EAG London 2019: The likelihood and severity of a US-Russia nuclear exchange (Luisa Rodriguez) Jan 11, 2020
    Show notes

Climate scientists have predicted that a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia would lead to a nuclear winter that could cause most people on Earth to starve to death. In her talk, Luisa Rodriguez, a research analyst at Rethink Priorities, describes her model of the severity of the nuclear winter we would actually expect to result from a U.S.-Russia nuclear exchange. She also explores how we should think about the likelihood that such an exchange would lead to human extinction.

Ross Gruetzemacher, a PhD candidate at Auburn University and a data scientist, unpacks the notion of TAI, proposing a distinction between TAI and radically transformative AI (RTAI). He also discusses the relationship between TAI and RTAI, and whether we should expect a period of TAI to precede RTAI. This analysis could help guide EA discussions about how to allocate resources toward mitigating the most extreme impacts of AI.
