$65 Million Railroad Project Approved by Riverside County Board of Supervisors Jul 20, 2021

On July 20th, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved a Railroad Grade Separation Project. The project will separate the railroad grade from the road at the intersection of Jurupa Road and Van Buren Boulevard in Jurupa Valley.

Teen Hikers Missing on Mt Baldy Air Lifted to Safety Jul 20, 2021

Two teenage hikers who went missing on Mount Baldy were found safe Tuesday. They were part of a group of 51 students from Downey High School’s soccer and lacrosse teams that were led on a hike by two coaches and a teacher. Monday evening, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s responded to a call that some of the hikers were unable to make it out safely. A helicopter crew brought 10 students and three adults down from the mountain. At that time, two hikers, a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, were missing. Search and rescue crews along with volunteers worked through the night. Around Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. the teens were found and airlifted to safety. Authorities report they both appeared to be ok.

Stories highlighted today include: Funeral arrangements are set for former Congressman Jerry Lewis, one of the Inland Empire’s longest serving politicians. The region’s 7.9% jobless rate for June turned upward for the first time this year. At least 10 counties are urging people to wear masks indoors, to slow the spread of the delta variant to unvaccinated people. During the pandemic, many health issues besides COVID-19 were likely going undetected, including STI cases.

Celebration of Life Announced for Former Congressman Jerry Lewis Jul 19, 2021

A celebration of life for former Congressman Jerry Lewis, one of the Inland Empire’s longest serving politicians, will be on Thursday, August 5 at 10:00 a.m. at the University of Redlands Chapel. Lewis died at his Redlands home on July 15. He was 86. Lewis’ political career started with a post as a local school board member. He then moved to the California State Assembly, followed by representing San Bernardino County in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 2013. Among his achievements were leading an effort to establish the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and improving health care treatments at the Loma Linda University Medical Center. Endangered Mountain Frogs Get a Second Chance in San Bernardino National Forest Jul 16, 2021

Hundreds of endangered frogs were re-introduced into the San Bernardino National Forest on July 8. KVCR’s Megan Jamerson has more on the project to save Southern California’s population of Mountain Yellow-Legged frogs. In video footage released by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, a team of scientists can be seen squatting near a pool of water in the San Jacinto mountains. They are holding those plastic containers with purple lids that you store leftovers in. With the tops off, dozens of tiny yellow speckled frogs leap to freedom. This was the first of two releases planned for July that in total will reintroduce around 400 frogs to their native habitat. For more than 20 years, scientists from the San Diego Zoo, UCLA, the U.S. Forest Service, and state and federal wildlife agencies have been working together to save the Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog. Only 100 adults are estimated to be left in the wild. The frogs have struggled to survive in Southern California where they have been hit
