    66. +R Riding — Part 2: How It Works (Ft. Caine Meyer) Oct 13, 2020
    Show notes

    Hi All🌞🌎

In this episode, Caine Meyer, of Meyer Horsemanship, & I discuss riding with +R & Clicker Training! This is the 2nd episode in the series of riding with positive reinforcement. There is so much content to cover on this topic that there's no way we could fully address every variable — but that definitely didn't stop us from trying! To give you a feel for the episode we address... Of course, how on earth do you get anywhere without stopping all the time, and... How riding + feeding work together, what we use for undersaddle rewards, first steps, mounting, goals & achieving them, moving, getting more speed + high energy movements, bending/turning, proper carriage, & much more!

Hopefully, this episode will give you guys a lot to think about — it certainly did for me! The third part drops next Tuesday (October 20, 2020) covering starting/restarting riding with +R, so be sure to give this one a listen first! The fourth & final part will be answering the questions that these episodes have produced in you! So, be sure to take part in asking(:

    64. The Mares & Foals Escaped + Q&A: Trailering Anxiety, Mental Health & Stallion Manners Sep 29, 2020
    Show notes

    Hi All 🌞🌎

In this episode, I tell the story of the other night's events wherein I had to round up all the loose mares & foals! It was a wild ride for sure lol, but the episode doesn't end there! I discuss possible solutions to two patron questions:

    1. "Since I know my emotional state affects Falcon so much, in the situations where he’s not getting on the trailer, is it better to…Keep re-approaching and risk me getting upset (I know I shouldn’t, but my brain doesn’t know how to not demand perfection yet) which will make Falcon upset?"
    2. "I’ve reached out to friends that have stallions & they all told me I need to be dominant, the leader, & not let him get away with anything. My plan is to barrel race him eventually, so he needs to be close to mares & not act on his urges. He will be gelded but that’s not financially possible, right now. I just don’t know how to keep him in check throughout his career without “putting him in his place” as people have told me I mean obviously if I’m in a situation that could become dangerous, I’ll do what I have to do but I’m just not sure how to train it."

So, tune in for all sorts of directions we go in this episode! Be sure to leave a review for this podcast! If you have a specific question you want to be answered on-air, become a patron & ask away!

    62. Stalling vs. Turnout (Ft. Shelby Dennis) Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

    Hi All🌞🌎

In this episode, I have a conversation with Shelby Dennis to discuss all things Stalls vs. Turnout. Is one better than the other? What are the costs & benefits of each? When do you do which? Which is ethical & which is practical? All covered & answered to the best of our ability in this episode! Do try to keep in mind that all of our opinions & horse-related philosophies are ever-evolving. If you stall your horse, this episode is not to shame you or make you feel guilty. But to instead, provide you with some research, opinions, and an open conversation around another way to do things. Then, when you see both sides, you can make an informed decision about what you'd like to do with your horse. If your circumstances are not ideal, that's ok, too. But I do think we should all be moving toward what's best for the horses and not necessarily what's the most convenient for us. It's all a process as we all never stop being students of the horse(:

    61. Q&A: Aggression/Biting, Herd/Food/Lesson Anxiety, Riding Struggles + More Sep 08, 2020
    Show notes

    Hi All🌞🌎

In this episode, I answer your questions! The questions/concepts include…

How to help a head shy horse who struggles with aggression; working with a horse who is concerned about her herd + fine-tuning training backing up to get the treat; should we teach riders & trainers about intelligent disobedience (ID) + can/should you reinforce a horse for I.D.?; how to help a horse who gets anxious only in lessons; solving a yearling’s aggression toward people who try to pet her; what your options are when you have a lazy lesson horse; why could a horse be biting his blanket + could thrush cause aggression? & finally, is it normal to feel off about riding when you switch to +R training?

All covered & answered to the best of my ability in this episode! It’s a long one so tune in during your commute, errand running, stall mucking, or listen on 2x speed!

    Show notes

    Hi All!

This week's episode is done in a conversational style. I just wanted to level with you guys this week since I've been under a lot of stress lately including some heavy things that I didn't have time to cover fully in this episode, but maybe I will soon. However, it seems the universe is finally on my side — dropping some incredible ideas & opportunities into my lap! One of those things is the spectacular Come Along for the Ride Podcast. I have loved this podcast for over a year now, but the recent episodes are pure gold. You'll have to listen to this episode to find out how these episodes changed Zoë & the way I perceive our interactions. It's worth it, I hope. But the episodes from Come Along for the Ride that I mention in my episode are...

    • Warwick Schiller — https://edenriverequestrian.com/warwick-schiller-performance-horsemanship/
    • Chris Irwin — https://edenriverequestrian.com/chris-irwin-horse-trainer/
    • Bex Tasker — https://edenriverequestrian.com/bex-tasker-positively-together/
    • Monty Gwynne — https://edenriverequestrian.com/monty-gwynne-equispeak/

Highly recommend giving these bad boys a listen. You won't regret it, I promise you that!

Anywho, leave a review for this podcast! Shoot me an email if you have a topic you’d like me to discuss / a person you'd like interviewed! If you have a specific question, become a patron!
