    Experience 50 Podcast for Midlife

Men and women in midlife are drawn to Mary Rogers’ honest take on the experiences of the empty nest, aging parents, spending an inheritance, dating and sex, travel, downsizing things, trashing bad habits and figuring out who you want to be now that you really are all almost grow up.

The podcast is always smart, usually funny, and occasionally painfully real in speaking to the cusp of GenX and Baby Boomers.

    Show notes

Combustible recipe: Mix one part exhausted middle-aged woman with one part distracted Millennial store cashier. Stand back.

What brings out the wrath of a midlife woman? Hormones, lack of sleep, a new voice that comes with the confidence of wisdom and experience; all are possible answers to the question of why.

The next question is why do an equal number of women slide into midlife with a sense of grace, poise and assuredness that draws people to her? She speaks her mind with clarity and kindness, people listen and she get results.

This second woman has crossed the bridge of midlife to a land where she finds joy and happiness in most things. She has made her choices, deciding which optional thoughts to entertain and which battles to engage in.

Has she become invisible to the larger population that adores youthfulness? Does she notice or even care?

Diann Wingert, LCSW & Life Transitions Coach, and host Mary Rogers discuss an Experience 50 podcast listener's question: Why do I get so pissed off all the time?

She moved 250 miles away from home, to a town where she didn’t have any real connections other than a job. She made a new home in a very small apartment, experienced being alone for the first time as an adult and learned to turn loneliness into quiet solitude and self-awareness.

The process took one full year. She harnessed her lessons, came home and started a new life including a foreign journey, a new business, and the knowledge that happiness comes from inside.

E016 Life Is Too Short To Be Unhappy with Dr. Craig Brakeman Oct 19, 2015
    Show notes

When Dr. Craig Brakeman, DVM sold his animal hospital back to the corporate franchise, he thought he was making a move to better his life. At 57, he wanted to be able to focus more on the animals and less on managing a large veterinary practice. But when corporate changes began to change the level of care and customer service, he found that he was miserable. His original plan, which was to remain at the practice as an employee until retirement in 10 years, became unimaginable.

The low point was when he found himself driving to work hoping that he would hit a deer and have an excuse for not going to work. By the time he reached the parking lot, he was on the phone with his wife, Allyson to talk about quitting his job that very day.

And that is what he did, with no plan for what would come next.

In our 50s, we still have time to make career changes. It may be to a different employer, a different line of work or working for yourself. One thing is for sure: Life is too short to be unhappy.

Hear advice from Mary and Craig who have both been in this situation, personally and professionally, when you know you must act to change your life… immediately.
