This was a big win... a win Duke needed. The Blue Devils victory over Baylor was a crucial non-conference game for a team that didn't perform as expected over the first month of the season. But Duke has been a whole different animal lately and Baylor bore the brunt of it. The Duke Blue Devils took care of business against the Hofstra Pride, and we have an immediate postgame recap on Episode 568! Duke had to battle Hofstra for a half, but then started to pull away in the 2nd half with a dazzling display. Jason and Donald jump on about a half hour after the conclusion of the game to go quickly through all the good from this victory. Kyle Filipowski was incredible with his near triple double, and so many other players get some kudos for their play. After the break, we discuss some of the things that need improvement from the Blue Devils as they moved to 7-3 on the season. One of the better mid-major teams in the country comes to Cameron Tuesday night as the Hofstra Pride arrive in Durham. Make no mistake this is a club capable of giving Duke a real game. We are sure Jon Scheyer and his staff are treating this opponent with respect and the DBR Podcast crew is too, with a breakdown of all the things to watch out for in this contest. Hofstra is a super-experienced team that is full of outstanding shooters. Whether you think it was the Jared McCain show or you were wowed at the performance of Jaylen Blakes, there was no question that Duke's backcourt brought their A-game against the Charlotte 49ers. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down all the positive signs we saw from the Blue Devils in their win against a pretty good Charlotte club. With Tyrese Proctor still nursing a sprained ankle, Duke needed other guys to step up. The Duke Blue Devils have hired a head football coach (cue the blue smoke!) and Jason and Donald discuss the hire on a special DBR Bites Episode 29. Manny Diaz comes to Duke from Penn State, where he was the defensive coordinator for 2 years. Before that, he was the head coach at Miami. He also had coaching stints at Florida State, NC State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas, and Louisiana Tech. We discuss what Manny Diaz brings to the table, starting with some incredible defenses. Penn State fans are very upset at losing Diaz to Duke, and it seems like players are excited to have him coming to campus. After the break, Donald breaks down some of the concerns for Manny Diaz that he followed closely in his stint as the Miami defensive coordinator and head coach. While he introduced the Turnover Chain, there were some lessons that were hopefully learned from his first head coaching stint. Duke has a big game this weekend, not because of the opponent (though this is a team to be respected) but because we begin to get to see what Duke looks like during the "Proctor is injured" part of the season. It appears Tyrese Proctor may be out for an extended period of time and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here to talk about the changes Duke may make to fill in for the star PG. You may be surprised at the names who they see getting extra playing time. The Duke Blue Devils had another poor showing yesterday against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and we discuss the first ACC loss on Episode 565. Duke lost 72-68 to Georgia Tech in a game that saw Duke fans lament the loss of Tyrese Proctor to an ankle injury early in the game and saw more poor shooting and stagnant offense. Jason Evans was in the building, so Jason and Donald start the discussion with his vantage point before we get into the headlines. There is some good to point out from this game, namely the play of Jeremy Roach as well as how the team once again fought to get back and have a chance to win. We also have some sound from the locker room as Jason was able to capture some of what Jeremy Roach and Jon Scheyer said after the game, and then we get into what went wrong with Duke Men’s Basketball in this game and how home bad patterns have formed on offense and defense. We discuss the Mark Mitchell technical foul that was a pivotal moment in the game, and we take a 30,000 foot view to hopefully ease some concerns that this season is already a wash.
