On this episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we dive into Jon Scheyer's latest five-star recruit, Dereck Lively II, who committed to Duke on Monday night. What does Lively mean as a player? He is enormous and gifted at both ends of the floor. Jason would like to highlight how long Lively is, in addition to how tall he is. Lively has shown the ability to both score and defend all over the floor. Sam and Donald are excited about his payer comparison to Tyson Chandler. Really, how bad could that be? We agree, though, that Dereck Lively is an enormous addition for the Blue Devils. After the break, we wonder how Jon Scheyer has put together such an impressive class so early in his tenure. Most of Duke's recruits in the 2022 class have already comitted to rising Coach Scheyer, with only a few left on the radar. The full Duke Men’s Basketball chedule has been revealed with the release of the ACC schedule last night, and the DBR Podcast is here to discuss it all. Donald and Sam discuss some of the parts of the ACC schedule to look out for, from the short turnarounds to the long road trips and tough stretches. The recruiting success of Jon Scheyer still has everyone buzzing after last week's news that sharpshooter Jaden Schutt will be a Blue Devil. The DBR podcast crew has more on the impact the 3-point bombing Schutt will have on next year's roster. Normally it's the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, but for this week, we're the Duke Football Report Podcast, as the Blue Devils kick off the 2021 season against the Charlotte 49ers in just a few days, and we have questions. DBR's own Jim Sumner is here to answer all of our questions about the team and its upcoming season. Graduate student Gunnar Holmberg is stepping into the starting quarterback role as Coach David Cutcliffe looks to replace key pieces all over the field. We ask Jim how ready Holmberg is to take over the position, particularly given the difficulty the team had last year with graduate transfer Chase Brice under center. The high point of Duke's offensive attack is on the ground, where returning running back Mataeo Durant is returning after one of the best seasons in Duke history. The rest of the offensive skill players are less experienced and accomplished, but we hope that Holmberg and the rest of the group can develop quickly. On the defensive side of the ball, Duke is looking at a lot of new players in key roles, as they've lost a few talented players to the NFL draft. Who can replace the production of Chris Rumph II, Michael Carter II, and Victor Dimukeje? Finally, we look at the coaching staff, including Coach Cutcliffe's future at Duke, and the status of the various coordinators. Duke didn't make many changes on the staff this offseason, but that doesn't mean the team can't make big changes on the field to right the ship after a 2-9 season in 2020. We have another great guest on Episode 335 of the DBR Podcast. This week, former Duke Basketball and Soccer player and 2001 national champion Andy Borman stops by to chat with Donald and Jason. The meat of the conversation focuses on Kyle Filipowski, a recent Duke commit that Andy Borman coached on the AAU circuit. Andy discusses Filipowski’s strengths with Jason and how the recruiting process played out with future coach Jon Scheyer. Andy will have you ready to have this kid on campus! He also discusses how Covid disrupted their AAU season in 2020 and how that affected Filipowski’s development. We end with his thoughts on Coach K’s retirement (Andy Borman is Coach K’s nephew) and how he’s enjoyed reliving his time with the 2001 national championship team through Return to Glory, which returns in September. We end with Andy’s time on the soccer team under legendary coach John Rennie and some of the old school tactics he would use after a tough loss. After the Andy Borman interview, we quickly react to it and then mention the upcoming official visits of two other Duke recruits, Jaden Schutt and Mark Mitchell. Coach Mike Krzyzewski met virtually with the press before the start of his annual K Academy, and the DBR Podcast was there to capture it all! Coach K jumped on to discuss his summer and some of the ups and downs of his final summer as Duke’s head coach. We discuss some of his best and most intriguing answers from the media, from how he’s been able to bond with his team to personal loss his family experienced over the summer. More importantly, you can tell that K is ready to take on his final season and has been investing most of his time into this team. We also had a few others on the press conference. Joey Baker, Wendell Moore, Jeremy Roach, and Amile Jefferson all took questions from the media, and we have some of the best soundbites they produced as well.
