43: Craig & Katy talk about Year One of the Pod Jun 06, 2018
    Show notes

First thing's first - we've been a podcast for ONE YEAR! And during that time, we have had so many fascinating conversations with a bunch of awesome people. One thing that has been only merely touched on is information about me (Craig) - so Katy had the great idea of the two of us sitting down to chat about my exposures to the worlds of education and punk and the podcast. Truly breaking down the edu, the PUNX, and the podcast!

We dig into how I grew up as a first-generation college student who loved school, and developed into punk kid who challenged authority at every turn, adapting DIY ethics, and eventually starting a podcast that connects people with those things in common as well. While there have been many pieces of my life strung together throughout the episodes of this podcast, here's a true chance to learn a bit more about me, the guy behind the podcast!

    Show notes

This month is all about record stores! Jaclyn and Craig are big fans of collecting vinyl records, as has been mentioned many times on the podcast. This week, we welcome our friend and the owner of Limited to One, Kristian Sorge, to the podcast! Kristian opened Limited to One just under a year ago and has already caught on as one of the must-visit record stores in the world, due to its focus on carrying very limited pressings of rare and hard-to-find records. We dig into a lot of our favorite record stores, how we like things organized, and some of the things we don't like in record stores! We also chat a bit about NEW TUNES that we're loving these days.

    42: Conor McLaughlin - The Straight-Edge Professor May 23, 2018
    Show notes

Conor McLaughlin is an adjunct professor in the Leadership Studies Department at San Diego University - where he teaches on the ethics of leadership. His work is heavily influenced by his punk roots and straight edge lifestyle, which we get into on this episode! Conor is a well-dressed academic punk, which also sort of bucks the typical stereotypes of what a punk should/could look like.

We dig into a lot of social and societal issues surrounding punk, privilege, and working in higher education as white men who are working toward dismantling systems of oppression from the inside. It isn't easy work, but we lay some groundwork for HOW it could be done - perhaps a follow up episode will be needed for this one!

    MUSIC NOTES:
    - This week we featured tunes from the I Kill Giants self-titled album, which was originally released five years ago but is now getting a remastered reissue from Near Mint Records on June 15th.
    - We shared the tunes, "Larry Jr." and "Collector" on this episode - and if you liked what you heard, go to wearenearmint.com to snag a vinyl or digital copy of the album.

41: Tattooed Professionals Panel (LIVE from ACPA Convention in Houston, TX) May 16, 2018
    Show notes

In March, Craig hosted a panel for Tattooed Professionals at the ACPA Convention in Houston, Texas. The theme for this year's ACPA Convention was "Be Bold" and on his third attempt submitting this panel idea to other conventions, it was finally accepted! After all, what's more bold than being tattooed!

Big thanks to the panelists, Ryan Bunts, Liv Parks, Katy Hamm, Patrick Romero-Aldaz, and Rasha Cheek for contributing so much to this rich conversation on tattoos, professionalism, and how they allow us to convey different aspects of our identities while connecting with our students!

We are grateful for the ACPA planning committee for allowing us to use the audio from this presentation for the purposes of this podcast. Granted, we couldn't use all of the audio - primarily due to some audience questions not coming through in the mix - but what we are able to share makes for a quality conversation on the changing dynamics of professionalism in higher education.

    MUSIC NOTES:
    - This week we featured tunes from the new Hidden Hospitals album, "Liars," which is released this Friday on Spartan Records.

40X: Chris Gilbert & Title IX after Dear Colleague May 13, 2018
    Show notes

Here's part two of the fabulous conversation between Katy Hamm and Chris Gilbert from Harvard University. This second part is a concentrated conversation on Title IX, sexual assault prevention, consent, and all of the social justice implications and political connections associated with those topics - especially at a highly routinized and traditional campus like Harvard. Chris goes through his experiences working in OSAPR (Office of Sexual Assault Prevention & Response) and how it has impacted his perspectives on society and education.

    MUSIC NOTES:
    - This week we shared tunes from the new Creighola (AKA Amish Rage) album, "UYULALA," which came out on May 1 through its creator, Scott Nicklas.

