Why Emergency Managers Need to Embrace Project Management Mar 18, 2021
    Show notes

Why Emergency Managers Need to Embrace Project Management. The improvement of incident management activities requires a coordinated effort by all involved agencies with a range of expertise. It behooves all professional disciplines to bring their respective expertise to improve the relevant capabilities. Project management expertise can be employed in multiple ways. It can be used to plan and manage the coordinated effort for improving the overall incident management. It can also be used to improve the execution of activities within each phase. While all of these applications are important, the most critical area demanding immediate attention is the planning and management of the actual response following the occurrence of an incident. The need is to focus first on the large-scale incidents that have the potential to affect a huge number of people, typically classified as major disasters.

Tsunami Ready with Earthquake Country Alliance Mar 11, 2021
    Show notes

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2009 Samoa tsunami, the 2010 Chile tsunami, the 2011 Tohoku, Japan tsunami: In less than 10 years, these four events focused the world's attention on the infrequent but very real threat of tsunamis. Major tsunamis do not happen often, but when they do, they can have a significant impact on life and property. Even small tsunamis, which are more common, can cause loss of life, injuries and considerable damage.
Mark Benthien and Rick Wilson join the EM Weekly team to discuss why emergency managers from all over the world need to share the message of Tsunami safety.

When disaster strikes, staying connected matters Feb 18, 2021
    Show notes

When disaster strikes, staying connected matters more than ever – whether for first response, medical support, recovery efforts, essential supplies, or helping citizens tell family and friends that they are okay. And when terrestrial lines and cell towers are damaged by storms, floods, and fires, satellite delivers the connectivity governments and communities need. Ultimately, disaster response is impossible to execute without reliable communications. When cell phone towers are damaged and terrestrial circuits are flooded, satellite delivers the connectivity needed to coordinate rescue and response and citizen welfare wherever disaster strikes.
With the pandemic as the backdrop, now more than ever, it is essential that businesses and government agencies plan to ensure continuity of operations – including communications – during and after disasters.

Keeping the power on when the grid is down Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

Keeping the power on during a disaster is critical. Utility and emergency management companies are often criticized for not connecting deeply enough with customers. During or after a disaster, consumers without power are unable to charge their phones and other devices, and blame gets shifted to the companies. Customers feel disconnected from the big name brand organizations, and in the moments they are without power, their panic is exacerbated by unknown factors like when power will be restored. That same panic and frustration flows through customers in the face of disaster recovery, as they remain powerless, literally and figuratively. Without a personal connection to customers, those best efforts will still fall short. What can be done to connect more effectively? Target the need behind the outcry: offer mobile recharging solutions.

What will Emergency Management Look Like Under Biden Jan 28, 2021
    Show notes

We have a lot of changes happening in the world today. The United States has a new President and a new direction. President Biden has stated that COVID-19 will be handled by FEMA and a few additional federal agencies. Kelly McKinney the Author of Moment of Truth and long-time emergency manager joins us to discuss what the future may hold for emergency management, FEMA, and more.
President Joe Biden has started his first week in office leaning on the Federal Emergency Management Agency giving them a major role in his administration. Biden has nominated New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell an emergency management leader who has been widely praised for her experience with hurricanes, wildfires, and pandemics. If confirmed this marks the first time a woman has been selected to lead FEMA since its creation in 1979. Criswell has spoken openly about the threat of climate change and its role in exacerbating disasters, telling an interviewer last year that “sea rise is definitely a concern” in New York City.

Emergency Management at K-12 Schools Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

Emergency Management at our K-12 schools can be challenging. Each school day, we send about 55 million children to K-12 schools. We entrust the teachers and administrators to keep them safe and provide a healthy learning environment.
Over the years, we have learned lessons about school emergencies that have brought light to issues of having a well-prepared school. This is done by training staff in their role in an emergency or crisis. In addition, it is critical to have emergency operations plans to prepare school officials and first responders to the unique challenges that the K-12 environment brings.
Although schools are not traditional response organizations, when a school-based emergency occurs, school personnel respond immediately. They provide first aid, notify response partners, and provide instructions before first responders arrive. They also work with their community partners, i.e., governmental organizations that have a responsibility in the school emergency operations plan to provide a cohesive, coordinated response. Community partners include first responders (law enforcement officers, fire officials, and emergency medical services personnel) as well as public and mental health entities in public and nonpublic schools. Families and communities expect schools to keep their children and youths safe from threats (human-caused emergencies such as crime and violence) and hazards (natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and accidents). In collaboration with their local government and community partners, schools can take steps to plan for these potential emergencies through the creation of a school Emergency Operations Plan (school EOP).
This week we are talking to Chief Scott Collins. Chief Collins is Acknowledged as an expert in school safety and active shooter training, serving for the past
6-years as Chief of Police for the Aubrey ISD in Texas. He is passionate about being at the forefront of school-based police agencies, Chief Collins has been called upon to assist several school districts in creating and opening their school-based Law Enforcement, as well as assisting several with their School Safety Audits.
Recently graduating from the Leadership Education Program at the National Command and Staff College in St. Charles, Louisiana, Chief Collins received the MAGNUS Leadership Award, which is awarded “…to the officer demonstrating life-long learning, ongoing self-reflection, character development, consistency, and motivation with valence and inspiration.”
