Rev. Derek Terry's Journey From AME to UCC + Super Bowl Reactions Feb 17, 2022

Show notes

Reverend Derek Terry is an artist, scholar and Pastor at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Cincinnati. He talks about his journey from growing up in the African Methodist Episcopal Church to becoming an openly gay Pastor in the United Church of Christ denomination.

Then we all discuss the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the outrage that followed from conservatives, and why the NFL still needs to fix the racism within their system.

Then we each share one thing we weren't allowed to enjoy growing up that we love now.

If you would like to help Derek repair his church's boiler, here is the GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/st-peters-building-birthday-boiler-fund

Ted Cruz Hypocrisy & LGBTQ Christians - Side A, Side B & Side X Jan 13, 2022

Show notes

In this episode, we discuss Ted Cruz headlines of the week. He had a moment of courage talking about January 6th but completely walked it back on Tucker Carlson's show.

He was also in the news recently because of things his daughter said on TikTok. This leads us into a discussion on Christian parents and how they respond to their kids coming out as LGBTQ. We go into the different viewpoints on LGBTQ issues within evangelicalism: Side A, Side B and Side X.

We also talk about the phrase "love the sinner, hate the sin" and how it's actually harmful and problematic.

We're planning on coming to a city near you. Help us decide where by answering the poll in our FB group or sending us a DM or comment of a city you could attend :)

January 6th Anniversary & Moderate Evangelicals Jan 06, 2022

Show notes

It's been one year since the insurrection attempt at The Capitol. We talk about where we were on Jan. 6th 2021 and play our individual TikTok videos we made on that day. We also discuss the aftermath in the evangelical church and how Jan. 6th was the catalyst for many of us to officially become EXvangelicals.

But what about moderate evangelical pastors who have remained silent despite Qanon and other conspiracies flooding their churches? We dive into why remaining silent is problematic.

The Holidays & Dealing With Ultra Conservative Family Dec 23, 2021

Show notes

Christian Nationalism seems to be getting worse. This week, it gave a stage to Kyle Rittenhouse who was met with elaborate praise and gave a scandal-ridden ex-president (Trump) a Sunday morning pulpit.

It is obviously problematic for many of us, but what do we do with family members who support and celebrate these things?

To help us discuss, we are joined by Promise Enlow whose family is deeply involved with Qanon and considered leaders among several prophets who believe Trump is God's chosen. She is also a former worship leader at Bethel turned exvangelical atheist.

For fun, we end the show discussing our favorite Christmas movies.

We'll be back in January 2022. Happy Holidays everyone.

Dangerous Christians & The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill Response Dec 16, 2021

Show notes

There is a real threat to democracy and it's not what we were raised to be weary of: it's christian extremists. In this episode, we discuss the danger of crazy evangelical politics along with January 6 texts, Church Gun Give-aways and more. Then we give a reaction to the the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast.

Deconstruction Isn't Sexy- Featuring J. Crum Dec 09, 2021

Show notes

In this episode, April and Jeremy are joined by award-winning rapper and producer J. Crum. We listen to some of his new single "Clarity" and talk about what inspired the song and his deconstruction.

His story from growing up in a Oneness Pentecostal Church to spending a few years in Master's Commission to where he is now is a fascinating and sometimes enraging journey.

Then they discuss Pastor Matt Chandler and how he called deconstruction just a "sexy thing to do." The story J. Crum tells in this episode shows that deconstruction is anything but sexy.

Cringey Evangelical Clips, Fox News Cancels Jeremy? Dec 02, 2021

Show notes

We're back with Season 5 after our longest break yet. To make up for lost time, we react to some of the cringiest evangelical videos that we missed.

Also, Jeremy recently landed on Fox News and has the threats and hate mail to prove it. We also talk about cancel culture and all the things christians have tried to cancel over the years (despite claiming to hate cancel culture). We missed you all and are glad to be back,

Evangelical turned Episcopalian & Mark Driscoll TikToks w/ Pastor Joseph Yoo Oct 28, 2021

Show notes

April, Paul & Jeremy are joined by Pastor Joseph Yoo of Mosaic Pearland (@joseph.yoo, https://www.mosaicpearland.org/) who tells us about his journey from evangelicalism to the Episcopal church.

They then talk about Mark Driscoll and his rants against "Critical Theory" on TikTok. The show ends with 2-Minute-Takes where it turns into pointless arguments about pop culture and sports.
