    Do you say:

"I enjoy to read"… or "I enjoy reading"?

"I decided going"… or "I decided to go"?

If you're not sure and you're guessing… you're not alone.

Gerunds vs. infinitives are one of the most confusing parts of learning English grammar. But today I'll make it clear when to use which one - so you can be correct and confident.

A gerund is a verb with an -ing ending, which functions as a noun in the sentence πŸ‘‰ "reading," "going," "eating"

An infinitive = to + verb πŸ‘‰ "to read," "to go," "to eat"

The problem is that when we have two verbs in a row… πŸ‘‰ Sometimes the second verb ends in -ing πŸ‘‰ Sometimes the second one is to + verb πŸ‘‰ Sometimes BOTH are possible!

Let's look at each case step by step.

You'll definitely want to download today's lesson guide to review all the examples - it also includes a quiz so you can test yourself and see if you've mastered gerunds and infinitives: https://espresso-english.kit.com/download-to-ing-25-verbs

And I have to warn you – the last one is REALLY hard. I'm not even sure I can say it perfectly!

Before we get started, I'd like to invite you into my FREE 5-day pronunciation power-up mini-course, where we'll practice pronouncing 250+ words - from common words to the ones that are trickiest for English learners to say!

    πŸ’¬ Everyday Speaking Courses

Not all English is the same - we have formal English vs. informal English. The way you speak to a close friend is probably very different from the way you talk to your manager or communicate with a client!

Informal English is friendly, relaxed, and conversational. Native speakers use it with friends, family, classmates, and coworkers they know well. It's common in text messages, casual emails, and everyday conversations.

Formal English is more polite, professional, and carefully worded. You'll often see it in business emails, job applications, academic writing, customer service, presentations, and communication with people you don't know well.

Today I'll show you 10 phrases and how they're different when we're speaking formal vs. informal English.

And I've got a super bonus for you - a guide to 50 phrases in formal English and informal English. It's really helpful in seeing how we say it differently in each situation.
