referenced in the pod:

Should college basketball go to six fouls? And quarters? Plus: Gonzaga-UCLA rematch imminent, and Kentucky loads up (College Basketball 05/06) May 06, 2021
    Show notes

GP’s feeling a little froggy, so beware! The guys are back to discuss three topics: the rules changes that could be coming to college basketball next season, Gonzaga-UCLA (23:40) closing in on playing each other and why other top-20 programs should be trying to do the same right now, and Iowa’s CJ Fredrick committing to Kentucky (42:00), bolstering the Wildcats’ desperate need for 3-point shooting. The end has some fun housekeeping notes as well. Terry Teagle … no longer a legend?

With almost no justification for doing so, the NCAA stupidly but unsurprisingly extends Mark Emmert's contract (College Basketball 04/28) Apr 28, 2021
    Show notes

The NCAA quietly announced late Tuesday night that president Mark Emmert had his contracted extended through 2025. It's baffling, and it's why we open this week's pod on the topic. Then Norlander and Parrish get to Loyola Chicago (22:00) hiring the youngest coach in D-I basketball -- while somehow keeping the roster almost entirely in tact. Pretty impressive. The pod closes with some thoughts on Texas (35:45) and then a Trivia Time! for you, the listener!

Here is the Trivia Time! Name the 17 coaches in the past 25 seasons to get their first head-coaching job while simultaneously inheriting a program that made at least the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament the season prior.

    Parrish's column on Emmert: https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/mark-emmert-receiving-contract-extension-as-ncaa-president-should-draw-disappointment-but-not-surprise/

Norlander's column on Drew Valentine: https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/loyola-chicago-hired-29-year-old-drew-valentine-to-take-over-a-top-mid-major-and-then-things-got-even-better/

No. 1 prospect Chet Holmgren is going to Gonzaga, giving Mark Few his best class in school history (College Basketball 04/19) Apr 19, 2021
    Show notes

Gonzaga is reloading. On Monday the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2021, Chet Holmgren, announced he'd be playing next season in Spokane. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander discuss whether or not this will move Gonzaga to No. 1 in the preseason rankings, and give insight into Holmgren's unique game/build and how he'll play alongside Drew Timme ... if Timme does indeed return for his junior season.

🚨Tommy Lloyd is the next coach at Arizona, Wes Miller is the next coach at Cincinnati (Emergency Pod 04/14) Apr 15, 2021
    Show notes

Two big news drops hit Wednesday, prompting an emergency pod, The final two major-conference jobs have filled. We open with Tommy Lloyd leaving Gonzaga to take over Arizona, and all the details from behind the scenes in the past week that led to this moment. Then, at the 22-minute mark, Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander share their thoughts on Wes Miller leaving UNC Greensboro after 10 seasons to be the next coach at Cincinnati. The podcast's final few minutes touch on the power-conference hiring from the past month-or-so that GP and Norlander each think will go down as the best one years from now.

Villanova jumps to No. 3 in way-too-early offseason Top 25 rankings thank to two big decisions (College Basketball 04/13) Apr 13, 2021
    Show notes

Villanova announced a double dose of good news Monday night: Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels will use their bonus free season of eligibility to return. That makes VU a national title contender; it also opens the pod. The guys also discuss Parrish putting Auburn into his way-too-early offseason Top 25 + 1 due to UNC transfer Walker Kessler committing to Bruce Pearl. And at the end of this Tuesday episode: shoutouts to those who finished atop our Bracket Games NCAA Tournament podcast. Our thanks to the Supreme Court!

Coaching carousel: Who will replace Sean Miller at Arizona; reaction to UNC hiring Hubert Davis, Oklahoma tapping Porter Moser (College Basketball 04/09) Apr 09, 2021
    Show notes

Arizona fired Sean Miller Wednesday. Weird timing. Norlander explains more as to why it happened the way it did. And Parrish's column on this can be read in the description below. The guys open on the Arizona opening, including the candidate list, before moving on to talk North Carolina (23:30) hiring Hubert Davis to replace Roy Williams. The pod closes around the 32-minute mark with some thoughts on Texas Tech promoting Mark Adams to replace Chris Beard and Oklahoma hiring Porter Moser.