    - I featured the song, "Fools, Frauds," this week.
    - Scott and I go way back in terms of creating music - back to our college days of DIY recording in garages and living rooms and making lots of noise together, so it feels very special to support the release of his new album this week!
    - Scott even has a feature on one of my earliest songs from 2011 - you can check it out here!

40: Chris Gilbert - The Punk at Harvard May 09, 2018
    Show notes

Chris Gilbert is a Director of Special Projects at Harvard University - the oldest institution in America, and an institution where he has held a number of titles, and holds a vast amount of knowledge. So this week Katy Hamm sat down with Gilbert, amid his interest in making the historically gender-exclusive Final Clubs gender-inclusive, a move that has sparked a great bit of controversy among current students and alums. Gilbert digs into the motivations for this proposed move and how his experiences being in the Harvard community have informed him over nearly a decade.

Gilbert also came up in the punk scenes of Chicago, is a straight-edge vegan, and is quite heavily tattooed - something you'd imagine would be a bigger issue at Harvard, but as you'll hear, there are a lot of misconceptions about Harvard. Gilbert is a fantastic person to hear discuss some of the history of Harvard, how he battles imposter syndrome, and a plethora of other enamoring topics throughout his conversation with Katy Hamm this week! Hope you enjoy!

I learned a lot in this episode - and I definitely do a lot of reflecting in the moment.

I'm most thankful that Nick visited me at UMass Boston to have this conversation because it was great to chat in person - so you get to hear the buzz of my campus, which is awesome. In Between Spins 004 - Getting to the Gig Apr 25, 2018
    Show notes

This month, we talk about the gig - booking gigs, attending gigs, and how one gets to the gig. Jaclyn O'Connell is back with me this month - and we're joined by Lesley University senior, Kaera Wyse, who books gigs, attends gigs, and loves encouraging people to get to the gig. Kaera also has a knack for intentionally booking diverse lineups with the expressed intent to create better representation in the DIY scene. We dig into how to construct bills, what our ideal bills look like, and whether it's okay to show up to a gig late, or to leave early. There's a lot to cover in this one and we really dig into it. Hope you enjoy!

38: Neal Karkhanis (The Great Heights Band) - the Punk Lawyer Apr 18, 2018
    Show notes

Neal Karkhanis is a guitarist and singer in the band, The Great Heights Band, a Baltimore-based indie/pop punk band that releases its new album, "Rad Pop," this Friday! Karkhanis is also a lawyer, and Healthcare lobbyist for his day job as the Director for Government Relations for the Maryland Hospital Association. Karkhanis actually founded the band while in law school, which is equally impressive as it is absurd - but as he explains, there's a system to law school.

Karkhanis and I also dig into how we were both determined to succeed in education because of an educator telling us that we wouldn't succeed - so in true punk form, we learned out of spite and persevered. You also get to learn A LOT about the politics around healthcare access and the challenges and opportunities Karkhanis has had along the way.

    MUSIC NOTES:
    - This week, we shared tunes from the new album, "Rad Pop," from the Great Heights Band, which is being released through CI Records this Friday!
    - You can visit TheGreatHeightsBand.com to snag a vinyl copy, CD, or digital download! There are some really sweet vinyl variants for the record - so don't miss out!

37: Shawna Potter (War on Women) & Being a Better Ally Apr 11, 2018
    Show notes

Shawna Potter is the lead singer of the Baltimore-based feminist punk band, War on Women. Shawna is an activist for human rights, social justice, and gender equity - and is the founder of the Baltimore chapter of Hollaback, which is an initiative to combat street harassment. Shawna has also been facilitating workshops on sexual assault prevention - which she hopes to bring to college campuses, along with the bands' performances.

We spoke with Shawna about the creation of the new War on Women album, the state of politics, and whether the #MeToo movement is actually going to make a difference in the conversation and prevention of sexual assault moving forward. This conversation is also important because we address how to call-in folks when there are disagreements and learning opportunities as allies and how we can all stand to be a little more patient with each other.

    MUSIC NOTES:
    - This week, we played tunes from the new War on Women album, "Capture the Flag," which is out this Friday on Bridge 9 records!
    - We played the songs, "YDTMHTL," which features vocals from Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and Julie Ruin, as well as the song, "Lone Wolves."
